So. Guess if I am gonna come down there I had better book a flight.

Does anybody know how long of a drive it is from Myrtle Beach to Wilmington??
Scare Canada has a ton of flights to Myrtle Beach..... so it might be cheaper this way........

It's about 70 miles.  So just over an hour drive.  I'm sure anyone coming from the general Greenville, SC area that had room in their car could even pick you up.

Hello.  Would like to join the group.  The information has been super.  I finished my first HIM this past May at HIM Florida in Orlando; nearly turned into dust on the run from the amazing heat.  Am very pleased to know that B2B will be much more temp kind.

This is my first IM.  Some have told me to go for an M-Dot event to get that "You are an Ironman" at the end, but to me its about making some very special changes in my life and seeing an amazing set of dreams come true.  I've come across some very nice information regarding this event and how well it is managed and supported.

The bike course sounds like it is along very nice roads with some rollers here and there.  Is this true?  Any tips on the bike and run courses?

Thanks everyone.

There is one hill on the bike course. It's the bridge you cross. IIRC the bike course elevation change is something like 10' over 112 miles plus the one bridge. Nice roads and it's the only time you can ride your bike on an interstate, they have one lane closed off for the race.

Bike course: Get used to staying aero. There are literally no hills or changes that require you to get on your hoods. Every 1/2 hour to hour stand up and stretch out everything.

Run course: If it's the same as last year there are a few steepish hills and two bridges you cross that give you another couple hills. The rest is a sidewalk and running path through a park. Nice run course, even for me who can't run worth a damn and really doesn't like running to begin with.

Just to put a picture to what Daniel is saying:

Bike course is here.

Run course (one loop) is here.

Click the 'elevation' box to see the elevations.  They probably do NOT pick up the bridges, but should otherwise be about right.  The hardest 'hill' I see on the bike looks about like a gain of around 50 feet in over a mile.  We will barely even notice it.

Wind, however, is a different story...

OK! I guess there is time but the bike course I found on b2b website differs dramatically between 50 and 70 miles from yours and others I have found on this site. I have plotted the one from their website on this site, just search for B2B and it will be under my name arnenes. Now we have 20 weeks + one day to figure it out.

Cheers to all and I am also embarking on a 20 week plan this week end.

I was just curious because I am doing the 20 wk HIM plan for b2b Half:

Duration calculation results

From and including: Friday, June 25, 2010
To, but not including : Saturday, November 13, 2010

It is 141 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date

Or 4 months, 19 days excluding the end date

Alternative time units

141 days can be converted to one of these units:
  • 12,182,400 seconds
  • 203,040 minutes
  • 3384 hours
  • 20 weeks (rounded down)

I didn't actually plot that one out -- just searched for it.  Maybe they've changed the course.  Or maybe whoever plotted it out was cartographically challenged...

The run course link is from the first year of B2B and was changed last year due to the massive traffic issues that resulted from it.  The run course listed on the B2B site is what we did last year and didn't seem to mess things up all that bad.

On edit, the ride course link is from the first year too.  I'm not sure how it worked but we hit interstate 140 and headed out to the course.  Nice ride once we got on the interstate, which was kinda of interesting.

There were many issues with traffic in the first year of the event.

The first day of my training plan I changed up a bit.  I substitued a 2 hour cycle with a 60 miler 3 hr cycle.  Did not want to go backwards from my current long rides. Plan is to add about 10 miles each week to the long ride. I lifted weights and then did core 1 exercises.  For my HIM I did not do any core training for this I am going to give it a try.  I also purchased a book from Barnes and Noble yesterday called "The Triathlete's Guide to Mental Training by Jim Taylor Ph.D. and Terri Schneider. Good information on how to do some mental exercises and processes to boost performance.  I am open to see if it works.

I decided to take some more advice and see if I can work on the mental part of my trianing as well.

Fat Tony's is my favorite place in Wilmington!

Anyone want to schedule a preview of the bike half or full course in July or August sometime?  I went to the BT cycling thing for White Lake and it helped tremendously!

I know we can't do the full route because its on the I40

Actually this week was going well until I found that my pool was closing early today.  No long swim for me.  Following the BT plan but also on week 10 of Jorges bike training program.  Compared to plan I am on target for swimming, ahead on biking, and don't care about the running since I am doing a relay.

My first of 20 weeks started OK, was worried about getting into the running again but did 3 days in a row with no major issues. Yesterday I tried to cycle to the cottage. Fierce headwind 30 km/hrs made it into a grinding slow torture, then I fell and my pride was really hurting, of course lots of people watching me going of the shoulder into a ditch with feet locked into pedals. Anyways it all got worse when my stomach told me to sit up or I will make your life hell! Had to be picked up only 17 km from the cottage, but at least I managed to do 120 km before trowing in the towel. Next week vacation in Norway, no bike, sea temp around 10C, so I will run Forrest run!

I was at the beach all last week and, ironically (and somewhat depressing) I was not able to get in a single OWS.  Oh well.  I got some good practice riding the flats with wind.

Well I am considering doing the Full on my own instead of on a relay team but I am not sure it will be a short program 18 weeks left. I am still got some base from Half Ironman Florida but still not sure.

X2. Week at the beach and didn't swim once. Wind was blowing gale force all week.
