Thanks for the nutrition advice everyone! I am ordering my Gu products today; hopefully will have them in time to trial next Saturday.

The weather here has been pretty chilly too--but I way overdressed yesterday and had my warm jacket on, foot warmers, etc; overheated once the temp got above 55 (but we started at 38). My body always gets warm; my problem is my feet literally go numb in temps under 55 ish (I have tried to address this many times with shoes; fit; etc). I think I just have really poor peripheral circulation to my feet :-/ but it is NOT fun. Anyone else have this issue?

Get some of those foot warmer pads. I started out with them yesterday. I too, get cold toes. They stick right to your socks and work for me!

Happy Easter everyone! I am addict, I must admit... I can't get off my bike. All I want to do is ride, ride and ride.  I'm riding out to Easter lunch this afternoon and then hope to ride some more after lunch. I've had to take off some from running this week because my knee got bashed into the car dashboard last wknd and hasn't been right since. I think it's been getting better, but I'm bummed and so jealous of all the runners I keep passing. Just a few more days and I think I will be able to pound the pavement. I did my first Century of the season yesterday! What a great ride and I found some new hillzzzzzzzzz! How is everyone else's training been coming?? I'm ready to race! Maybe I'm still buzzed form the endorphins of yesterday. Going to the pool now!

I was prepping for my first century ride too but I didn't make it far.  I don't have any cold weather gear so about a mile into it my fingers were numb and I couldn't break or shift.  What does everybody do when the weather is supposed to fluctuate during your ride (Start off cold and then warming it up)?  I would have worn pants and long sleeves but then I would have probably had to take them off at some point, but then what do I do with it all?

I cheated. Started off with 45 minutes on the trainer, then used toe warmers and put pants and coat on. Half way through I had to come home to refill my bottles so I switched to shorts

AndyBU-I've had a similar experience.  I came from a very running background , I ran all through high school and most of college until an injury took me out and then really got into triathlon.  It took me a little while to get used to the difference between running and biking, and my one piece of advice is to use your heart rate monitor. Figure out your max heart rate on the bike (should be slightly different than run) and actually use it to figure out your bike intensities.

Hey all,

Looks like a portion of the bike course is getting resurfaced this spring. The ride back up from Wilmington and over the Bears should hopefully be a little smoother (though not any less hilly.

"A 12-mile section of Route 86 between Lake Placid and Wilmington will receive "pavement preservation treatment" this year at a cost of $3.5 million, according to a Tuesday press release from the governor's office."

http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/page/content.detail/id/530198/Sections-of-routes-86--30-will-be-repaved.html?nav=5008

Good luck to all of you in training and on race day.

Cool - this sounds like good news. That is of course unless "Pavement Preservation Treatment" is New York DOT-speak for "Chipseal."

My wife and I rented a cabin in Wilmington from the Sunday before the race to the Sunday after the race (making it a vacation as well). The cabin is about 16 miles from LP so any advice regarding what time to arrive race morning?  (I suspect routes into LP may be limited.

Hi Bill, they don't close the roads until something like 5:45 or 6AM. The exact time of road closures is posted at check in or in the race packet. If it's not posted, I always check with someone at the race site to find out the exact time. I have driven in four times on race morning from Upper Jay (a little farther than Wilmington) with zero issues.

So I am bumming right about now. The weekend before this one I ran a half mary and we piled in the Jeep to leave. I had to sit on someone's lap and the door was shut. My butt was sorta hanging out and the door pushed my butt in and my knee got smashed into the dash. Later it was bothering me. I did some light biking last week and I only ran 4 miles last week. I had a little bit of pain on the medial part when kneeling over the wknd, but that went away. It doesn't bother me to bike, but it kinda feels like I am overextending my leg when I stand. It just doesn't feel like the norm. A lady I work with asked if I was limping and she said I was walking slower than normal. It just feels wierd. I'm going to the PT tomorrow and will have them do some physical tests. I'm just bummed because I'm so ready to go, go go! If I have to walk this stinking marathon I will. I am so determined to get my finishers jacket I will let nothing stand in the way! My long bike didn't bother me at all this wknd so I hope I can at least keep up with that. Can I still be a "real" Ironwoman/man if I end up walking the entire race (I'm hoping this doesn't happen). I almost feel like it's a PCL issue. rghhhh!!! I'm so frustrated. Any words of wisdom or help to cheer me up?? I feel like crying right now or eating the rest of the dark chocolate rabbit in my fridge Sorry I needed to vent... my family would think I'm crazy if I told them what was going on. They would tell me to quit, so I feel like you guys are the next best thing.lol

Finish in the 17 hours and you are an Ironman....that is my goal.  Anything less than 17 hours for me is gravy!.  I suspect your knee will be fine..hang in there!

Get yourself some RICE. We are only halfway through the preparation. Don't get down. Think of it as an unexpected mid-training taper. Then come back slowly after getting some professional insight into what is happening. A base is hard earned and won't disappear on you ina week or two weeks time.Re finishing. If you can do it in 16:59:59, you have earned the moniker for life and into posterity. I don't think anyone will care if you walk backward. 140 miles is iron-tough. Keep us posted on what you learn, don't despair, and don't over due a strain.

Well, I do think I read a PubMed piece a while back that found dark chocolate bunnies to have a restorative effect on knee injuries. I just cannot remember if you are supposed to eat the chocolate or rub it on your knee.....?

No worries, Chantell - definitely get it checked out ASAP, but I will betcha you are going to be fine. LP is a long way away and you have a good base in the bank - that does not go away overnight. Just keep working on your swim and bike and do what your doc says about your knee - you are going to be an Ironman well before midnight on July 22!

One other thing I remembered. You'll want to plan out where you're going to park and leave enough time to get to transition. I typically shoot to get in the closest lot off of Old Military Rd and then take the shuttle.

Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement. I had one of those downer days yesterday!I think sometimes as athletes we all go through these highs and lows of training. Knee issues probably effect everyone sometime or another. I went to the PT today and they felt some lax between my MCL and LCL, however it didn't seem like they were too worried about it. The jolt at the dashboard probably didn't help things after the race so I guess I will take a few more rest days this week. The PT feels it is a tracking problem and they let me use this strap called the SERF strap. I could really tell a difference! I have ordered one from them and will use it for the next few weeks of training. It was amazing how much more stable I felt with this strap wrapped around my knee and it went up around my hips. It doesn't seem limiting either. It was $70, but think this will really work out for me. If anyone has knee issues you might want to check this out, it's made by DonJoy.

I took the last 2 days off for a medical problem. 1st 2 day break Ive had since before Christmas and my legs are feeling the best they have in awhile so I dont think it was a bad thing at all. I think my workout today is going to be fantastic.  I just switched from insulin injections to a pump yesterday and am hoping I can eat gu and powerbars without my sugar being 3x normal at the end of the race.

So I have 2 options for my tune up half ironman before IMLP. I can do a completely flat one on june 3rd just to cover the distance and practice nutrition, or I can do an extremely hilly and tough one where one of the major goals will be just to finish on May 20th(this is based on reputation and peoples race reports) I guess my question is, is it worth it to do the half with hills just to prepare for the hills in Lake Placid or should I take it a bit easier as I have never done a Half and so I can focus more on nutrition and race strategy?

I hate to say this, but only you can answer this question from a "what's best for you" perspective. My initial thought was to do the really tough one. Suffer in May and reap the benefits in July. Then I thought, if you have never done one, you might want to get one under your belt to feel more confident in your abilities come IMUSA. Focus on your race plan and nutrition and finish. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is which race is going to prepare you best for July and only you can answer that. It is kind of like asking what is the best nutrition plan for you. You can ask the question and you will get feedback, but you are a test study of one. What might be best for you might not be best for me. You need to make a decision and just go with it. I would argue that both races, no matter which one you pick, will help to prepare you for LP.

I went back and forth on this one as well. In the end I think I would race the flats and train the hills. It is a tough call though. IMO getting your nutrition down and pacing is key for the big daddy but so is nailing the confidence that you just finished a HIM, regardless of it being hills/flats, it is a great accomplishment.

From there you can train the hills and continue your nutrition planning. Just my 2 cents

By strategy I assume you mean pacing, which is key and FWIW the achilles heal of a lot of us AG'ers. I know it was my demise in my HIM last Sept which had me walking/jogging the last 6 miles. Pacing is discipline. Discipline to know you have a lot of race left and even though you feel good you need to keep your pace.

sorry for the tangent... my 2 cents just became 3

Hey I just noticed that you are signed up to do the Little Smokies one that I was thinking about doing. I am leaning more towards that one just because of the fact that it is earlier in the season and will have more time afterwards to fine tune things to prepare for IMLP. I am not doing the whole weekend though because of work(I just got a job and am graduating this May) so I will just be coming done for the Half on Sunday.
