Question for the group.  My wife got me a beginner road bike for valentines day and im looking for a cycling computer.  Any recommendations?

I like to use my wrist Garmin 910XT for sbr. I just put it on my wrist (flipped to the inside) on the bike instead of getting a separate bike computer. It does speed/cadence from my Ant+ sensors on the bike.

Had the Sam Adams New world at 10% tonight.  This may qualify for my first fruit beer?  This thing was good.  4 out of 5.

My goals for the week

  • 3 x run
  • 2 x strenght
  • Polar Plunge at noon today
  • Did not weigh myself and ate healthy

It was a good week, I think the key for me this week was I have been getting up between 4:30-5 for 3 weeks now (most days) and this morning I was going to sleep in (6am), and I was awake at 5 so I went and finished my run. I think that I have turned the corner of being a morning person. The person I lift weights with (who is morning person) texts me every morning we work out to make me get my butt out of bed, I did not even curse his name like I normally do!

Thor I have to agree with you on the portion control. I have to be better at writing what I eat down. I was doing the paleo diet, but I have a problem (I work on hearts for my job) with the thought process of eggs and bacon in the morning, Meat and salad for lunch , and meat and veg or salad for supper. When the longest living people in the world are eating a plant slant and whole grain, and barely any portions of meat in the month. What is everyones thoughts on that?

Good job everyone on their workouts for the week. One of my goals next week is to be part of the forum more.

Ian

I have a Garmin FR70 watch and a Garmin Edge 500.  The cool thing is that they both pair with the Garmin Speed and Cadence sensor (and trainer road), so the watch is pretty much one-stop shopping.  The Edge I have mostly for the GPS, which will be great when I can finally get outside to ride.  The only downside of the FR70 is it lacks GPS capability, but the heart rate sensor and all the other bells and whistles, plus the fact that it's significantly cheaper than the 305 or 310, make it great.  I have the foot pod for running, which (compared to a GPS app on my phone) is within about 2% accuracy against the GPS.

One day until rest day, yay.  Just finished Trainer Road Perkins, for a nice, leisurely 2 hour burn.  Yesterday was a lightning fast (for me) 2,000 yards in the pool, plus a tempo 10k at 54:51 (demolished my old record of 1:04:50).  I'll be happier when my tempo pace starts with an 8 instead of a 9, but it's a matter of when at this point, not if.

Also, this morning's weigh-in put me at my pre-holiday weight, so it's all progress from here.

First off, good job on the workouts!

my thoughts are we are on this earth for a short time so enjoy the things you love. I think in excess anything will shorten your life. I live beef/chicken/pork/fish etc. Just have to have balance in your life. You can die from drinking too much water...everything in moderation! Speaking of which, I have to go to the liquor store to grab a beer.... Laughing

WTB new knees.  It is real nice outside right now, perfect for a run.  To top it off a friend called and asked if I was available for a nice Sanibel to Captiva island ride in the morning.  Needless to say no I'm not Cry

They do feel a bit better though and like I said I am sticking to the pool until March 1st to be extra safe.  One positive is I am drinking my first Chimay ever and....god love those crazy beer making monks!

Good morning everyone, hope you all have a great Sunday and get some training in!  I have a question regarding shoes.  How many miles should your running shoes last? My current pair of Saucony Progrid 5 have about 150 miles on them.  They seem to still be in good condition, just curious how many miles most people get out of their shoes.

Seems like I've read a few times that 500 miles is max.  If I'm doing a lot of distance, and my shoes are over 300 miles, and my legs or feet start to injure, then it's time to change my shoes.  Listen to your body.  If your not doing a ton of distance, you can probably push it out a little further to the 500 mile marker.

Got my 16 miler in today.  I didn't walk, but did run a very slow pace that allowed me to complete the run jogging.  My goal for this May's marathon is not impossible, but is slowly becoming more increasingly difficult at attaining.  After my run right now, my hip feels like an elderly gentlemen's hip after falling and breaking pelvis.  Liberal amounts of Ibuprofen should help to take off the edge.

This week I was able to meet my goals.  Next week, I'm looking at upping to 38-40 mpw, and maintaining my 16 mile long run, but shave 10 minutes off of the total time it takes to run.

Tonight, I have 5 tasty beverages to choose from, I'm going to put one in the fridge now so it's chilled this evening.

A bit quiet on the board beer drinkers.  Hope everyone's meeting their goals while dealing with the adversity's of life.  Keep at it.

Prost!

Here is a link to my equipment tracker

Highest to lowest in km

1263

769 (I just got these hokas in November, love them shoes)

Then there are another 10+ pairs.

One of my favorite stories of shoes comes from Born to Run where they are talking about the guy who is trying to figure out how long he can run in his shoes for.  So he runs in them until they fall apart on one side.  Then he starts wearing them on the wrong feet.  Anyways... I find the best way to tell is have other newer shoes.  So if you feel like you need a new pair, buy one.  Then you will know if you really did.  I find there comes a time, about 1400km, where I don't really like to wear the shoes for more than 10km.

Thanks Darren and Kevin!  Like I say, the Sauconys I have are still working great, just more curiosity than anything.  I tried the equipment tracker on here, but didn't really care for it.  Thanks again for the advice.

What i have learned in my  nutrition class;

"Maltose: Comprised of glucose joined with glucose, maltose is formed during starch digestion.  Maltose is not found in many foods, but the enzymatic breakdown of starches into maltose is an important sep in the production of beer."

Lets hear it for Maltose!

Cold and windy run today..suppose to be an hour and a half but I only managed half an hour.  Really really considering restarting the plan.  The new meds I am on are kicking my bootie!  One does not allow my heart rate to get up...I have a resting heart rate of 42.  Eating is a little better but the GI issues are occurring every other day.  I have been adding a lot more veggies into my diet and I am almost down to what I was pre holiday season.  Two more pounds to go and then I start all over again.

Can I get away with a pair of shorts along the 2XU Active Tri Shorts price range for a sprint distance or am I going to hate the bike portion?  I found them for 32 bucks and that is awful tempting after seeing some of the prices but I want to make sure I won't regret the purchase.
