Greetings,

I don't know where to begin.  Just getting caught up; like other have mentioned this group is moving fast.  Haven't run since last Sunday.  Ended up with a lingering headache for the last two days.  Will most likely will try to get in a run tomorrow afternoon; maybe 5.5 or so.  The on Saturday do a 8.5 or so; no since in trying to make up any runs.  Use it as a recovery week.  Was suppose to do a 13 mile long run on SAT, but I think I will hold off and put a good week in next week since I have the whole week off and will be able to run when it is daylight and not so cold.  I am going to plan to get some CORE workouts going as well.

By the way, has anyone every done the TRX workouts?  I may try it.  Not sure if I want to invest the funds though for the equipment.

Happy holidays everyone.

Ended up doing a swim and run today instead.  About 1k meters open water, then a easy 4 mile run.  Felt pretty good...body is slowly starting to get back to normal.

Good morning all!

Wise move, Brian.  Making up for lost workouts is often a mistake.  (Not that I haven't tried...)

Jason, nice that you can OWS this time of year!

Blanda -- normally saltwater pools do not have the chemical smell to them, at least not nearly to the extent that traditionally chlorinated pools do.  (When I come home from swimming from a traditional pool, my wife knows I've been swimming.  If I want to get in a 'secret' swim (kidding!  sort of), I go to the saltwater pool.)  They both have chlorine, in fact, but the saltwater pool produces a continuous 'flow' at low levels, and (more important) the chemistry of the saltwater pool discourages the formation of chloramines, which are the nasty compounds that give you the chemical smell, eat your clothes, burn your eyes, etc.  If you are getting these things in a saltwater pool, either they've got something out of balance, or you are super-sensitive to it.

Speaking of pools, this is the last day that any of my local pools will be open, so I'll get in another 'run' and swim.  I fear that I'm going to do something crazy next week (pools still closed), like put on a wetsuit and 'pool run' in my parents outdoor pool.

University is officially on 'holiday' now, so even poor sods like me who are required to be 'available' during business hours are now officially off from work.  Yeah!

Have a great day everyone!  I'm installing a new washer and dryer today.  Between curses I'll check in to the group.

Good Morning! Hope everyone is having a great week. I've probably slept in more this week that I have in the last 3 years. No reason to get up early to train when it is finally cool outside for a change.
Once the holidays are over I plan on significantly cleaning up and changing my diet. Every year starts off with great plans that never seem to materialize into a life style change. The main reason for changing my diet are related to changing my recovery/energy levels and toning up so that I actually look like a triathlete.
Is anyone else planning on making a lifestyle diet change next year? Or if you have how did you do it? Right now I'm looking at starting off with using the Clean Eating Diet Plan and then moving into more of a Paleo for Athletes plan as the year progresses. Carbs are such a huge part of my current diet. I honestly don't think I can or should totally eliminate them at this point.

Training plans for the day: Run 30 minutes, L2 bike- 45 minutes and Swimming Drills -40 minutes. Time to get off the computer and get busy!

Wow... that's a great analysis and some excellent points.  I've been working on this one in particular recently:

"Move your arms with acceleration towards the end of the stroke. It will help to keep a higher swimming velocity during the stroke."

For me, by focusing on that moment in my pull, my entire turnover / power improves, though I find I tire faster:

I don't plan to make a wholesale change, but I do plan to clean up my act a little bit.  For the past few months I've certainly found myself indulging quite a bit more than I'm used to.  When all I did was lift weights I found that I ate a lot cleaner, but I also did have the cardio side to burn off as much of the bad stuff.

For me, it will be about cutting the excess, but still allowing myself to enjoy treats and junk - cause I enjoy it.  For what it's worth, I think some age group athletes go overboard on how they eat, and what they consume.  I think moderation is key for someone like me, because otherwise I'm craving the stuff that I deny myself, I see no enjoyment in doing that.  (Just my thoughts on how I view my diet).

You know...I never really thought about that and how others can't OWS or even swim period certain times of the year.

Some of the people I swim with complain that the water is cold...it's like 75 degrees...I think it's perfect.

I will probably still have less than ideal foods occasionally. Until the holidays are over my plan is to substitute less than ideal foods for better choices when possible. I'm hoping this will make the transition over to better food choices easier in a week.

Example: Today I went out on my 30 minute run. At the end of the run I ran into a friend of mine who was starting out on her 20 miler. I decided to move my long run from tomorrow to today instead. Since I hadn't planned on running 11 miles today I didn't take any water/fuel or eat breakfast. I immediately went to the fridge after my run. Pulled out a real Dr. Pepper and started eying the chocolate cake. Hey, instant sugar replacement right? Instead I decided to drink a coconut water and eat Greek Yogurt. After eating the better snack choice the Dr. Pepper and cake didn't even sound good. I just need to make mindful choices on fueling my body in a healthy manner.

Hey gang-I will try to eat better in 2012.  Want to take a look at the Paleo for Athletes book for some ideas.  Right now my weakness is sweets and usually after dinner an hour or so before I go to bed.  If I could substitute something healthy I think I could lose a little "extra" around the mid-section.

For the next few days moderation will be a huge victory.  Tonight is fried oysters and tons of other bad stuff.  PLUS, plenty to wash it down.  Moderation, moderation, moderation.....I just need to keep repeating it to myself so maybe I will do it.

Took advantage of a day off.  I sent the kids to day care as usual and knocked out a 91 mile ride.  Weather was overcast and low 40s all day.  Contemplating going out for a 52 mile group ride tomorrow (68 after I ride from home to the LBS and back).

Diet!  I eat what I can when I can.  I do my best to balance it out, making sure I get enough protein, proper carbs and proper fatty acids.   The learning curve I will have this year is fueling during training/racing for the HIM.

Happy I got a run in this evening, even if it was 31* tonight. It was a little over 2.5 miles and I feel good even though I really havent' been running much, I wont get much chance over the next few days.

As far as dieting goes ... well ... hmmm ... let me know how that works out for y'all.

Now that is funny.  The pool at my university is kept around 75 in winter (78 in summer).  I agree -- 75 is about perfect.  It is chilly when I first get in, but after a few hundred it is just right.

Rene -- I agree that one of the best strategies is to eat well first.  When I feel peckish, I try to reach for an apple (or orange, of carrots, whatever) first.  That cuts out a large percentage (though not all...) of the muffins, etc.  I don't always succeed, though.

Dennis -- nice ride!  I'm going to use you as motivation.  I'm hoping to start a regular regime of long weekend rides at the new year.  I guess that's my "New Year's Resolution".

I spent much of my day on my feet today, which is not what I need to be doing right now, but family duties come first...

Have a great Holiday weekend everyone.  I'll check in as possible, but lots of family stuff happening over the net couple of days.

Matthew....funny!  Nice run as well.

Dennis-great ride.  How's the backside feel?  What type of seat do you use?

I'm at the in-laws.  Behaved last night with eating and drinking so one down.  Will likely do a 5-6 mile run a little later. A nice dirt road nearby and I am always glad to get a break from running on concrete like I do at home.

My kids are 17 on 12/26 and 18.  I miss the days when they were small and could not contain their excitement about Christmas and Santa coming.  Its great to have everyone together but there is just something about little kids at Christmas that gets everyone excited.  I'm guessing that I will really enjoy having grandchildren..........in 10-15 years.

Have a great day everyone.

Randy. I can totally relate to what you said about the kids and Christmas. Our kids will be 19 and 21 next month.

Does anyone have any cool tri gifts on their wish lists this year?

My Christmas gift is somewhat tri related. Last week we bought a new Honda CR-V to replace my 10 year old Camry. The tri bike fits perfectly in the back with the seats down.

Schedule for today: 30 min run, 45 min bike and swimming drills.

Yeah, not to gloat but my kids still love Christmas!

I'm working on remodeling the laundry closet and installing a new washer and dryer.  Fun times.  Other than that, I hope to get in a bike ride somewhere in the middle of Christmas cooking.  The pool is closed but I might make it over to my parents' pool for a 'run', if I can bring myself to do that (it's outdoors....

Have a wonderful day everyone!

All this talk of cold water is making me shiver.  Brrrr!!!!

The crud has temporarily halted my workouts, but I'll be back .  My whole family is in varying stages of it, so our get-together may have to be postponed.

As for the eating better stuff, I have strayed a bit recently on my after dinner snacking.  I don't do well with totally eliminating it, but replacing the salty crunchies with an apple or some almost defrosted frozen strawberries works.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Got in a 5.15 mile run this morning.  First time my legs have felt somewhat fresh since last Saturday's 5K. Enjoyed the cool morning on a nice packed dirt road. Had planned on taking tomorrow off but may need to get a short run in to get out of the house for a bit.  Great to have all my wife's family together and appreciate being a part of their Christmas but a few minutes out on a run tomorrow may be good therapy for me ......unless I get some cool toy/toys to play with.

No big tri related gifts for me this year.  Getting a nice slant board though to help with my calf tightness but don't know of anything else.

Squirt - I hear you about the crud; I ended up with some kind of stomach flu the last two days after two days of headaches.  I basically haven't been able to do anything all week.  I have next week off so I'll get back into it and try to do some early morning workouts.  I want to get back to a routine of doing my Core workouts again so theis might be the week to begin breaking some habits.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Sorry to hear about the crud.  No fun.  Take it easy, get better, and let's hit 2012 like there's no tomorrow!

I finished my laundry closet project.  Christmas Eve activities begin soon.  Happy Holidays everyone!  Christmas will be a no-computer day for me, so I'll see you all on the other side.
