Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Pete99 Hey All- Busy week. Can only check in when I can. Finally made it to spring break, but not much spring here in Michigan yet. Off to do my first race of the season bright and early tomorrow. It's a 10K about 1 hour from where I live. I'll also pick up a bike trainer from a friend on the way back. Hoping to get some more training in before school picks back up and the crunch of finals arrive faster than I realize. Keep on plugging away everyone. It'll help for us northerners when the snow goes away!! Pete Good luck tomorrow Pete! I hope you crush it! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Grr... Frustrated with myself. It's been a busy day and I haven't been able to get my workout in today and didn't get my workout in yesterday. I need to make it my mission to get my workouts in first thing in the morning.... It's not like I'm purposefully blowing off my workouts but my busy days are not making it easy. Vet appointment, trip to buy a new cell phone for my wife, and a birthday party for my son... What's frustrating is that my life has been just as busy in the past, but I've still done the work.... Tomorrow for sure! |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Check-in: 6/? for the week. I did 1600 in the pool today. Boy it sure does stink when you're in the pool and you think you're having a decent workout....then an obvious triathlete hops in the lane next to you and proceeds to blow your doors off and makes it look so easy. He was either swimming or staring at his Garmin like a robot. He was a machine. It's not like I don't know I have more work to do in the pool, I just would have rather not been reminded of it today. I'll just keep telling myself that he's training for a HIM or something so I feel better. Plank Challenge: I'm still alive and still doing it. DQ I hear you with the family schedule. I am daddy taxi this weekend. 2 sleep over birthday parties, 1 sleep over that's not a party, & 1 dropoff and pickup at the mall to see a movie. It sure does make it hard to get the workouts in. |

Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Swimming mojo where are you...oh well after a tough week of lack of swim/run I rebounded thanks to my son. My wife and daughter (girls weekend)are at a outdoor hockey tournament(on a lake) in Lac la biche, AB. Me and my son are hanging out this weekend.(i coach both but it is his turn this weekend). After his hockey game we hit the cycle trainers then an outdoor run. Ended with a hot tub at rec centre. Now we are making bacon cheeseburgers having a beer(ginger ale cranberry for him :-) ) Love being able to participate with my children! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Finding my mojo update: After posting my last update about missing out on a workout - I decided to do something about it. The reason for postponing my ride was because the sun was going down, so I asked my kids for their help in getting me out the door in less than ten minutes. I made a game out of it and they all chipped in to fill up my water bottle, fill up my tires, and find my gloves so I could leave ASAP. 10 minutes later I was out the door and even though it was full dark when I got back, I got the ride in During my ride, I got to thinking about it and I made this realization - I'm thinking and preparing like I did when I was going long and that way of doing things isn't helping. While it was necessary when I was riding for 8 hours to make sure everything was all set, which is daunting and time consuming, I need to relearn the art of just getting out the door. Hoping to grab a swim and some aqua jogging which will make 5 workouts for the week. Thanks everyone! |

What about trying to incorporate ride prep into your regular routine. fill up some bottles in the morning while making kid's lunch (or whatever you parents do :P) and put them in the fridge. Put whatever gels you'll take in the fridge next to them at the same time. In the evening when it's ride time just grab and go. I keep a duffle bag of all my cycling gear near the door so I can just grab my helmet, shoes, gloves, glasses, arm bands, extra layers, etc. as I'n heading out the door. |

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I burned so many calories today that I have enough for a 6 pack of beer. I picked up a case of Muskoka IPA samplers. Three different IPAs of varying hoppiness. I don't drink much anymore, and with the big workout I'm barely through one bottle and already feeling buzzed. Going to be a good night. haha. Cheers, everyone. Here's some motivation from my favourite cyclist of all time. This guy once crashed his bike at the Tour de France, grabbed a children's bike and caught the peloton. |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Nice job on the workout! I'm only at 4 so need a double tomorrow! I agree with Alan on having stuff ready to go. We have some awesome shelves my husband built in the garage with room for cyclin shoes, gloves, helmets, camelbacks, gels etc. it's so nice to have everything in a arms length of the door! I also wait too much for perfect conditions. I've been trying really hard to not let forgetting socks stop me from working out. |

I have been truing to incorporate these steps as well. Sunday is spent prep' ing for the week. I cook five meals and freeze them for the crock pot. Have all my work out clothes in my bag and swim stuff as well. The thing is I am packing a lot a crap around with me now and my car looks like I am living in it and I STILL miss a workout if the slightest thing goes awry. Keep trying different things and find what works for you. It's there you just need to find it. |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business This week was ok, lost my Garmin but it was in the car, Whew...from my previous message, I am practically living in my car these days. Got a short swim in today. The only pool open in town was at the base put it was only for open swim. They have these two huge inflatable play/climbing things for the kids but no lanes roped off. The thing about the base, this time of year, is that it isn't too crowded. There is about 5 feet of space between the gianormous floaty things and I made that my lane. Yeah there were kids in it but it was good sighting practice. I don't know what that yoga instructor did to us this week but I am still sore along my core...a good sore. Unplanned trip to the happiest place on Earth this week..flying by the seat of my pants as usual. Can't wait to get a run in at Huntington Beach! |

20 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Well, the first race of the year is in the books, an 11.7 mile time trial in northern Colorado. I managed just a hair under 20 mph with a 20+ mph headwind outbound and a mostly uphill return leg. Said result put me 19th out of 21 in my lowest of the low category. I can live with that. This was more about testing myself than trying to get a high placing. And besides, there are some seriously freaking fast people here. I did realize that I've got to spend more time in the aerobars. My hamstrings were killing me. I also learned that TT's in this area with lots of wind involve dodging tumbleweeds as well as trying not to vomit on your top tube. On the plus side, I finally broke down and joined my local mountain bike club a few nights ago, and not just because the meeting was at New Belgium Brewing and the beer was free. Really, I swear. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Thanks for the thoughts on getting out the door. To keep things organized, I've put all my things into a shelving unit in a room farthest away from the front door. sticking a beg by the door Ala alan would real help. Today I'm taking my kids to a thing called PAX - it's like a convention for DD, video games, comics, everything that kids things are cool and alternative... anyway, wasn't able to get in my workout this morning.... I know I need to cut myself some slack - but it just seems counter intuitive. The drive that I have has really helped me - but now it's just tripping me up. With my wife going out of town for 10 days (it's her school vacation) I need to come to grips with the fact that I'm gonna miss some workouts and just find a way to be ok with that. |

With our "little group" growing by the day, let's make it our goal this week to try to get to know each other a bit better. Please post a picture to the forum showing yourself doing something you love (like Jen and her Black and Tan). It could be a picture from the past or present - just post something that you want people to know about you. If it would help you - please consider posting your goals for the week so people can help support you. Don't forget to leave inspires for people - they pack a lot of power! Another huge thanks to David O for working on the shirts! While it's just a bigger version of my avatar it does accurately represent my two favourite things: cycling and Star Trek. I'm a huge trekkie. My house, much to my wife's dismay, is littered with Star Trek stuff (from a Spock oven mitt to a huge pastel painting of the Enterprise). I'm also a classicist (greek and roman history and language) and will be finishing my MA in Classics this April. Currently live in London, ON, CA but will be back in Ottawa, where my wife currently lives already, in June. I also run a racing blog (link below) and I'm hoping after I'm done my MA to earn my keep by writing for a cycling magazine. I have a dream to make it to the Canadian national cycling team.
Goals for the Week: I'm coming up to my rest week this week after the first 'build' period, which means power tests this week. So my goal is to hit PBs on my short duration power outputs. (5second, 30second, 1min, 5min) and I'm hoping to see a little improvement in my FTP. It's sitting at 278watts right now. I'd like it to be 300 by the end of May for the Amateur World Championship qualifiers. I also need to lose 0.5kg this week. That's what the trainer is for. Que up something harsh like Sufferfest Revolver or Angels, wring a gallon of sweat out of your body, and call it good. A two hour ride might not be in the cards, but finding an hour on the trainer is very do-able. Trainer Road is the best $10 I spend each month. |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Check-in: 7 for the week. I really needed to get out there in the real world and run in fresh air. Today was 8.32 because I was bad at math today and turned late...I was shooting for an 8 mi run. It's official folks, I feel spring now. 44 degrees for the run and I could have done it in shorts if I wanted to deal with the first 1.5 miles. That makes me 51 for the year, this is WAY more than I've ever done in the past, so thanks for the motivation everyone. Goals for the week: Run: Since I'm planning another long run on the weekend, sprint intervals are going to be on the menu for Tuesday and Thursday. Swim: My swims this week will focus on breathing on both sides. I've always been a left breather and I know that sometimes the marker buoys are on the right. Bike: I'm just planning to keep the legs muscles honest and providing a minor workout. We'll have no slackers around here. As for the pic, this is from after the run. I almost forgot and my running partner left. I had to do the selfie thing that I make fun of the kids for doing. What do I love about it? Spring is coming.... [/QUOTE} That's so cool I've never done a TT- don't even know if there are any around here. It sounds like the competition was fierce. It used to frustrate me that I could sometimes be in the top 20% at 5ks but BOP at half-marathons- but a runner friend pointed out that tons of people show up for 5ks, but you have to be serious to do a HM. I'm sure something similar is at work in TTs. |

Veteran 732 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Did my long run (16 miles) for the week. The weather was nice and roads and trails were 90% clear, but what wasn't clear was ice. My Garmin (105) died about 5 miles in, which was frustrating. I was at 75% battery when I left the house, so I hope it's an anomaly and doesn't mean it's going bad. Fortunately I had my phone with me and could use map my run to track my mileage. QUESTION: Any advice on how to stay motivated to finish strong on long runs? My previous long runs, I've been hurting by the end, but this week it wasn't any particular pain, I was just sick of running. I would take a short walk break... then keep walking... and then it was a huge mental struggle to finish. Same thing at the HM last weekend. Granted, conditions were terrible, but the last 3 miles I did a ridiculously slow walk/ shuffle that physically, I don't think I needed to. What can I do to get myself to not give up? |

I'm sure something similar is at work in TTs. I find that with running events there is a larger spread of abilities. You have people crossing the finish line of a running event basically every minute or so. At cycling events you either have the guys who live and breathe cycling and obsess over their numbers and training plans and their gear and what not and then there are 'normal' people who train and enjoy riding bikes and what not but aren't batsh*t crazy obsessive about making sure their watts per kg are spot on come race day. I happen to be part of the bath*t crazy crowd. I highly recommend it if you can but be prepared to become an incredible annoyance to everyone around you.. lol. |
