Question for those who have done this race before or WI natives, what kind of wind can we expect that time of year?  I am in South Dakota so I am getting used to biking into the wind, but would love to hear Racine is somehow immune to mid-western winds.

I'm from Sioux Falls, SD and HATE the wind on the bike. I despise it.  Last year the wind wasn't bad, I'm praying for no wind as well. The good news is IF there is a wind, the course is always zig zagging so you won't be fighting a headwind for 28 miles straight.

Holy cow the population of this state will drop in half when we are all at Racine.......I also am not a fan of the wind, but these past few weeks have given me some good practice with it.On aside note the hip issue I was dealing with seems to have resolved it's self...

Hi everyone,

I am new to this site and think it is a great place to share all of this information!  I did Racine last year for my first HIM- yes it was at least 101 degrees!  Will also be doing Kansas 70.3 on June 10th- anyone else?  Once Lake Michigan warms up enough I would be interested in any group swims too.   For anyone not from the area, I'm happy to help answer any questions I can.

yep... 101 degrees. it was a hot one! As for the wind, expect anything here. I've done this race when it was the Spirit of Racine. The first year, we had 3 1/2 ft waves in Lake Michigan...what a treat that was. Amy...Great idea planning a group swim. As the water temps warm, pick out a day and hopefully you will have some takers.

We have wind here and like every where else some days it's light others not so much. The prevailing wind is generally out of the west north west. The course does a good job of sending riders out west with a little head wind and turns to get cross winds so it doesn't feel like an hour straight into a blast. The second half you get the wind to push you back. Last year was super hot on the run but perfect riding conditions.

Well, we're less than eight weeks away.....  I see that they have posted the Schedule of Events, but I have not seen anything on the order of the waves.  Any one have any idea about that?  I sure wouldn't mind an early wave.....  just in case I need a time cushion!

Hi All, my name is Rob and I am new to the thread. This will be my first 70.3 too, in fact, this it will most likely be just my second tri Laughing. Looking at the Oly at Elkhart Lake on June 9th. I'm doing a recon there June 2nd, so I guess I should race it the next week.

I don't have a specific training plan, just lots of S/B/R and also about 2-3 hours of water running. This seems to be working for me, but I am starting to feel some pressure-I'm actually watching what I eat now.

For anyone interested in riding the course, TriWisconsin is going to be having a recon ride on Saturday, June 30th.

Looking forward to the race!

Rob,
Thanks for the info about the training ride on June 30th. Gordon_mom and I are doing an open water swim on Monday (5/28) at North Beach in Racine. We don't have a time set (late morning would be ideal). If anyone is interested in joining, we can figure out a time that works for most folks.

Ironman has a system they put waves out in. Typically, and the last 2 years they did this in Racine. They send the pro's out first. Then they send age groups out based on they average finish time of that AG. Highest times to lowest times. The jump around a bit. Last year the 35-40 Men went last, 1hour 50 min behind the leaders.

Hi Foggy,

We didnt get into Michigan yesterday  Storms blowing in and out made it too questionable for our liking specially without guards on duty until June. It's nice to at least have the lake much warmer than it usually is this time of year.  Not that anyone on this site obsessing but... if anyone is interested here is a link to the water temps.  For anyone not familiar with LMichigan it is an ever changing creature.  Just an example: racked our bikes on Saturday for a sprint tri there last year in August and the water temp was in the high 60's but by race morning it had dropped to 50!!  Didn't even bring our wetsuits, big mistake even for a short swim.

Ooof.

Did my first long brick on Saturday (3 hour ride, 30 minute run) which really wasn't that bad since it really hadn't gotten that hot yet.

But then did a 2 hour run on Sunday.  And that hurt.  Alot.  Went through 48 ounces of water in the 2 hours and that just barely kept me hydrated.

It is finally getting hot outside so I'm trying to get out into it as much as I can because I just can't afford not to get some acclimation to the heat.  It was friggen killer.

Great way to practice for what could potentially be another scorcher in Racine.

Just 6.5 weeks till race day.

Y'all ready yet?

Hello Locals,

What up with hotels?  There seems to be only one near the race site.  The other two linked from the IM site are near the international airport about 20 minutes away?

Any recommendation?  Yes I should have booked earlier.  This was an error on my part.

thanks!

There's a Marriott on Highway 20 - 7111 Washington Ave, Racine, WI 53406. About 15 minutes from the race site without traffic. The Radisson in downtown Racine - 223 Gas Light Cir, Racine, WI 53403. The Radisson is maybe 5 minutes from the race site. There's also some hotels along the interstate in Kenosha, WI. Let me know if you would like more information for the Kenosha area hotels.

Hat = in. I just signed up officially, even though I've been planning on it for a while now. This will be my first 70.3, and if it goes well I'll also be doing the Rev3 in Wisconsin Dells.

Last summer I did the Chicago Tri, the Devil's Challenge in Devil's Head WI, and another little sprint. My first Oly of this season is in two weeks in Rockford, IL.

I live in the southern Chicago suburbs (New Lenox), so if anyone from around here wants to get together for rides or swims, let me know! I'm just following a "whatever, whenever" kind of plan, just making sure to log about 20-30 weekly run miles, 100-120 bike miles, and 5,000-7,000 yds in the pool or lake. I try to get up to Ohio St. Beach in Chicago every weekend if I can for 1-2 miles, so if anyone in the area would be up for that I'd love to meet up!

Hi Walinda,

The real racine site has alot of info that might be helful. I know they have a section on camping. I don't know anything about them first hand but maybe others might?  Hope this is helpful.

Question for the veterans-

Are wetsuit helpers available at this race?

This is my first HIM.  How does one handle the hydration at the bike aid stations?  Do I leave my bottle cages empty to accomadate bottles from the aid stations?  Advice/tips here would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Last year there were wetsuit helpers on the way in to transition. They would also put sunscreen on for you.

Hydration on the bike is really all personal preference....I keep my fuel bottles in my cage, with an extra water bottle in my shirt pocket. I swap out the aid station water for the one in my shirt pocket. The bottles on my cages are filled with Hammer perpetuem. Hope that helps!

I have room on my bike for 3 bottles.  So what I'll usually do is put a cheap bottle between my aero bars and drink that first.  Then come the first aid station, I just throw that bottle off to make room for a new bottle from the aid station.  I'll continue to throw away and grab a new bottle for my bottle holder in between my aero bars and keep my other two bottles that are behind my seat with me for the entire ride.  Different strokes for different folks, this is just my preference.
