jshiplet - 2010-01-06 2:12 PM I know some may diagree with me, but for the casual athlete, i think doing core excercises 3 or 4 days a week for 20 minutes is very beneficial. I know when I swam in college we were doing 45 minutes of core 5 days a week, it was very grueling and it helped a ton, but thats also 45 minutes. Not everyone has 45 minutes to spend, thats why personally i think 20 is a good way to go. Im not saying your going to get abs of steel this way, but it will help in your performance. I normally do mine after a good swim, but i swim 3 or 4 days a week. I always like to get the blood going before i do core so that i remember to take a breath when working it hard. I use medicine balls, cords, etc, not just straight situps, crunches etc.

I am also from the school that Strength and Core training are very important.  I know a lot of triathletes do not do any strength training at all, but they are probably naturals or come from an athletic background.

My plan is to continue lifting 3-4 days per week for 45 min each, incorporating strength and core in each session untill my triathalon training takes over, probably April.  I am only running now so I have the time for this.  Mid season, I drop the core/strength down to 1-2 times per week, I'd prefer to do more but the time constraints make me focus on SBR rather than strength.

i agree that strength conditioning is very important.  core training even moreso.  when i do get to lifting my plan is usually every third day and i do my core exercises (ab/lower back work) before AND after each session.  my lifting is the basic exercises (bench, shoulder press, tricep pushdowns, lat rows/lat pulldowns, bicep curls, leg press and calf raises) 2 sets of 15 - 20 reps.........aprx 1:00 rest inbetween sets.  i have found that this works best for me and i would recommend it for others, but tweak it to fit your specific needs and specs!

Get a fan!  You are going to sweat! Good luck with it...I hate it!  Well, actually, it is nice on the nights when I don't feel like leaving my house to workout.

Awesome advice from JShiplet on core and swimming - where are my gold stars to give out?

My parents have a video screen set up at their treadmill, and I have a friend who plays video games on the elliptical. Maybe bring the trainer into the living room and watch movies?

Well, the weekend started a little earlier than I really wanted to.  The oldest boy had basketball, but I was able to get away afterwards and get in some weights.  I am being a little careful, my calves are really tight, I can even feel it in the back of my knees.  I limited my hamstring curls this morning to just two sets because I could feel tightness in the back of my knees during the workout.

I did skip a day of running to rest my calves, but I ran about 1/4 miles afterwards just to see how they were doing.  Still a little tight, but nothing a little rest won't fix.

I finally found the BT core workout and off-season weight program, has anyone tried them?  The core program looks like a real butt-kicker, should be fun.

Hope everyone gets a workout in and gets off the couch (even if there is a lot of football on this weekend).

The good news is I got another run in. 1st 2 miles felt good but my L calf started to ache a little and I was getting winded too. Still, it was about 30 sec better than my last few runs. The bad news is ice cream was on sale at the grocery store and so my wife bought 4 kinds.

Hey guys,

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I am relaxing watching the "turn-over fest" during both NFL games today, crazy.  I just completed my training plan for next week, throwing in some core training and spitting up my upper and lower body weights.  I plan on throwing in the trainer in a couple of weeks and could sure use some workout advice.  Does anyone have any workouts for the trainer that keep it interesting?  I just don't want to waste away 30-90 minutes on the trainer and not feel like I accomplished much.  Any and all advise is welcome.

X2 on the trainer advice.  I'm planning on some intervals, but outside of that there is not much I can think of.  The good news for me is my wife gave me the go ahead to use the spare bedroom to set up my bike, however I have a feeling I'd prefer the freezing garage than sweating my a$$ off in the guest room.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Here's what's up with me...it is now official, I'm a triathlete in training. I switched gyms this weekend to one that has a swimming pool, so mark that excuse off the list (still need a bike though). I don't plan to really start tri training till after the Austin 26.2 next month. I got my last real run in before the Houston marathon this coming weekend. I think I'm ready to go, except for a weird tinge in my rt. lower calf , not sure what that's about. Anyway, if anyone cares, my bib# is 2866 so go on line and track my race if you're bored Sunday morning...still hoping for <3:40:00.

Hey guys,

Had a great workout this morning with run, upper body weights and core.  That core workout is going to be a killer.  I had to change it during the V-ups with the Fitball, I just could not keep my form and I would rather do it correctly than not.

Brian, if it works, below is the link to a Weight training article on BT and that article has links to core workouts done by D3 Multisports.  Link is as follows:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=631

Wade, I will be checking the Houston Marathon for updates on Sunday.  Good luck and just run your race.

I also found a trainer workout program, sort off.  Check out the link:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=392

Hope everyone has a great day and a great week.

Kudos on the links Eric! Thanks for digging them up.  I especially like the Drainer plans. However, I found the D3 Strength and Core stuff a bit Vanilla. I am working on two week cyclical strength training plan, once I get it to where I like it I will definitly share.

Core, Chest and triceps for me today.  Tempo run tomorrow, Back, Biceps and Core Wednesday, Speed run Thursday, Friday Off, Saturday Shoulders, Core & 1st Drainer session, Sunday Long run....

There, I put it in writing, therefore it must be done!
