Champion 7553 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED So keep the mentor group active! Keep logging, and keep inspiring one another (that's what it takes to keep it active, there is no "official" process). The tri-bike versus road bike is a common dilemma. A road bike is usually a little more versitile, so could work for touring as well as triathlons and would be welcome in group rides (if you remove the aerobars). (Using aerobars in a group is generally considered a NO NO. Some road groups balk at even having them on the bike even if you're not using them (there is a legitimate safety issue with the forward-pointing aerobars, but the bigger prejudice is the alleged lack of bike handling skills for anyone who shows up with aerobars...i.e. rides solo most of the time where an aero position is more desirable than handling characteristics). Some people have only a tri-bike and still tour or do long, leisurely rides. Others race on road bikes. Whatever you choose, see if you can arrange a long-term test ride (2-4 weeks) to really get comfortable. You may find you like the fit of a road bike with aerobars better than a tri-bike. It does take time to get adjusted to the different position, so an initial "uncomfortable" period shouldn't be a surprise. The other consideration is a tri-bike is usually more expensive than an equivalent-spec road bike (which is a bit unusual, since the integrated shifters on road bikes are far more expensive than bar-end shifters found on tri-bikes). From all I've read, an aero helmet provides better benefit than aero bike components (once you're in an appropriate aero position on either type of bike). |

Extreme Veteran 650 Sacramento, California | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED Thanks. BTW, got the new wetsuit last week. Went for a test swim in it... very nice. I learned one thing too, for me anyway. Wear ear plugs when the water's cold. I didn't for my test swim and boy was I dizzy after I got out. |

Extreme Veteran 650 Sacramento, California | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED So, the race is over. It was awesome! The weather cooperated completely... it was sunny & warm almost all day long. It was warm enough that some folks were opting to not wear wetsuits. I wasn't going to take any chances and I thought it was going to be a good opportunity to experience the event with a wetsuit. The swim was a bit rough and maybe I didn't take it as easy as I meant to, but I was still happy with it. Transitions went pretty well. The bike segment left me a bit more tired than I anticipated and my run suffered a bit, but still I was having a ball. I updated my race report with more details, but all in all it was fantastic. I'm really looking forward to the next race. |

Extreme Veteran 650 Sacramento, California | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED Mike, Now that I'm done with my 12 week training plan... I feel a bit unsure what sort of training plan I should follow. Do you have any thoughts on that? What sort of training/planning have you done after a race? I know you're not a coach, but maybe you could share your personal experience? |

I feel a bit unsure what sort of training plan I should follow. Do you have any thoughts on that? What sort of training/planning have you done after a race? I know you're not a coach, but maybe you could share your personal experience? Depends on the race and situation...Last year, I spent 8 weeks post IMCdA lounging around instead of training for Steelhead. In my defense, the doctor started to say "let pain be your guide" but stopped himself and simply said "No biking, no swimming until I clear you." I did run a little in those 8 weeks. Other races, I've had another race on the calendar, so the time post-race was spent training for the next one. It's pretty common to experience some post-race melancholy, especially if you've been focused on a major race for months and months (and following a training plan that ends at the race). You wake up in the morning and there's no planned training...you realize you can sleep in on Saturday morning...you can play golf, frisbee, or walk the neighborhood with your sweetie (or kids). So what do you want to do? You can sign up for another triathlon and find a training plan to get you from today's fitness to race-day fitness. (If the race is in 10 weeks, simply take the last 10 weeks of a longer training plan as long as you can comfortably do the volume for the week where you pick up. ) You can set some generic training goals (bike 200 miles this month, run 65 miles this month, swim 15,000 yards this month) and count each workout towards achieving those goals. If you're not tied to a "training plan" feel free to mix up the biking and hit the trails with your mountain bike. (Or, hook up with some recreational rides where you show up, ride to some destination--a restaurant seems to be popular--and ride back, no pace goals or anything. ) |

Extreme Veteran 650 Sacramento, California | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED I'm actually kind of pumped to do more tri's this year. I think I'm going to keep on training. The Vineman was tough but I've recovered very well. I've got the next Sprint scheduled on Memorial Day. And I'm probably going to do a 10K here in my hometown on May 1st. |

What do you suggest for this weeks work outs? I havn't followed a plan to this point and not having run a marathon before.....anyone any advice? Kevin I'm doing my first marathon too, so all of this "advice" comes with inexperience at this kind of race. I'm ignoring the BT Marathon training plan, so you can look at the run training I have for the week. The general idea of the taper is to do a few short, race-intensity workouts and enjoy the relatively light workout load so you're refreshed and ready to race. I'll probably hold off cycling until next week rather than start that up this week and make those muscles I haven't used sore/tired this week. I've heard it's good to stay off your feet as much as possible the day before (yea...like that'll happen...) Hydrate well and fuel the day before. |

Veteran 240 Angola, IN | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED I have not seen anyone posting here lately, so thought I would try to spur you all on a little. Holly Smokes!!! Road 2 hours in the rain tonight with temps around 48 degrees. Welcome to the midwest. I was supposed to run an hour, but when I took off my wet shoes my feet were so cold that I could not feel them. Decided to try to make up that hour of running later in the week. In heinsight maybe I should have road on the trainer in my living room, then ran in the rain. I am sure that decision will catch up with me later this week, especially since I gotta be out of town all weekend (on the road). I hope everyone is doing well. JK |

Champion 7553 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED Thanks Josh! Training in the midwest can be a challenge. You might invest in some toe-covers, arm warmers, and knee warmers (I've ordered them from either Nashbar or Performance). Relatively inexpensive, but oh-so-nice for ugly weather. While it's nice to have the tread alive, the real value of the mentor group is the day-to-day inspiration/accountability we offer each other. If you can hit each other's blogs daily, (and you know people are checking in on you), it's easier to stay on top of training. (Plus, when you have that almost-daily contact, it's easier to "know" what's happening and how to respond. ) |

Veteran 323 Sandusky, OH | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group-2010 Vintage CLOSED Josh I've been tracking your training... Great job!! You have more spark than I do to ride in the rain. I know i will eventually have to, but I don't like it and I don't want to mess my new bike up (not that rain would). Must be a girl thing. So I had to do an hour and a half on the trainer the other day. Of course it was sunny and warm wed and thursday and I had to work. But this weekend should be nice so I'll crunch alot in. Mike- I def like the support from this site esp the inspires!! Not gonna lie, it makes me feel good that someone cares enough to write ... keep up the great work everyone! Laura |
