A race a month is doable just don't taper for all of them. Treat some as just catered training days.

Glad to see the board up and kicking.

Lexy- I'll add my thoughts to your questions. I like to swim a couple of moderately hard 25M after I am warmed up, and for some reason this seems to help my form improve. I'm not sure if anyone else tries this, but it tends to work for me. As for one race per month, I agree with pretty much everyone. I like to have a plan for each race, so it's either a long training day or I am racing hard. Either way, appropriate recovery before and after is key.

I"m 0/2 for training in 2008 but not stressing about it one bit. Came down with a pretty bad 24 hour sickness and am still not quite 100%. I decided to take it easy again just so this doesn't become a 5-7 day flu. I"m planning on getting a workout in tomorrow. Hope everyone is getting off to a good start in 2008.

Lex, that's great!  1000M in a row is no small feat.  I'd lose count, myself .

I went for my first run today in nearly 2 weeks - and it felt surprisingly good.  I was all distressed that I was going to be so out of shape that it would suck and I'd spiral downward into the depths of "ALL that work - down the drain in 2 weeks" despair.  Except that, I felt fine, the run felt good, and I feel encouraged to go again tomorrow.

From now on, I'll call my holiday-induced break from running the "Christmas taper" cuz it seems like that's all it was .

I was all prepared to battle to get back on the wagon, but I'm mentally already back on.  Yay!

I saw a lot of resolutioners out on my run today too.  A lot more runners than I am used to seeing, and most of them in funny running garb, so you can tell they just threw on some crappy warm stuff to go for a run.  I wonder how long I will keep seeing them??

Think of it as a fueling stop

I think you left San Diego at the right time. This storm is amazing. It almost looks like Louisiana weather.

I am hoping to get to get on here more often and check in with everyone. In the meantime, I didn't like having to jump to page 2 to find the thread so wanted to get it bumped back up. Hoping to get some good workouts this weekend. We'll see.

Any big plans for the weekend? workouts or otherwise?

Hey man, get well and make sure you are good to go before pushing yourself. Don't want to get it back because you weren't fully recovered.

Great job on the run today Lisa. It is all about getting out there and getting those consistent patterns built back into our lives. Once it becomes a habit again, it makes it so much easier to just go. I struggled to get back on the wagon after the holidays where every night seemed like another party with great food and well umm BEER!!!

hey now... I far from a resolutioner and I'm one of the idiots out there who has to make do with sometimes just throwing some funny running garb on haha living in a northern community its sometimes hard to get the clothing I desire.. and since I usually run on the treadmill during the winter it hasn't been much of a problem yet! Regardless... nice work on getting out there and back into it, enjoy it!:-)

I'm working midnights all weekend, but trying to get some workouts in anyways, I've had such a crap week with very little sleep and a back problem that I've been trying to take it kind of easy I guess. Swam today about 1500M, 34 min run tonight on the dreadmill..felt pretty good.

Probably another swim tomorrow and maybe a quick bike if my back isn't killing me... had a massage today which was a life saver!!

Hope you guys enjoy the weekend!

Hey Lex I'm back on dayshift this weekend, so I get to feel like a normal person for a month. I had a real nice 7 miler this morning followed by a half hour of weights. I hope your back starts feeling better. I hope everybody has a good week. The kids start back to school Tuesday so I can really sink back into my training. Supposed to be 70 degrees Monday a record, CRAZY wheather.

Tim

Tim--> good job on the 7Miles today! I don't know how you do an entire month (or whatever..) of midnights. I'm on my third one and have had enough! I can't function normally like this. You must look forward to going back to the day shift!

Just so you guys know I'm a water treatment plant operator we run 24/7, were on a julian calendar 28 days. My schedule looks like this 12 hour shifts 5:30am to 5:30pm sun. wed. thur. one week, the next is mon. tues. fri. sat. so over a two week period I work 7 days and every other weekend. After 28 days we shift to nights, the shift change and giving up every other weekend is the hard part.

The good part at work is I have a weight room, I have mapped out a 1 and 3.2 mile run route, and when the wheather is good I can do some swimming in some of the basins. I also keep a fixed gear bike here to tool around on. Out of work I have 2 or 3 days off during the week while the kids are at school to train.

It can get old but it does have its advantages. Also the plant sits on the bike route for IMLOU and I work that day so if you participate I will be cheering for you on the companies tab.

Stop talking Tim SUAT

Gadzooks. That could get old real quick. I did 4 years of oilfield work, and was on call for 7 days, 24 hours a day, with a 4 day week. 4 years was all that I could stand. How long a break do you get in the shift?

It all depends the plant pretty much runs it self so you have alot of down time. When you have problems it can be a real long day, along with the fact that I have enough chlorine and ammonia to retire most of Louisville if the wind is right.

Tim, Um... swimming in a water treatment plant basin. Sounds like fun. NOT! Seriously though, sounds like you do a great job with fitting training in around your life, considering.

Today was my first day on my new training plan from my coach. I'm pretty excited to get it off the ground. We'll start out slow just to get my consistency in place, then ramp up.

Did anyone join the Kona lottery? I did. I probably have like a 1 in 10000 chance, but that would be really cool if I got in. Since it's just a few days after my anniversary, we could make Hawaii our yearly trip. *hopeful sigh*

We honeymooned in Hawaii in 2006 and volunteered at Kona at the tail end of the trip. It was great. Here's a pic of me and Michellie Jones (sort of). I was volunteering in the transition area (that's me in the yellow shirt and hat) and she was just passing through on her way to a win.

SOunds like a good way to operate, you have to be at work anyways so might as well take advantage of the opportunity to train when you can. Cool

Cool pic Mike. Had to be awesome to see the pros coming through and no better race to volenteer at.

I didn't sign up for the lottery but it is definately on my radar someday hopefully. I am a long way from being in that kind of shape but working at it daily.

Great pics Lisa Cool

I WILL finally be posting pics on here by summer in the before and after photos once I get rid of this extraness of me. I am bustin my hump right now and eating great. I am in the 25 in 25 contest and so far it is going awesome. Our first weigh in is tomorrow and I am hoping for a great kickstart to that challenge.

Please everyone hold me accountable to the weight loss. Last New Years I weighed 208 and got it down to mid 180's by May but kind of let myself go a bit over the summer while training for Redman Iron Distance and got back to mid 190's for the race. I was so pissed that I justified long runs and long rides for shoveling food down my pie hole anytime I wanted. Yell

So now I weighed 211 on New Years and am shooting for the moon to get sub 180 for IM CDA and absolutely rock the course.

Anyone else have big concrete goals on the map???

Shermbelle - 2008-01-08 10:48 PM

Anyone else have big concrete goals on the map???

I have a few big goals:

1) hit a sub 2hr half mary this year

2) Do that Century without wanting to kill myself (questions re: that below)

3) get BF on my scale down to 25% OR hit 125 lbs.  (my parents scale sheds 4% automagically)

4) Do an Oly

5) Double all my distances from '07 (should not be hard - I slacked 9/12 months in '07)

** So, with putting together my plan, I am finding that I will pretty much be doing LSD bikes on Saturdays and runs on Sundays.  Is this asking for big trouble??  I don't know how I feel about riding 40 miles one day and then trying to run 13 miles the next....Any advice?  What do you normally do, as a triathlete, when you have 2 LSD's in 2 disciplines to do in a week?  Since I've never done anything but a sprint and I didn't really train, I never had to deal with this

Thanks guys!

My personal opinion is that a 40 mile bike ride isn't really that a long ride. It's only 2-3 hours long which I've always found is much easier than a 2-3 hour run.

I think that you'll find it easier than you think. You won't really be stressing the legs on the bike, as long as you stay fueled up and don't crank it too hard. You might find that it's going to be a nice recovery from the runs over the week.
