Special Edition wheels that support athletically minded charitable organizations.  (This is 95% finalized.  More details to come on this.  We are very excited about this.)

Now this is VERY COOL!!!!  don't know what "athletically minded charitable organizations" means exactly...but I LOVE companies that do this.  I know there are a zillion charities out there to choose from...and I know you will have your favorites... but I hope you will consider an autism/special needs charity.  Just my 2 cents.

you will get my business because of your willingness to give to others (and yes...because your wheels look killer too!!)

IMO, I think the goal of a group buy should be to get your order in first (ahead of individual orders)...not to get a discount.  I think everyone will agree that their price point is already dirt cheap.

If that's the case...I'm in.

I completely 100% agree with you on this. It seems that everybody's main concern is the pre-order/ship date and not their pricing, which says a lot about their suggested price points. Would definitely be on this group buys once we get the go on it. Great job on the wheels guys, they look great. Looking forward to the updates.

Thanks for the comments.  To be 100% honest offering discounts will be challenging.  Our goal has been to offer affordable race wheels and we have done everything in our power to keep prices low.   If you look at our projected prices and the quality of the product/components we are using, you can see that we don't have much room to move and that people are already getting a pretty good deal.

I think that creating a high quality product is the first step to making a sale and earning a customer.  That said, the relationship with that customer means nothing if you cannot give them a high level of customer service and a good warranty AFTER the sale.  In order to do that a company has to make some money.  That's simply business.

Thank you for your understanding,

Thank you!  Athletically minded charities means organizations like Team in Training, War on ALS, CAF, Jenny's Light etc.  We are negotiating with a list of charities at the present time and doing are best to make this happen.

I'm very glad you like the idea AND our wheels.

FoggyGoggles - 2011-03-25 3:35 PM I know the wheels in the video were only prototypes, but could you let us know how they felt? Did you get to get out and test them out on your own yet?

The bigger question:

Do they sound like a drum as you roll up on someone and pass them?

Do they make the known "whooom whooom" sound so that the slower person knows it's time to really speed up?

The sound is the whole point of the wheels!

I have ridden them.  I'll be getting our for a longer ride this weekend.  To date we have had a handful of people test out the wheels.  I personally have noticed the stability of the wide rim.  It's hard to explain but it feels like you are on rails.  They just seem to roll very well.  They picked up well when you stand up and corner well.  I'm very happy with the prototypes to date.  Here are some comments from some of our test riders.

Performance:

Stiffness: The wheel withstood several 1500+ watt sprints with no noticeable flexing, or loss of true. It tracked reliably through turns, inspiring confidence in it's wide profile and build. I was quite impressed with this performance, as I was absolutely expecting to be able to twist them out of shape the way I do with other wheels.

Overall: My overall impression of these wheels is impressed. They are solid performing wheels, with excellent features rarely offered by other wheels on the market, and not found anywhere as a complete package.

I'm still collecting reviews from other riders.  Some riders who are used to riding tubular wheels mentioned they could feel the weight when accelerating and others have mentioned that the anodized brake tracks grab exceptionally quick/well.  This could come as a surprise if you are used to carbon brake tracks.

We'll be posting reviews as we get more of them.

Thanks for the interest,

Haha!  They definitely have a "you'd better get moving" sound.  That is such a great sound when you are the one responsible for making it.  But such an awful sound when you hear it coming up from behind.  In my first triathlon I learn about that sound about 1 mile into my bike!

Take care,

We will be selling the following wheels...

60mm front and rear

90mm front and rear

Disc

Training/Climbing Wheels with our wide brake track rim.

Hey Chris...do you have any info on the training/climbing wheels?  As far as what we could expect for weight (ballpark)?  I'd be really interested in a set of wheels in the 1400g range.

I don't know all of the weight details yet but I can tell you we'll be heavier than 1400grams. I'm guessing 1600-1700grams.

Haha!  That position is the work of Todd Carver from Retul in Boulder Colorado.  I went out there a couple of years ago to have him fit me.  It was a great experience.  We'll have the disc photos up as soon as we can.

All the best,

I'm all for this, too. Really glad that you guys are offering special edition wheels. Do you know if they will be available for pre-order the same time as the initial pre-order or at least a timeline as to when they'd be available. I plan on getting a set of Flo wheels, but don't mind waiting on this.

Our final disc prototype won't be ready for a few weeks. I promise we'll get a video up as soon as it's ready. We will also be checking for frame clearance issues. I can say that the disc was designed to fit all frames with a maximum width of 27.2mm. Thanks for the interest,

A non-purchasing question - well, actually I guess it is.  When/who should be buying/riding the 90 on the front vs the 60, if you're running a disc or disc cover on the back?

i don't think you are going to find a specific answer, because it depends on a few factors.  are you comfortable riding 90 mm vs 60mm, difference can be noticable on a windy day.

general guidline is deeper wheels tend to be faster at lower yaw angles.  as you increase speed generally you fight lower wind yaw angle.

This is a bit of a tough question.  It has been said that unless you are averaging something high like... 24mph+, a 90mm wheel isn't as aero as a 60mm wheel.

There is a lot that goes into that statement.  Wheels have different drag values at different wind angles (also know as yaw angles).  For a slower athlete, the "average" yaw angle experienced makes the 60mm wheel more aerodynamic.  For the faster athlete the 90mm wheel is a better choice.

That said, there are so many variables in that equation that it is in my opinion nearly impossible to say one wheel is better.

I think the biggest factor would be crosswind forces and how confidently you can ride the bike.  A deeper wheel will be harder to handle in strong cross winds.  If you are a timid rider or very light weight you might lean towards the 60mm wheel to prevent yourself from having to break your aero position.  If you love crosswinds and are a great bike handler, you might choose the 90mm wheel.  In the long run both wheels will be much more aero than a standard box rim wheel.

Finally, after we go to the wind tunnel it will be much easier for me to help answer the question about our wheels in particular.

I know I haven't given you a definitive answer but I'm not sure a definitive answer exists.

Let me know if you have any more questions as I may have confused you more

Take care,
