Heat index was well above 100 by early afternoon. Did not take anough fluids for first loop & ended up riding about 45 minutes with no fluids. Had flat tire at mile 48. Dropped my last bottle around mile 90. Went by two stores-but forgot $$$. Started one hour run & wheels totally fell off by mile two.Walk/run to finish hour. My body & confidence are totally gone. My training has gone so well for the last 3 months-this is not the way i wanted to enter my taper. Sorry to vent, but I'm just frustrated |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread When I read that a person had to end their I.M. quest after crashing over RR tracks in broke my heart. I'm sorry to hear this. Hopefully you will heal quickly enough to do something with your fitness later in the fall. Looks like many of us are feeling sluggish. Yesterday I convinced myself I had fallen out of shape, had lost all good form in everything, and would have to struggle to do a 1.2 mile swim. None of this is true however. Last week I had a great long swim, long ride, and long run. To start this week, this morning I ran four miles, each one progressively faster- 8:32; 7:44; 6:36; 5:52 and it did wonders for my confidence just to know that I am still fit. I'm not saying to go out and attempt a 5k or 10k PR or anything, but doing a shorter-faster workout can sometimes help to shake out some cobwebs. Peace, ~Sam |

This is how you should be feeling by this point, totally beat down and suffering after months of hard training. This is all just practice for the big race, so this is the best time to make mistakes and learn from them. opiejoe - 2009-08-09 7:42 PM Got in last long ride-112. My training has gone so well for the last 3 months-this is not the way i wanted to enter my taper. Sorry to vent, but I'm just frustrated Running out of water was the only real problem you had. You should remain confident in your fitness level. This is exactly what you are supposed to fee like if you've been progressively wearing out and rebuilding your body for the big day. If your training plan over the past 4 months has been a periodization plan, you've been through several blocks of 3-4 weeks of tough training followed by 1 week of lighter hours, with each 3-4 week block getting progressively harder. That means that you've just finished the final (and toughest) training block of your year. If your body is not completely empty, you've either not trainined to full potential or you're a pro/freak that can take even more punishment of a tougher training plan. Sounds like you are exactly where you need to be. The final weekend of the last hard week is designed to completely drain the body. Don't let it mess with your confidence, though. In fact, you should be emboldened, knowing that you've gotten every drop out of your legs. The taper is meant for the recovery. Mentally, we'll all feel like we're getting sluggish, gaining weight over these next couple of weeks. Don't stop training, but resist the desire to hit the road too hard. Training should be at 50-75% effort, and 50-75% distance for a good two weeks in order to let your body heal and strengthen what's been broken down over the summer. Virtually no additional fitmess can be gained in the last two weeks, so just take it easy and maintain what you've worked so hard to accumulate - and get plenty of rest to recover. Stay safe out there.

Master 2381 Dallas, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Yeah, I had a bad weekend of training too. The workout on Saturday was supposed to be a race simulation. The bike went OK. But, when I got to the run I just didn't have anything left. I think this was due to not being recovered from my last long run and from chronic dehydration. I was thirsty during the entire workout. Anyway, it's done. Onward to taper and some fast workouts. < 3 weeks. Can't wait to be there. |

Expert 762 Missouri | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Great weekend of training for me. Saturday: 1 hour swim (2.6 miles), 6 hour bike (108 miles), 45 min run (4.5 miles). It was 97 degrees, with a 105 Heat Index and 30-40 mph winds. Chose the hillest course in the KC area. . Good news is that I felt great, especially on the run, the run time is slow because I was walking with my training partner for half of it because he was in pretty bad shape. Sunday: 2 hour run (14 miles and felt AWESOME!!!!) For those that didn't get in their long bikes/runs as planned don't worry too much about it, you will not gain any or lose any fitness between now and race day. The main focus now is to get their without any injuries and ready to go. Don't try and makeup any workouts this close in either, especailly long runs. |

Pro 3730 NorCal | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I was had food poisoning this week and it wound up draining me more than I thought....5 hours ride was 4.5 hours and the transition run....that did not happen. Having trainined for IMKY last year, I like going back and checking out my logs from last year. Thought I would share what I posted a year ago...enjoy and feel free to add your own You might be training for an IM if - U are hungry all the time (even after finishing a meal your stomach groans for more) - your hair is always wet from pool, shower or sweat - the laundry basket is full of sweat-wicking fabrics with a few pair of underwear thrown in - you are constantly hungry - you have no patience (in fact have stopped going to Starbucks because having more than 2 people in line in front of you means waiting too f-in long for a coffee!) - Gu and electrolyte drinks are their own food group - incessant hunger - when you leave the gym, people at the front desk say "see you later" rather than "have a nice day" - body glide, deodorant, GU and goggles are in your glovebox in the car - people no longer ask "how are you?" they ask "how's the training going?" - have I mentioned the hunger? - you are always packing/unpacking clothes for the next workout - you significant other tells you over dinner how the movie/tv show you watched last night ended b/c you fell asleep watching it - you debate eating your arm while waiting for the waitress to bring over the friggin bread at a restaurant for fear you may starve to death - you stop trying to figure out how much money you have spent training - you know that surviving all of the above is worth having an IM finisher's medal!!!! |

I said "what is this??" and she replied " it's you passed out at the finish line!!!". I then asked "well were is Mr. Ben (my training partner for IMKY) and she repklied "Oh, he is over there outside the picture throwing up" What can you say?????? |

Member 20 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Wow... IT is already here... I have to be honest... I have trained as much as my 'busy life' allowed me... and I broke a lot of barriers (swiming!!!!)... but I haven't had the chance to have either a long bike or a long run. This is my LAST week of heavy traning... and I do not have time to put them together (I will be on a family trip during the weekend... hence... no training at all). This is my plan: tomorrow morning I'll do 3 hours of bike before work... and three after work (that sums 6... and I guess it should count as a long ride). Wednesday I'll do the same with the run.... 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening... with this I will close the training before tapering... Is this a good game plan? |

Depends on your ability to recover. The six hours of riding sounds OK to me, especially spaced out like that. But 4 hours of running in one day 2.5 weeks before IM seems like too much unless you have an amazing base. I'd be worried about getting an injury. |

Expert 762 Missouri | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Yeah, it was up on the site for about 10 minutes and then it was gone. I wonder what the deal is? Why they don't have a mass start is beyond me. . The reason for TT start the first year (2007) is because the water was so high and the current so strong. . .. I think the Mass start is a beautiful thing and would take care of the worries about getting there to line up at 2:30 am, etc. . . Plus you don't know who you are truly racing. . I mean, if someone in your age group passes you, or you pass someone, you might wonder. . "did they start 20 minutes before or after me or ???" I guess that only applies for Kona hopefulls though? |

Not sure what is going on. According to the athlete guide the course will be open until Midnight, so 17 hours. Although you only REALLY have the full 17 hours if you are one of the ones in the water. LAst year I think the course was open for 17 hours after the last person got in the water. |

Regular 118 Grand Rapids | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I have a question about the IMKY swim and I'm not sure if it's been discussed yet. I'm trying to make the transition from being a comfortable wetsuit swimmer to feeling comfortable without it. With a lot of practice in the open water I am feeling much more comfortable now. My question, is how choppy/wavy is the Ohio River? I've noticed I get tired much quicker when the water is choppy. |
