Hey everyone.   I visited by local bike shop to take a look at a better bike.  The shop owner recommended that as a beginner I would be better off going with an aluminum frame and carbon forks.   He said that he has seen too many people spend a ton on a carbon frame and then figure out that they really don't have the time or knees or whatever for riding.     Make sense?

Here is the bike I'm looking at:

http://www.bianchiusa.com/09_c2c_nirone_c_tiagra_comp.html

actual frame color is like this one:

http://www.bianchiusa.com/09_c2c_nirone_c_veloce_comp.html

My first bike was a Bianchi ... I crashed it. Or, rather, a car crashed into me. In my extremely humble opinion, I'd say go with the best components you can afford, regardless of frame material... You may also want to consider looking online, too. I ended up buying my current bike online after 2 or 3 shops saw my weight at the time and didn't want to help. But I got all ultegra with 105 front derailler for a little under $1,100 online. The only thing I had to do was attach the handlebars. And plan to have to replace the seat right away. Or, if you're like me, four or five times.

There are many good aluminum frames. Especially for a first good bike I'd say no reason to pay for carbon. However, as Susie says, you want the best components you can afford. In the Shimano line, Tiagra level components are the lowest you should consider. 105 is considerably better; for a beginner it's absolutely the best bang for the buck.

My first bike was a Target special Danali, no componets, nada...it did me a wonderful job, in ever race my pace was 17mph+.... I now a a fuji carbon CC3...differences are weight, not mine it's, it is very smooth and easy to control, I have doubled my speed on hills, and it has shimano componets that have helped with various hot spots I was having on my feet, and it is just a better fit because I was measured/fitted at the shop, and at Target I just got the bike down from the rack jumped on and road it around the toy section, and bought it, but it was a great bike for $80.00 bucks.

Hi all,

I did my first track workout yesterday.  Susie (offthegrid) asked me to explain it/talk about it in the group thread.  I, unfortunately, don't know much about it.  A friend invited me to join her, and I agreed.  I know it helps with speed, and learning pacing.  But, I know nothing other than that.  Can someone explain it to both of us?

My daughter developes my speed workouts, of course I'm not doing any right now, but once I have been running consistantly it is ok to do them, if you just go out and do a speed workout without having the foundation of running some distance regularly you are setting yourself up for injury.

My last speed workout consisted of 1/2 mile warm-up x2 400m, tempo pace-2min. rest between,
x3 200m, full out, 2min. rest, and then x6 50m strides (working on head position, legs lifting, shoulders back and pumping arms.....full out, then I did a mile cool down and a lot of stretching.
Always log your times for future reference.

Funny thing is I hate running, but I enjoy track/speed workouts...go figure.

I guess for me the benefits were: increased speed, increased lung capacity and oxygen supply, using different muscle groups, working your core muscles, improved arm swing technique.
Speed workouts when done properly will help your body on race day...because the core muscles and good posture/ technique will hang in there and help you get to the finish line when your other muscle have fatigue overload....you just have to train them.

Again....no expert here, just listen to my daughters college coach, her and read a lot.

Happy Training!!!!!

I hoped that someone from BT would see it, recognize my username, and introduce themself to me. So far, it hasn't happened, but while I pass people on the bike they sometimes say things like "You're no Hill Slug!" It always makes me smile.

MDHillSlug - 2009-02-18 9:54 AM I did a really hard run this morning, maximum effort, to see what I'm capable of at this point. In spring of 2007 I was routinely doing this pace. I never got it back after my ankle sprain in June 2007. I don't really think it has much to do with the sprain, but more with the increased volume of swimming and biking. I'd be dangerous if I could run!

Great job on the run girl ! Loved browsing your albums, thanks for pointing out that we actually have them ! lol

I was in spin class tonight (on another endless 25 minute standing hill climb........sigh) and since I was kinda bored (although working out........really I was ...lol)

I got to thinking, I've never ridden a bike in a group.......or in a race.  My first tri will be indoors, so it occurred to me that I have no idea what bike "etiquite" is (Or how to spell it as well).

So, any pointers on rules..... like properly passing someone, or being passed ....... just in general stuff I have no idea about ?... Do you have to tell someone you are passing, or ring the bell on the bike  ?  "RING RING".........

We finally did get to sit tonight and spin, but not before climbing freakin Mt. Whitney !...... good grief, I better get up muscular and 3 lbs thinner tomorrow !

Nighty night my wonderful team !

The general rule is keep right except when passing. Never cross the center line. No drafting (keep 3 bike lengths back). Passing needs to be completed in something like 15 seconds or you need to drop back. When passing, it's often customary to yell "passing on your left!" or "on your left!" but not everyone does it. This, of course, is where our fearless leader got her user name ;)

Need I tell you that serious bikers would never have a bell on their race bike!  Surprised ;)

i told my kids that when i raced in danskin last year it was the first time i ever got to say "on your left" and what it meant and stuff. so now when they're racing down the street and one passes the other, the passer always shouts out "ON YOUR LEFT!!" every single time it cracks me up!! LOL

gotta say though, i said it a lot in danskin, and it was my FAVORITE thing to say EVER!!! LOL

Happy Hump Day everyone! Well, hope it was a happy one...I know some of you in different time zones are already one day closer to the weekend! I am just doing a little procrastinating before getting into some marking. It is report card time...ugh... which means lots of marking and writing.

Dan- it's a great looking bike. My hubby has a Bianchi green bike and he loves it as his road bike and he had a few great tri's on it before his loving wife got him a Cervelo P2C last year.

Nicole- love the new avatar! Look at those wicked calves!

Julie- cool new hat! I hadn't heard of SweatVac before. Let me know how it feels/works!

In terms of track workouts...ditto what Amy said. There are so many benefits from doing track workouts- teaching turnover, good form, building strength, strong core, improving anaerobic threshold and the body's ability to handle/process lactic acid. Most of us can get pretty comfortable with our steady runs and they absolutely have their place in building endurance and managing pace but in order to see more improvement, particularly with speed, it is important to add speed sessions- either on the track or field or even on your regular route. Using a track is nice as it is a measured distance, often indoors and clear of snow/ice/debris, and sometimes also a cushioned surface. Do be mindful to change directions from time to time, particularly if it is a smaller track (200m). If there are no tracks close by, consider using a treadmill to do some speed intervals or on the roads consider doing pickups and strides between telephone/light posts.

Soy milk...definitely a fan. It did take some time for the hubby and I to adjust and we started with the vanilla soy before switching to regular soy. So Nice, So Good, and Silk...we'll switch between them. Typically we just have it on our cereal, though I have used it in lattes or even just warmed up and frothed. I hadn't heard about cancer risk and that is a little disconcerting- might have to look more into that one.

Have a wonderful Thursday, gang!

oooooh....can't believe that I forgot to share...with my entry into the tri world, my sister bought me a wetsuit for my birthday. After lots of procrastination on my side, sizing, and searching online, I finally got it yesterday! Tried it on today and it fits like a glove! It took pretty much forever to get on...and hubby and I had a good laugh thinking if all tri's started on the beach but with the wetsuits at your feet and you had to put it on after the gun went off.  I am so excited to try it out- though it will be a few months yet before the lakes thaw out. I may have to talk a friend into bringing hers to the pool and we can look like geeks together.

I love my wetsuit!!!!! The first time for me was a little strange and I fought it a bit....so just relax and play around with the feeling and then...............take off Also, most wetsuits should not be in a chlorine...make sure your pool is salt water pool. Enjoy the wetsuit ride!!!

Just wanted to add don't be afraid to say "on your left" or something if slow people are riding to the left instead of the right. This is a race!!! At Danskin, where most are first-timers, I also would sometimes say something encouraging, especially if I saw someone struggling.

By the same token, stay to the right if you are not passing.

I also think it's courtesy to point out potholes, or to signal if I'm going to slow down a little bit because of a turn or grabbing a water bottle. Also signal if you're going to pull over for any reason. People are not *supposed* to be drafting, but I tend to oversignal rather than undersignal.

So last night I tried a little active recovery by riding the trainer really easy. I'm not sure it did anything, but at least I got some butt time in the saddle.

I also did a nice core workout. I was sweating far more from that than the trainer ride. I used to *hate* doing ab work, but it's growing on me a little bit as I get stronger. I want to get a stability ball for at home, and my lunchtime gym doesn't have them yet since that section is still under construction.

Unfortunately I think the only workout I'll get tonight is shoveling this horrible snow/ice mixture from our steep alley.

yippee!! What brand did you end up with?

I am probably going to rent one for any longer races I do this year, and then look to buy next year since I am losing weight.

oops, wanted to add that my weight is up for the 2nd day in a row, but I'm back on track with the nutrition. Half the day yesterday wasn't too great but I did make a nutritious (and yummy) dinner with 2 cups of veggies virtually every color of the rainbow.

I'm proud for getting back on track so quickly and not getting into this "all or nothing" mindset that I'm so prone to.

also, dunno if folks here saw there is going to be a new, 12-week no sugar challenge starting March 1. Winner gets $50 toward a charity race. I'm going to give it a shot!

Amy, Susie, Nicole, Yvonne:  thanks for your feedback on the bike.   I will definitely go with at least the 105.    I hesitate to push higher because I know that if I really get into the riding, I will move up to a carbon frame in a year or two.

Susie:  did you enjoy riding the Bianchi before the crash?

Yvonne: glad to hear your dh liked the Bianchi.  He's a very lucky guy - the Cervelo P2C is one hot looking bike and the reviews are great.

I *loved* my Bianchi ...

I was looking to get a Bianchi this time around, but the shop only had a 54 and refused to take my measurements or get a 52 for me to try.

Definitely try a few other brands out if you haven't, though ...

I love all of this discussion about speed training!  I used to just pound the pavement, then go out and race. I didn't really "train".  But after I started reading and implementing what I read, my race times started to go down.  I'm a big advocate for interval training (despite all of my complaining about Torture Dan ), but I also believe it's important to work long runs into my training (for endurance), and also hills and tempo runs.  Anything I can do to make it easier on race day (yeah, right).

there was article in March's Bicycling magazine also about interval training. It said many cyclists didn't know what to do, so just didn't do any intervals. There were a couple of examples of what to do on the bike to do intervals.

Personally, it always feels to me like EVERY workout is an interval. I look forward to the day when it's not so hard all the time.
