fgump - 2012-09-24 8:49 PM I believe WTC is 76.1. Yesterday it was stated as 75 so was fully legal, and felt awesome, for the Finish Strong Half. I plotted temps from April to now, and on June 2 this year it was 79F.

Good for those of us who like swimming...not so great for you crazy runners though.

Wait a minute...I thought the cut off for wetsuits was 83*-those of us who don't care about awards/points etc. I thought I saw that on the website. Anyway, I am in. I am wetsuit dependant in OW but have several months to break that habit.

For the scenario you have presented, the cutoff is 83.8 degrees.

To each their own but I cannot imagine swimming 1.2 miles in 83.8 degree water in a wetsuit! Hydrate before you do that because you're gonna sweat!

If you knew my swimming skills, you would not hesitate to use a wetsuit. I sink like a rock. I can swim forever if I don't have to stay bouyant. I know that is "cheating" but much safer for me. I am back of the BOP so i will never be in your way!
I will start hydrating now....

Are there any other slower riders out there who are interested in a group ride on the Raleigh Half route sometime (or multiple times) in the spring? Seems like most of the group rides are in the 19-20 mph range. With the kind of hills on this ride, I'll be lucky to hit 15-16 mph.

Me!  I am good and slow!!  I live in Charlotte but with a little planning I could make it to Raleigh a couple of times I am sure.

There will be some members from my tri club from Southern Pines/Pinehurst that will do training rides on the course at that speed next spring.

I think he is talking about me! I ride that speed and I'll definitely be doing some training rides in the spring.

How are all the training rides going along the course?  Are the hills pretty consistent over the whole thing or are they more predominant at the start or finish?  Does the run hit pretty good hills?

I too would be interested in some training rides on the Raleigh course once we can get some clear 50+ degree days. I'd be looking for 1 17-18mph pace.

How do people handle the logistics of that? You need to start at Jordan and finish downtown... how to get back to Jordan?

Your pace seems good for me I can take 3 bikes back in my element, I would be willing to park downtown...Sundays will be good for me around 1st of April after my March Marathon.

I'm in for Saturday training rides at a 19-20 mph pace. I don't really need to wait for warmer weather. 40 degrees is fine depending on wind. I can carry 3-4 bikes back from Raleigh in my truck. I can do the occasional Sunday as well.

Now that I think about it, are you guys talking about riding in a pace line or riding more like we'll be in the Triathlon?

Probably some of both at times, as paceline riding will be fun at spots, and not possible at others (hills).  We will certainly be able to paceline on 64 (single file), Beaver Creek, and Pea Ridge, plus parts of Old 1.  As it gets hillier and into Holly Springs/Raleigh, probably not so much.

interesting. anyone understand the reasoning behind the wave structure. I understand the pros being sent off first, but I'd think that M25-29 and M30-34 would go next instead of M55+. Is it to give the older age groups more time to beat the cutoff? I know I'm not going to be swimming over anyone in the previous waves, but maybe some of the faster people will be? Thought the order was interesting.

Also, anyone been doing any open water training yet?

That is a lot of waves! I agree that it is a little weird how the pros go and then the older guys, with the young quicks starting much later.

More importantly, Bass (40-44) gets a 4 min headstart over Holdstock (40-44) and Lambooy (40-44) (and apologies for those of you in our age group that I am missing!!) in the middle-aged smackdown.

Holy kwap!  A 7:10am start time for me! I actually stand a chance of NOT being the last person out of the water.  And with a little luck, I might have enough people pass me that I can draft on a few of them for a bit!  I'm liking this!  And I don't even have to bring my AARP card!

I'm also wave 8.

I'm trying to remember if the other Ironman HIM I did was structured this way.  I suspect it's to minimize the overall amount of time there are people are on the course.

reasoning I have heard from other RD's. Get the generally slower people starting early and they can reopen roads sooner so as to try an limit impact on local resdidents. Also the possibility of having police for less time in the beginning parts of race and that is cheaper.

Bring on Wave 8. Oh Bill I do know someone who will be in your wave. I would prefer he was 10min behind me though b/c he will most probably ride around 2:16/17

You fish will be past me before the first turn buoy.  Maybe even by the 3rd marker buoy...

It's going to be a long day out there.  And then the bike will start.
