I'm a Probation/Parole Officer who works with adults with mental health needs.  I work for the government so the hours aren't too bad.  Most of the people I supervise have a substance abuse problem along with a mental diagnosis.

Yeah, I noticed the "major"/"very large" adjetive.  And I'm guilty as charged.  Some of us just don't want to mention our politically incorrect companies.  We'd end up in COJ defending our companies.

TJ

TJ is very right.......and I guess we seem to be very careful. Why? It's The world we live in I guess. So I'll be the first to break. Even though I would like to say I've seen you guys for a while, I love this thread! This life style has changed my life and a lot has to do with this site. So first and foremost I want to say THANKS RON, you have made a difference in my life in developing this site!, I checked out other sites but his is my home. All of you feel like another family. Newbies, OLDIES, veterens, experts....and so on.........UNREAL!!!!!!!!

Since I'm from Arkansas, everybody gets a nickname (specially from a small town) so mine happens to be Little Tom. You'll have to see me at a race to get the story. I work for Boston Scientific. I sell stents that go in your dang body (arteries), because you smoked to much, ate to much Popeyes or KFC, or drank to much (JB, JD) or such. I love the medical field, but would love to win the lottery. It's not like this is a white collar site, but you must admit if not for some of our jobs it would be harder to train and get GADGETS. This IS for everybody and I love reading your stories. Thanks for all the inspirations to you who have sent.

RON, again thank you and those who've helped you. No matter what your going thu or how bad crap get's........you made a difference in my life by letting me come here....

THANK ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! here for the long haul!!

Little Tom

I am a physical therapy aide in an othopaedic practice. I am currently waiting to get into clinicals for my nursing degree.

I have a Bachelor's of Arts in journalism and worked as a newspaper editor for five years before I quit to go back to school.

Right now I work part time -about 25 hours per week - which allows me plenty of time to train and spend with my husband and nearly 3-year-old son.

Most days, I'm a software engineer for American Airlines.

Can you code the system to recognize me and give me an automatic upgrade?  I hate sitting in coach with the drooler by the window and armrest hog on the aisle.

Wow - so many different stories here. I am a shipbroker... the guy that wades into the deep sea transportation market on a daily basis and matches up petroleum movers (oil companies and traders) with shipping companies (ship - tug - barge).

It's a lot of 50 hr weeks, some travel but no cool perks like a discount on gasoline. Pretty much  8-10 hr days - some quiet - some so hectic I literally can't stand any noise in my car on the way home.

I understand how finding the time to train can be tough - I got to be a 4:30 AM club member because of this... For me it's the way to go as I am a morning person.

I'm a freelance Production Supervisor for television shows. Mostly specials, awards and variety shows, many of them of live. Hours can be long and unpredictable, and I almost always have to allow an hour for my commute. Depending on the show, it can also invovle travel.

When I'm not working, I have lots of time to train, but I have a tough time letting myself spend money for gear, travel and race entry fees. When I'm working, I have money but a tough time finding time to train.

3rd year undergraduate student at one of the "top" universities in the US. I also work for the Office of Information Technology -- getting viruses off of students computers, basic networking issues, etc. I am trying to get into a groove with training, but recently my research has piled on. I got a 6k grant for summer research, so I'll be bumming around researching/training this summer before I have to find a real "job". I think I'm going to teach HS (I'll be chem/math/physics certified) for a few years before heading off to grad/law school. I am not sure what I want to do -- but I guess the good thing about being 20 is that I don't have to know yet.

heymickey - 2006-03-29 8:38 PM I am curious because ever since I became a night shift RN, I find it very hard to keep on task when it comes to my training schedule. Every morning I am done at the hospital, I find myself drained completely, so I need to sleep about 4 hours before I can function.QUOTE]

heymickey, i'm a nurse practitioner - spent many years as an RN on the night shift in ICU, I feel your pain. It is a grueling job. BTW - what are you going back to school for?

I work at a tiny (and very fun) user experience consulting company. I help "large" and "major" and some not-so-major companies create software systems that people can actually use. Most of the time my schedule is predictable, but one thing we do is conduct lab and field studies (to observe people using software) and then my training schedule can suffer.

Thank you for all your replies. I read all of them thoroughly. Looking at your busy schedules, I wonder how many of you guys are able to finish in the top (roughly 7%-10%) of your age group, as that was my main goal in triathlon, though it seems it is very out of reach now. Machiavelo, I am so jealous! rnspamela, I recently got accepted to Long Beach State for my Bachelor's in Biology. I hope to go into Medicine as a general surgeon / GI. I am also looking into dental school as a distant option. I've been studying on and off for the DAT and the MCAT, so my brain is fried half the time when I am not with my family. Probably very premature, but I also carry a copy of Harrison's or the Washington Manual of Therapeutics wherever I go, so I am constantly on my toes and am ready to hit the ground running when I get accepted to med school. Recovering from night shift is so tough! I think I may need to take Prozac pretty soon. Thanks, Bluejack, for giving me a glimpse of the future. How long has it been since you finished your residency? Did you have time to squeeze in workouts while you were in school?

I work in Biodefense. Just finished (literally, defended 2 weeks ago) my Ph.D. in Communicable Diseases. Basically I do research aimed at detecting intentional release of microorganisms. I am also adjunct faculty at a rather large local university where I teach Food Safety and at a rather large local community college where I teach Microbiology. I can train whenever I feel like it as long as I am publishing stuff. Hence, in the last 6 months I have run 2 marathons and published 3 papers (not counting the 150 page dissertation). Since I am new to Tris and require MUCHO training, I plan to publish a lot in the next year or so!

Stay-at-home-mom. I started a non-profit (well, we just applied for status)that serves kids with high functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome and their families. It's basically a game club that meets once per month where kids with autism can come for social time and the parents can get support and network. We provide many resources for newly diagnosed families as well, and we also have a nice lending library. I spend a lot of time fund-raising.

In my former life I was a research technician in molecular biology and lab manager/radiation and chemical safety officer for Oregon Health and Sciences Univeristy.

I'm an Assistant Program Director at a Methadone Clinic. We help people with opiate addiction get clean and sober. Hours are great-5am to 2:30pm so that gives me the afternoon to train before I pick up my two little ones (4 y.o and 2 y.o). I really believe I have one of the best jobs in the world!

I'm a rocket man. I get to work by nine a.m. and I’m high as a kite by then. I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife. I’m not the man they think I am at home, I’m a rocket man. And all this science I don’t understand it’s just my job five days a week.

Anybody know of any interplanetary tris?

Previous career: killing people for the gov. Now I have a real job and just do that for fun.
OK not ...really
My company operates and maintains EPA superfund sites, mostly groundwater remediation sites. We also do underground utility construction of electrical and pumping systems. Which means I can train pretty much when I want as long as nothing unusual happens. Problem is ,unusual, is the nature of our business so we have a lot of early mornings, late evenings and some weekend emergencies. Normally midday and weekend evenings are best for training. Not much travel involved but like other professions there are the continuing training requirements to maintain all of our certifications.

If I had a dollar for every time "major" or "very large" was mentioned in this thread I could quit, but since that's not happening -

Right now I'm work with bankruptcies and charge off's at the first bank that Capital One bought.

But that just pays the bills for now, I'm about 7.5 classes away from my Accounting degree

Most securities firms, including mine, do not allow us to mention our firm's names on public  forums on the Internet, such as this, without prior approval from our internal Compliance and Legal departments.  We're a very highly regulated industry.  That's reason for all the "major", "well-known" and other vague descriptions.  If you want to PM or e-mail me I'd love to tell you who I work for...

Mark

Financial Advisor for a major, well-known, household name, very big, very famous Wall Street firm with an office in a very tall building with a great view of Sarasota bay.

I've had my dillusion since my first triathlon - the Rocketman Sprint Tri in Huntsville, AL. I ran the Rocketman Tri for 5 years in a row.

Also, my real job is an engineering manager on the Ground-based Mid-course Defense (GMD) program where we use missiles (rockets) to shoot down incoming ICBMs (rockets). So in that sense, I really am a rocketman.

But since you own that title here on the BT board, I will bow out to your Rocketmeness.

:-)

I was giving a presentation once to a customer that was doing a software migration and discussed the difficulties of "hitting a moving target with a moving target" in terms of their software requirements.  All of a sudden the room burst out laughing.  They explained that their specific charter was to successfully hit moving targets with moving targets.
