morrisel - 2009-12-17 10:39 AM I would love to participate in eating healthy as well! I don't have as much of a problem with the sweets as I do with the "spirits". Looking forward to the next two weeks being over with though...because not only do I have holidays to worry about, my brother is getting married the day after Christmas and I've been stressing myself out about that. Happy that he's doing it, but ready for the excitement to be over!

Wow...you have extra excitement and stress going on!  About one more week and you'll be through.  Hopefully you can take some time for yourself to relax after.

TRIMAN413 - 2009-12-17 8:38 AMWell I have my MRI today.  I wont know anything until next Tuesday though at my next appointment.  It was weird yesterday, it was actually kind of bothering me during my swim.  Cant quite figure that one out unless I was kicking too hard, which I dont think that I kick that hard.
Good thoughts being sent your way -- hopefully they'll figure everything out soon and you'll be right as rain again!

morrisel - 2009-12-17 10:44 AM I hate to ask the stupid question, but is there any way that I can link to this forum thread without having to go into the main mentor page and search through the other forums?

You can also copy and paste to the link section of your blog in your training log.

I need to limit my workday posting to a lunchtime driveby post but I'll catch up in the evening.

Got out this morning for my walk + run and did 5 run intervals. This is the most running I've done since July and I'm very glad to report that I'm not feeling any heel discomfort!

Catch you tonight!

Awesome.  I'll totally get in on some of that -- I still have 10-15 pounds left to lose (I was SO overfat when I started tri training -- I'm down 50 lbs. since last January and I'm still carrying a bit more fat than I'd like.)  Plus I know that if I'm going to get in shape for Olympic-distance tris next August/September while trying to finish my dissertation before next summer, it's going to be such a temptation to eat cr@p from Mickey D's or somesuch.

Oh...I know how bad I ate when I was writing my PhD proposal.  I can't even imagine how bad it's going to be for the dissertation.

Idle curiosity chitchat: what subject are you getting your PhD in?  (I'm in neurobiology.)

morrisel - 2009-12-17 10:36 AM I really hope for your sake that you haven't aggravated a stress fracture! I ended up with one in 2005 after trying to train for a 1/2 marathon in Nashville. For a very long time I wasn't able to run at all, so like I said, I'm crossing my fingers for you!

Those were almost his exact words.  That is why he sent me to have an MRI.  I didnt even know I had one.  He thought he saw one on the x-ray so he wanted an MRI done.  Now your scaring me!!!...lol

Try not to worry too much (I know, hard!).  At this point, you can't do much if you have one except to wait for the diagnosis, follow the recommended treatment, and be patient.

When I had a stress fracture, it took about 8 weeks to heal and I had run on it for quite awhile.  Everyone heals a little bit different.

If I heard the Dr. right, he said that it was an old stress fracture that was healed.  I dont know if he thinks I reinjured it or what.  I will just wait to see what he has to say.  Im really not dwelling on it.  It is what it is.  Just anxious to get back to running.

I totally understand.  It sucks being injured.

Did you ever have a bone scan?

I struggle with that as well.  I try to periodically challenge myself to a longer set...say a half mile or a mile.  Just take it nice and easy.  Get use to the distance before you try to add speed.  My stubborn streak helps with finishing the longer sets.   As I finish up a length I ask myself 'would it really be that hard to do just one more 50'...and then I do it again...and again...

I am considering getting myself a waterproof mp3 player for Christmas.  I am hoping that it will help with the boredom.

I do a similar thing. I swim 2-3 times a week. I try to make one swim into a long, continuous swim at a steady pace, kind of like a long run would be, gradually increasing the yardage every week. Last April I could not swim more than 50 yards without taking a breather, but I'm up to swimming 2000 yards continuously (except for minor stuff like needing to pause and readjust my goggles or swim cap). (I do another swim where the main set is some kind of intervals with rest. If I get a third swim in, I do some drill work.)

It gets kind of boring for me, too, but I counteract that by concentrating really hard on my form when I swim the longer sets; especially since I am swimming less hard than I do for short sets, I can really ask myself all the time "Am I holding the right body position? Are my abs engaged? Am I pulling using my lats, not my triceps? Am I keeping my elbow high and catching the water correctly? Am I rotating enough through my stroke? Am I over-rotating to breathe?" It's been helping a lot with my stroke (drills are also great for this), and more importantly, it passes the time. Mostly because my stroke is by no means perfect and I'm always catching myself committing some cardinal sin or another.

I think that you really need that continuous swim to help build endurance (and also to help you get an idea of what your actual race times are likely to be like -- I can swim 1:30/100 if I'm only going to swim 100's, but it's going to be more like 2:00/100 when I'm swimming 1650 yards.) But if you only swim long continuous swims, you won't get any faster -- you need to mix it up and do some swim workouts focused on building speed in order to actually get fast.

No I have never had one.

That's how my stress fracture was diagnosed.  They inject you with a tracer, you wait an hour, then have the scan.  The tracer gets picked up by active bone cells (like at a fracture site) and it lights up on the screen.  Docs can tell if it is healed or still healing that way.

That's what they did after it was diagnosed and it didn't heal right away.

I'm studying peripheral sensory neurons, specifically the changes in gene transcription that regulate their response to nerve injury. Genetics is cool stuff. Hope your thesis proposal is being more tractable than mine has turned out to be :D

Interesting.  My project is studying the changes in gene expression in the heart as the rats go from compensation to failure.  Somewhat similar.

It's going reasonably well.  I've got a lot of data and I'm writing a manuscript now.  Planning to submit it in January, so hopefully the reviewers like it too.
