![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() to add. we were on course for 49 miles and I showed 3215 elevation gain. if you add the first 7 miles, it's probably pretty close to their estimate, maybe just short. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the detailed report, Steven! The bike course sounds challenging and I'm very excited! My only quesiton is, weather wise, what do you predict will be the temps like on race day? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not a weather expert, nor a Las Vegas resident so take it with a grain of salt. Oct is a transition month so it can be a bit tricky to predict but it should be a bit cooler than current temps. Avg high for early Oct is normally high 80s and low 60s. But we could still get a 100 degree day. Prepare for everything and we'll see what we get in a few weeks. I will say that 100 in the desert was much easier than 85 degrees in humid Hawaii. |

" I will say that 100 in the desert was much easier than 85 degrees in humid Hawaii." - I completely agree. I grew up in Philippines and the humidity is similar or probably even worse than in hawaii. I'm looking at accuweather.com right now, their prediction is a high of 91. Much better than what it is right now, which is 105. I was at Palm Springs this long weekend and it was 112. It was painful and i was in the pool. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks so much for the detailed bike report! I'm looking forward to it! In regards to temps, I have gone to Vegas the first week of October for seven years now, and I have needed a jacket a couple years (lows in the 40s, highs in the 70s) and been sweating at the pool a couple of years (lows in the 70s, highs in the 90s). Hopefully this year will be right in the middle! Originally posted by buckeyeguy77 Nice course description. Very helpful. Is anyone else shipping their bikes to the race? I was going to ship my bike, but after finding that the hotel I'm staying at (The M Resort) handles all shipments through the onsite UPS store and they charge a $60.00 handling fee to receive and to ship out, I bought a hard shell bike box from craigslist for $80 and will be checking it as baggage. $75.00 each way on SouthWest. Price came out nearly identical, but I keep the box for next time I want to travel with my bike. In all my research, I found the cheapest way to ship it was through shipbikes.com. Their price really wasn't bad if you have a bike box already, but they also sell some nice sturdy options that look like a good way to go. Edited by Bradleykd 2014-09-05 10:32 AM |

Do you have to disassemble your bike in order for it to get in the bike box? Right now I have to disassemble mine to ship it, but have to have it done professionally, so that's an added expense as well. It's looking like after shipping and bike shop costs it's going to be around $300-$350. I'll have to check out shipbikes.com. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The box I was going to get, the ebike shipper, all you had to do was remove your wheels, seat post and handlebars. 3 small bolts and two quick releases and you're back in business in the hotel. Plus I have to do the same thing for the airline box too. Just mark your seat post with a piece of tape, and everything else should be perfect when you put it back on. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Interesting we have to check our run gear in the day before the race. I'm planning on using the shuttle race morning. Since I'm in the 2nd to last wave (last besides the relay teams) my support crew can sleep in a little more until heading out to the swim start. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by ChrisM Bib numbers also up I enjoy finding the California Penal Code for my race number, pretty happy with this one, especially that this can be referred to "safe blowing"... 464. Any person who, with intent to commit crime, enters, either by day or by night, any building, whether inhabited or not, and opens or attempts to open any vault, safe, or other secure place by use of acetylene torch or electric arc, burning bar, thermal lance, oxygen lance, or any other similar device capable of burning through steel, concrete, or any other solid substance, or by use of nitroglycerine, dynamite, gunpowder, or any other explosive, is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 for a term of three, five, or seven years. |

I didn't see that AWA are in an earlier wave. Luckily I snapped up a Bronze AWA last year, so I think I'll do the earlier wave. Try to beat the heat and possibly the wind. Plus, I look better in a black swim cap than a florescent pink swim cap. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Interesting about the run elevation. Based on what was posted to the FB page, we were thinking it was closer to 750ft gain. Either way, still hilly. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 550 feet is very modest for a 13 mile course. If it's true, a sub 1:40 run is not out of question. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() sign me up too for a 1:40 run ..what is everyone's total target time? mine is sub 6 ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sub 6:30...or just finish, depending on the weather. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() | ![]() I really don't know what to expect from this course, since the course info is so varied. If the weather cooperates, I'm hoping to go sub-5. Otherwise, I have no expectations and just hope to be proud of a strong finish ![]() 2 and a half weeks out and it looks like the water temperature is still in the 80's. If this holds, it will be a nice Jacuzzi swim! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Throwing out a <5:30 but that's if the heat finally breaks. Looking like a good chance now that this will be non-wetsuit swim. Lake temp still holding at 80. |
