Ok, so my winter project is going to be building up a tri bike.  If my kids wern't both in pre-school and required a sitter after school I could afford a whole bike at one time but it will be a few years before they are both in kindergarten (woo hoo!)

The plan is to buy a new frame and then pick up all my parts from here, ST, E-Bay, Craigslist, etc.

Here is the frame I think I am going to get.  Any thoughts on color, looking at the black or blue

so ..... I can't afford a tribike just now and thought I might just look at changing the gearing on my old road bike. Any thoughts, suggestions, advice?

LoL, you would have to put up some serious bike splits to ride a pink bike as a guy.

What gearing are you running on your current bike?

I am liking my compact cranks on my road bike.

Just a thought on bike color. Mine is black and looks cool. However, I realized after I had purchased it, that it is not the most visible bike for cars to see. I, however, live in an area where the wite line on the right side of the road is the bike lane, like all 4 inches of it, well most of the time, sometimes it is broken up and such. I also realize that from the back, there really isn't much paint that they would be seeing so it is only the intersections that would really make you more visible with brighter colors. Ramble ramble.... looks around for some morning coffee.

I have six gears on the rear sprocket and two on the front. I don't know what the make is.

I am a big fan of the Black... I have seen that bike before and it looks SWEET!!! I was looking at the white one as well!  That might be pretty sweet... White, Black Components, White Bar tape?!  If you have any questions about building the bike.  That is what I just finished.... I bought everything off ST, EBAY, CRAIGLIST, and a place called PROBIKE (THEY ROCK-FREE SHIPPING).. It all comes down the the wheels....

Have PBK open in another window right now, they don't always have everything in stock and right now the exchange rate sucks but they are still cheaper than most places.

My road bike is black with white bar tape.

I am also debating on seeing how much a custom paint job would be.

On a completely different note... the importance of splitting the long bike and long run up? Daylight is sucking more and more these days. If I do a 1 hour bike or run after work I am pushing twilight to get home near full dark. Long bike is 4 hours plus which means Saturday. Long run is 2.5 hours + which means well it fits nicely into Sunday, but not into anything other than Friday or Sunday. Last week was 70 mile bike Saturday and 14 mile run Sunday. This week will be probably 75 and 15 and longer the following week.

I was reading that some fokls try to move the long run to Wed so they are gtg for the long bike rides. But, I have no idea how I would fit a 2-3 hour run in on a weekday. I guess I just need to win the lottery or something. If I tried to go Friday and Sunday, then Saturday would be a day off when it is the best day to do a long workout and I would be pushing twilight after church on Sunday. Sigh wtb more hours in the day.

Anyone have any solutions to this in their creative schedule making?

Are you doing rides and runs of this length every week?

Everything I have read says don't split up runs, doesn't give you the same effect as one long continuous run.

During the week I do tempo and speed runs, swimming of all distances, hill repeats or trainer type work and on the weekend I schedule the longer runs and rides.

It is vital for your body, and proper recover to splits these up... Run with a headlamp or find a treadmill in the middle of the week.  You can also split up your long run (some before work, some after, although....I find not a beneficial)...

I did it this weekend (back to back long workouts), and haven't felt good since.  I didn't even feel good on my ride.  Let your body recover!  I DID workout like that this weekend, 1) Because I am not training for anything in particular, I knew I could take some day(s) off after.  2) It's the weekend, what else am I going to do?  Watch my crappy football get crushed again?!  NO WAY!

Ya I typically do a 50 + mile bike ride a week and a 13 + mile run per week. I am trying to build in both areas with hopefully a Full Mary in January. I wouldn't split up the long run, kinda defeats the purpose in my book anyway.

The thought of doing my long run on the treadmill though makes me sad and we have no sidewalks (or shoulders of the road) or streetlamps so headlamp running is not so good. I have about a 6 to 12 inch area next to the pavement that has lots of dead spiky plants growing in it to run on 8).

Oh well I will work something out, was just looking for the confirmation that splitting those long workouts is way important..

You just need to move, I think that is the best answerLaughing

Another vote for split them up.  Definitely tough this time of year, but you don't want to injure yourself with them back to back.

I know my bike is black, but if that blue bike stands out as much as it looks in the picture, that would be my choice!  That looks excellent!

Good luck building that.  You have the benefit now of the off season to take your time and learn as you're doing it.  Sounds fun, and will definitely be a great accomplishment!

I am using a couple wheels... For the Cervelo, I have Easton Vista on there... Race w/ the Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL Premium ...  On the Xlab (tri bike) I am running Shimano's WH-7700, and hopefully will be racing w/ a set of Zipp 606's.... But may just switch over to the Mavic...

Difference is.. Cervelo is Campy settings, and Xlab is Shimano, so I have to change the cogs, etc...

I have the same Easton Vista wheels on my P2SL.  I was wondering about upgrading them for races next year, but I won't get anything like the Zipps ($$$).  Do you notice a big difference when you put the Mavics on?  I was thinking of wheels like those or the Easton EA90.

I was thinking about these.

With a wheelbuilder cover on the rear wheel.

Putting Michelin PR3's on them, I have them on my current bike and they make a noticeable difference.

So, who allready has 2009 mapped out for training and races?

So far I have Shamrock 1/2 marathon planned for march and Marine Corps Marathon in October, though recently I have been debating just doing the Shamrock full marathon to get the running training out of the way over the winter and focusing on Tri's over the Summer and having a real off-season this year where I can focus on losing weight and building a stronger base.

Last year I just kept doing the same 12 week Sprint - > Olympic plan which I found to be more volume than most of the pure Olympic plans here.

For 2009 I plan on spacing out races I will do as A races so I can get in the right kind of training instead of this year where I just had random races sprinkled throughout the year .  So far I have Mooseman Int'l scheduled which is just about 12 weeks after my 1/2 marathon.

My wife wants to do a 1/2 but I am not sure if I will be ready for that next year.  We train and plan differently, she signs up for races she can't quite do when she signs up to give her motivation to be ready for them, me I like to know I am 100% prepared before I sign up.

Tony, what no Savageman????    I am the same as your wife,  I like to pick my challenges and then train for them.

I want to do a half marathon this winter/spring as motivation for my run training and the Shamrock has been recommended to me.  Have you done that one before?  What is it like?

I am thinking a half mary this winter/spring, then my favorite sprints, the Army 10 miler again, Savageman (my hubby is dying to improve his time) and a half in there somewhere.  I would love to do the Kansas 70.3 since it is back home with my family, but there is potential scheduling problems.  To do both a half mary and half iron I need to be inspired by the location. Those are hard distances and  I don't want to race them JUST because of the distance.  BUT I WILL RACE THEM SOMEHOW BECAUSE OF THE DISTANCES.  Does that make sense?

Shamrock is alot of fun, it is during St. Patricks day so lots of drinking involved after the mary.  Plus it is pancake flat.

I am a wuss so probably no savageman for me...

I'm planning on a sprint in May and June.  Don't know where yet - possibly April as well.  I'll do the Pittsburgh Olympic on 7/19 - registering today.  Already registered for the Morgantown, WV HIM on 8/9 (that will be my first HIM).  Planning on the Akron Tri in early Sep - don't know the date yet, and not sure if I'll do the Sprint or Olympic.

Also planning on SAVAGEMAN!  Not sure if I'll do the Olympic or HIM for that.  I watched some YouTube videos of it, and I don't think I saw one tri-bike go up The Hill.  So that has me concerned about doing the HIM there.

I'm kind of annoyed that the early bird registration is already happening in many cases - or already over.  I completely missed Eagleman before it filled up some time ago.  Morgantown had their earlybird on from 10/1 to 10/6 - 10 months before the race!  I got the HIM price during that time for just a little over what the Olympic is now.  The Pittsburgh early bird ends on 10/31.

I would like to be able to assess my training during the season, or even late winter, but it either becomes a lot more expensive, or you miss out on your race.
