A new race has just been announced that may have me doing 2 long course races next summer!  I would still like to do IMFL in 2013 but the new race is about 3 months earlier and it is a 20 minute drive from my house!

The are calling it a steel distance race as it is 140.8 miles vs. 140.6 and steel is harder than iron, like at that distance it matters! Should be fun and the venue is attactive!

Long weekend coming up!  Whos racing?

Posting FAIL:  Ahh Ken... you can't drop the bomb on a *NEW RACE* and not post the actual details!!!!

We need a Link... a Bike Course Elevation Map or Something!!!!

You are right Carla, my bad!! I will do extra pushups as a penalty!

Here is the link Peasantman Tri

Good news is, the swim is flat!

KenJ - It's a good thing the Swim is Flat!!!  That hill at mile 9 on the bike looks like a "WALL!" !!!

Hello All,

I hope everyone had a great long weekend.

I completed a 2.4 mile ows on Saturday which is encouraging considering IMFL is two months away and the longest distance I had swam since IMAZ had been 1.5.   Carla and I went out for a long run on Sunday. She did great and I fell apart. Yesterday my coach videotaped my running. Interesting to look at. Carla also joined us for a short ride and then we spent some time working on my nutrition plan for FL. I have never really had a solid nutrition plan so it will be interesting to see how this works out.

So a busy weekend and another one coming up with volunteering at IMWI. My coach has a "rest" day written in on Sunday. I joked with her about that since volunteering and being at an IM all day is really tough!  I am doing body marking at 4:45 am if that gives you an idea of how early my day will start.

Meulen - 2012-09-02 6:50 PM Glad the 5k went well Ken!

Yes, I started with him right away. I mentioned possibly putting together a basic plan for the winter and re-visiting more personal training in the spring. Ultimately, he left the decision up to me. So, sitting there up 10lbs already from Racine injured unmotivated and with lofty goals I felt it was best to start right away.

Being I was doing the first 2 weeks of Jorge's, I was well set up to do his testing next week. So he started giving me workouts already and I will be testing next week on the bike. Since I'm cleared for swimming he's giving me swim workouts too. As soon as I can run again we are going to start building that too.

Sounds like a good start Brian!

I had a pretty good long weekend with a long run Sunday and a little bit of a ride yesterday.

Everyone else have a good weekend?

Overall it was good. I struggled a little on my run on Saturday but hit my goal on Sunday on the bike. I just have 2 more weeks to build a little more endurance then I start my taper.

Yesterday we spent the day at the water park I could have squeezed in a run but I've been spending so much training that I thought I should spend the day with the family and help my wife get ready for the day.

Also anyone else struggling w/ the lack of daylight hours in the morning? Tomorrow the kids start school so that adds in another time constraint for me. In some ways it's nice having a tri so late in the season but this week and next are always a struggle for me to get the training in. I hate riding my bike in the dark but it seems I end up having to do it a couple times.

Ah the summer is over!

Ah the summer is over!

I didn't even notice daylight hours fading!   Honestly, I'm at work before it gets light.  If I ride when it's dark out it's always on the trainer.  After a close call in the dark I hung up my bike lights and stay inside, even in the summer.

Weekend was great!  Started working with the coach.  He's got me cycling a lot to make up for not running.  So no more slacking off I guess! LOL   Starting back on the swim tonight.  Had some time this weekend to get some stuff done, spend some time with my wife, and have my parents over for a bbq.  I got my dad running this summer, and now he wants to try a triathlon!  He's lost 20+ lbs recently and is soooooo happy!  Feels good to be a part of that!   I set a bike up for him and sent him home with it to train on.  So one less bike in my stable now! LOL We also got him signed up for a sprint tri next summer

Great job completing the swim Kathleen!!

I am interested to know what you and your coach learned with the video taping of the run.

No, volunteering all day at IMWI is anything but a rest day!  I am looking forward to returning to racing because volunteering is a lot more work!

Sounds like a great weekend Adam, and missing a day of training to spend some quality time with the family is well worth the trade off!!

The later sunrise does give me a little bit of an issue in the morning, mostly due to the runs being longer than I can get in from home so I have to drive into town to run under the street lights until the sun comes up.   I do enjoy running with the sun rising and watching as people start to come out for the day!

Hey all.  Sounds like you are all training hard.  I'm doing well.  Doing long endurance rides now on Sundays.  3 hours in the rain Sunday with an hour on the CT to finish off.  I couldn't make the 80% he wanted outside without fear of sliding out so I finished indoors and got the intensity he wanted at the end.  Racing bikes tonight again, 25 miles, then a brick run.  I did 21.6 mph last week on the course, so that is coming along fine.  The new bike is awesome.

Swims have dropped times to the 1:45ish mark.  Better than that with a wet suit last week at the last openwater practice of the year.

Headed to Madison on Friday night.  Volunteer meeting on Saturday morning.  Then a run and maybe open water swim if they are letting any old body use the lake.  Signing up for 2013 on Monday.  Then Branson on 9/23.  Should do OK but I have not seen the bike course.  Heard the descents reach 50.  All free speed. Course getting up the other side will be an issue, but hell, ought to be fine.  Run is going well too.  I am running bricks, even just short ones, off every bike now. Racing the bike tonight, brick run, then the bike goes to the LBS to be tuned and to get upgraded shifters to SRAM Red.  I'll have enough time to practice with them before taper.

To anyone at Madison, phone is 309-275-7120.

Got back to the pool last night.  It felt pretty good.  Shoulder starting getting noticeable at about 1500m's but way better than it has been.  Speed actually seemed ok too.  My 50's weren't much slower than where I left off.  Let's hope I can start running again soon!

Coach is really ramping up my bike volume.  Halfway through the week I'm already at more volume than I've been in a while!  Like I said "no more slacking!" LOL  I got some sprint testing tonight and tomorrow I've got FTP testing before a rest day on Fri.  He said I'd NEED the rest day, even though I mentioned I rarely take them. I'm starting to see whey!!!LOL!

Welcome to the weekend!

I know we have 2 heading to Wisconsin to volunteer for IMWI next year, good luck and have fun Kathleen and Ice.

I have my first and last tri of the season on Sunday.  It is a sprint and I stayed in since I knew I could walk the entire swim if needed but the plan is to side stroke it and see how many I can pass on the bike and run.  The water is very shallow this year so I am not sure that I will be at much of a disadvantage.

Anyone else racing?

That sounds like a solid plan for a fun time on the sprint. Just don't let the competitive voice in the back of your head convince you to do anything rash during the swim :-)

I am racing the Croton, NY Half on Sunday. The Toughman Tri (who comes up with these cheesy names?). Its my tuneup race for IMAZ. The bike only has one real climb, but you do it twice, so I should be able to get a good Idea of pacing. In normal training I have about zero opportunities to figure out my long race pace. This course is supposed to have a hell of a run, but that's fine. Running is more my thing and I plan on having a very laid back swim and bike.

Have a great weekend!

I side stroked my first ever tri. I also thought about heading to shore at each buoy and going home. Ah what a difference 4 years can make...

Careful Ken!  Don't give in to temptation and do something you'll regret!

Good luck Bill!

Have fun in Madison Kathleen and Ice!  Hit me up if you stop in Chicagoland!  I'm 5 minutes off I55 and Weber rd!

OMG!!  Toughest week I've had in a while.  Coach had me riding 6 days straight.  These last two days started with sprint testing and yesterday ended with FTP testing.  I've never tested like this.  Usually, in computrainer classes, they've had me come in fresh from a couple days off and do a short warmup before a 20 minute TT.  Wednesday coach had me spend 1 1/2 hours on the trainer doing sprint testing!  Last night, he had me do a 3/5/and 8 minute TT before having me do a 20 minute all out TT for the FTP test!!!!!!  Needless to say my numbers were lower than the previous version testing, which was really a Critical Power #.  I think this was designed to more accurately predict a real FTP #.  Last year my 20min TT power #, or CP, ended the winter at 256 and climbed up near 290 by Racine and Naperville.  My number last night was 225!!!  Coach said my 20min TT was the smoothest he's EVER seen.  My normalized power was extremely tight and I had a solid build over the TT, and final surge.  So I was happy about that.  But, being a numbers geek, it's going to be hard to work with lower numbers mentally.  Not that I'm less strong than I was before in any way, infact quite the opposite.  But just different!

I'm excited for the weekend!  Going to talk to my PT to see if I can start some Kettle bell trianing and get back to running again!  Hopefully, he says SOON!!!

One downer though, is my coach isn't very optimistic about me doing a full IM this year.  He wants me to wait 6 months to see how I bounce back from the injuries before committing.  That leaves me with only one choice if it happens, and that's Louisville.  I did already sign up for Muncie 70.3, and am considering adding Kansas as well.  If not I'm going to make the move into doing some Xterra's.  My first real outdoor tri was an Xterra and I kinda miss it!  My coach won his Regional Xterra Series AG this year and has offered to help me out with my tech skills to keep me from getting injured so much out there on the MTB!

TGIF!!

Good luck and have a great race Bill!

You are right on the tri name thing!

One of my PT's is in the wave after me, he'll keep me in line!

Interesting protocol for testing, but sounds like he knows what he is doing.  You'll probably struggle with the same thing I will if I coach up, trusting them when you are doing things that are different to what you are used to.

I am also curious on the doubts about IM training.  Sounds like your shoulder is all but ready to go, I guess with the remaining question on the PF might be his thinking?

Great work this week!

Yeah, it's the PF.  I kinda get it.  He didn't rule it out completely, but he doesn't know me as an athlete very well yet.  He just said to wait 6 months and see how I bounce back from the PF.  He doesn't want to make any promises in case if flares up again.

I'm stopping in for a little horn tooting, because today everything is coming up Billy.

1) Raced today's HIM in 5:42 (I'll post a RR when official splits are out there) with a 1:50 run!  It wasn't too long ago that I would have been very happy with a 1:50 standalone HM.

2) Eileen took the kiddies to an amusement park today, so I'm relaxing with a giant glass of wine, about to take a nap :-)

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Great job Bill!  From what you said about that course, your run split is impressive!!

Enjoy the wine and nap!!
