Feeling a bit beat up today...My legs did not enjoy my run at all this evening.

Something I was thinking about during my awful run though:

I know its been brought up a few times throughout the forums about training a fast walk for IM run. Anyone think there is a benefit to say doing a long walk every week or adding some extra time of "fast walk" onto the weekly long run? I'm just trying to be realistic...I don't want to walk the marathon and I have ran and entire marathon before...but maybe I will have to walk some of the marathon in the IM...and I figure trying to get some fast walk into my training routine leading up to IMLP might be somewhat useful? Thoughts? Anyone considering it for their training too?

Hey Melissa, I'm feeling beat up too.... trying to turn any intensity down.  Going into this IM thing, I've been thinking all along that if I can run a half marathon and then walk the second half that would be ok by me! I have run 5 marathons, but felt so beat up after all of them that it is hard for me to wrap my head around doing it after 2.4 swim, 112 bike.  On the plus side, I do a ton of walking as it is basically the way I commute to work, etc.

Good luck at camp Jon... I was supposed to be there but couldn't make it due to family stuff.

Good luck to any racers this weekend

Rusty, thanks for the awesome pic!

RJohnson1979 - 2011-05-20 12:47 PM Has anyone ever ridden the Keene descent backwards and what was it like?

Now that would just be showing off! Laughing

Bike Riding Backwards

TankBoy,

I had a good laugh at this. RJohnson I've often wondered the same thing. When I first looked at the bike profile for LP I thought it would be easier to ride it reverse... and then I actually rode the Keene Descent and changed my mind.

Hope everyone has a great weekend of training. Down about 20 lbs. as well, hoping to lose another 15 before the race. Don't want to carry any extra weight on the 24th.

I wish my clothes were falling off of me. Nope. Studying has not equaled healthy lifestyle choices food wise over the past say...2 months...haha. Luckily for me I'm training for an IM...so it's not like I've gained weight...haha

I might switch around my weekend a bit. Monday is Victoria Day up here, so it is a stat (even though I have a study date with two friends to practice physical exam)...So I might do Monday's recovery tomorrow, long ride/T run on Sun and run on Mon. I'm kind of craving a chill day to myself tomorrow before the week of 3 finals starts. And by chill day I mean study day..7 MORE DAYS TILL SCHOOL IS DONE....(I'm not counting down at all...noo...)

How do you deal with bad training weeks?

This last week for me has been terrible, not in the actually training itself(which has been feeling great) but in the amount of training I've been able to do.

Due to work and personal issues I've had to cancel almost half of my workouts this week. Hopefully it looks like next week things should get back to normal.

Should I be worried about one bad week? Or just have faith that I'm doing enough training and one 'cutback' week won't have any major affect on my training?

I wouldn't worry too much about one week. Life happens and sometimes our non-tri life takes over. I don't know exactly what your training volume has been for the past little while but I think you should just have faith that you are doing enough training. I've definately had a few weeks over the past months that ended up getting sloughed off due to school and personal life stuff--all you can really do is focus forward on the next 8 weeks and make them count!

Anyone still looking for a place to stay?

Long story short: I'm looking at a condo about 2 miles from transition and want to go in on w/other people to offset the cost.  Looking at Wednesday-Wednesday, place sleeps 6-8 and can be found on link below.  It's the third from top listed under Featured Rentals:

http://www.bonnielmorrisrealty.com/featured-rental.php

Anyone interested PM so we can work something out.

Good luck everyone w/training and racing this weekend.  I can't believe how quickly this race is coming up! I remember wishing it was closer to race day for the longest time, now I'm starting to wish it was the other way around.

I wouldn't worry so much about it if I were you.  Last weekend I tried training in the freezing rain, essentially got sick from attempting to do so and had to trash my entire weekend and into this week.  It happens.  More likely than not you could finish IMLP right now with all you've done.  Also, on this topic, I've read a million times over about pros commenting on this same topic and every single one of them gives the same advice about embracing it and knowing that you're just recovering more... which is never a bad thing.

I believe the quote goes something like: "You would much rather be under-trained than over-trained".

HarryMan update

I went with the 28 cassette and it earned me 2nd in my AG, top 20 overall. Final numbers are not up yet (and there was at least one DQ of an athlete ahead of me OA), but RD told my 2nd AG place was official and I got the hardware to prove it!!

Nice work! Always nice to come home with some hardware!

Probably a slightly stupid question: when you switched to your 28 cassette...did you change your chain too? Just wondering since I'll be switching my cassette next week whenever it arrives and I'm wondering if my chain will be big enough to handle the 28?

Awesome stuff bringing home the hardware!!!

mndymond... you should be OK switching out the cassette without any issues. Most of the time you would have to worry about chain length when changing your crankset. I'm glad I just went to a compact crank, as I hit the hills a little today. It was refreshing not having to crush the pedals to get up the steeper hills.

WOW!!  Congrats Brother!  20th OA on Harryman is unbeleivable!  Congrats!!  This has to make up for missing it last year.  Looking forward to the RR.

Nice job! How did the 28 work out? Did you ever need to get into that gear on that climb?

P.S. How did the athlete in front of you get DQ'ed? They cut the course?

Thanks gang!

I did use the 28 on the big hill and a couple of others. I may have been ok with a 26 or 27, but 25 would not have been enough.

The RD told me they guy that came in first overall had a 40 minute run so probably either lost count (2 loops) or just bailed at the start of the second loop.

Mindy; I do not have to change my chain for the 28.

Does anyone know where there are good places to stop to regroup/hydrate/pit stop when training on the bike course in Lake Placid?

Thanks!

Just past the turn from Jay to Wilmington is a gas station on the right that is full stocked with liquids. This is at the start of the out and back to Ausable Forks. You are basically half way done @ the turn @ Ausable Forks, so you can either refill at the start or end of the out and back and that should get you enough stuff for the 2nd half back.

There is also a Sunoco on the left at the intersection of Hazeleton road where you do the short out and back.

In town there are plenty of places to refill.

Just wrapped up the training camp here in Lake Placid. It was basically summer weather both days! (except for the first 2 hours of the first loop, it was rainy and foggy). I got a good sunburn on the arms.

I did the full 112 on Saturday. I mentally checked out @ 5 hours. Not fun! The last 15 mins of the bike my body suddenly "woke up" and I hammered it up the last 15 mins to Lake Placid. Then I did a quick 30 min run and my legs felt good! The heat and sun did a lot of damage to me. I am just not acclimated to this warm weather yet since it has been so rainy all spring.

Sunday was a 16 mile and 40 min easy spin. Legs felt great for the run. Just cruised.

I think the giant ice bath, aka, Mirror Lake, helped sooth my knees.

Hey guys! I had a really awesome long ride and transition run this morning! I think this is the first time I have actually felt capable of doing an IM.

Now I need to try and bring myself out of my post workout exhaustion to study....ugh. Haha.

Congratulations mrbbrad on the amazing race and to everyone else that had a great training weekend. I went on a group ride today to preview the bike course of the HIM I am doing in 2 weeks. One of the riders in the group had a pretty bad accident. Apparently he jerked his front wheel to the left (not sure if he hit gravel or was reaching for his water bottle or something) and went over his handlebars. His face hit the pavement hard. He lost some teeth and his face was a mess. Luckily he was wearing his road I.D. and the ambulance was able to get there very fast. 9 more weeks until IMLP, train safe.

Just got home from Lake Placid. Did 2 modified loops of the bike course(didn't do the out'n'back to Au Sable Forks).

Great day. Beautiful weather(high 60s/low 70s) very little wind, only time I noticed it was a tailwind from Keene to Jay on the second loop(the only part of the ride where my time on the second loop was quicker). The time difference might have also been due to having to replace a flat rear tire the first loop, though I did stop the Garmin for the change so not sure.

The first time climbing up to Lake Placid I was honestly surprised at how easy it seemed only a few points with larger grades. The second loop was a completely different story. Blew my self up quite nicely. Mixed too much Perpetuem and ended up with a solid block in my stomach at about the 60 mile point. Legs still felt good but felt pretty bad overall.

Did the climb at 15mph the first time, and 9.5 the second loop.

Still was a great day, even with the fueling mess up.

I do want to thank the 6 or so guys who passed me on the climb the second time, each of them slowed down and checked if I was OK. Guess I didn't look too good.

Thanks for the info Jon and nice work! Had you ridden the course before? Did anyone mention the actual water temp?

I did one loop of the bike last July when I volunteered. I will say that a North wind is the more desirable direction on race day. That way you get blown up through the notch instead of it beating you down. It was a South wind when I previewed it last July and it was so demoralizing getting beat down with that wind! Because of the North Wind yesterday, I was able to big ring it (compact crank) and stay conservative through the notch.

Water temp = COLD
