Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Someone shared this with me this week and I thought I'd pass it along with some edits and thoughts after wards. Sports fantastic. It’s a really amazing thing that we get to choose our path’s with. In a lot of ways, it’s like training for life without serious consequences. You know? I can go see if I can go flat out in a TT and worst case, I limp home tail between my legs having blown to bits. 30’ later I can go on with my day and things are good. If I invested all my savings with Bernie Madoff… That would also have been a risk… but the consequences would have been a LOT worse. Sport is cool that it helps us learn, grow, eat some lumps and experience some great moments but, in a safer way. It’s hard to find our way with it. But as we evolve, there’s a path for everyone. It’s not a stable path, it has alternate routes etc – sort of like a pick your own adventure book (remember those J). Some days it’s hard, frustrating. Others fantastic. In the end, the influence of all of it is awesome. Keep digging and building your path Kathy. I found over last 5-6 years participating in different variations of sport, I have learned a lot about myself. At first I saw myself repeating same behaviors in sport situations and then through some insights saw same patterns in my life outside of sport. The tougher the journey the more I find I need to stretch myself and in the end grow. I encourage all of us to look at what we are doing, why we are doing it and make sure it is bringing joy to our lives. Paths can change and we need to be open to trying new and different things stretching ourselves with a new distance, new sport, or a situation that new. Racing and training is great as it can do so much for both our bodies and minds. Do you relate to this idea? |

Paths can change and we need to be open to trying new and different things stretching ourselves with a new distance, new sport, or a situation that new. Racing and training is great as it can do so much for both our bodies and minds. Do you relate to this idea? I relate. The thing about sports, especially team sports is a whole lifetime is played out in a season. I mean, sure, as time goes on teams mature and change and plan for the future but each season you start with a fresh slate. My theory on sport is that people need conflict in their lives and sport provides that. It provides a goal, a chance to achieve it, and ultimatly an end, good or bad. Solo, endurance sports of course are different. Each race's experience or even serious training session exists on its own, so you can try different things, like going all out or different nutrition or breaking it down differently. Then you get up, and get to try it the next day or week or month. Sure, races flow together and you got your A, B, C idea of racing but you live a whole lifetime in an endurance race, no two ways about it. You start fresh, excited or with apprehension, you attack it or you take it easy, you reach your goal or you fail, but at the end it is over and something is accomplished and learned. Maybe it is transferable to normal life maybe it isn't. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() running4beer - 2009-03-27 11:17 AM Sorry to be MIA for a while. Still mulling everything over... here's the deal: So, Doc says yes on I need ankle surgery (4-6wks in a hard cast, 2-3 in a walking boot, rehab + all the fun you can handle!), but No on needing it right away. Yes to continue races - even running - AS FAR AS THE ANKLE'S CONCERNED, as long as there's a YES on caution/checking in with the unstable right every now and again. What I can't do are things that require pushing off from the outside or inside of the foot, like ice-skating or quick stepping and dodging sports like soccer or hockey (or aggressively darting around folks in a crowded road race). That's ok, they weren't on my list. BUT, this also includes those balancing exercises in PT! UGH. I guess I could do everything but the balance work, but I feel like that's potentially one of the roots of my recurring runner's knee. Really, Idunno. So, here're the questions bouncing around in my head: since I have the choice, when is it convenient to be out of commission for 2 and a half months? Do I still want to do my first tri in May? Do I want to have surgery right away and potentially pick up the second half of the season? Do I drop out of my July 4th relay (~10k)? Do I at least try to not be in a cast for July 4th cause my bf is still running and we're planning on camping? Camping in a cast would suck.... plus, if I didn't run I'd want to be support since we need to supply our own transportation and beverages for our team. Do I want to be in a cast in the summer or late fall after this season? I guess summer would be best for work-related reasons... I hate having to do my day trips to Jersey, but gawd help me if I have to do them on crutches! What would you do? Raincheck your very first tri? Bail on your relay team? Work out the season without going above sprints? (5k run is no prob - I can do those cold if I have to) Don't do anything differently until your body tells you to? (Although what does that mean if you have to sign up for events so far in advance?) Here's my potential 'A Race' List: 5/10 - NE Season Opener Sprint Tri - Would be my first!!!! 7/4 - Around Mount Desert Island Relay (~10k)-- also 4th of July weekend camping in Maine 8/8 - Wild Fish 2 Mile Swim (there's also a 5k swim in July I'd love to do) All the rest on my list I could potentially take or leave or find another event. These are the precious few I'm afraid of losing.
Oh, and PS---
![]()
Tough luck. I don't know what to say. Part of me says to have the surgery after the season, your body will be broken down and then you can use the time to totally recover, not just your ankle. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm feeling much better. Bad sushi isn't good food. T-minus 6 days until HIM. Only reliable good healthy food until Saturday. I was MIA for a couple days. My girlfriends and I took off for a weekend away. I enjoyed some beautiful weather, good food (lots of local produce) and plenty of sleep. So awesome. I feel very rested. I hope everyone had a good weekend.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hooray for Tuesday. I have my last Turbo tonight before the race this weekend. The posted workout looks like an easy spin and "run" to keep the body loose. Taper madness sucks ... but I'm being a good girl. I'm so glad I didn't throw in 3 weeks of taper ... two is plenty. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all! it's RedSoxChick - using 'the boys' computer and posted without switching users Thanks for the 'inspires'- i should have clearified my post about 'work' - its just contract/part time but i'm so excited about doing 'something'. My former life was interior design and construction project management on the Commercial side and it seems that fate is leading me to the home-owner side. I saw an 6 bedroom home today that BLEW MY MIND - GEORGOUS! So now i'm doing a combo of work for someone else (sort of as an intern) AND starting my own buisiness which i hope will generate a cash flow - very exciting times!! but i gotta say getting up at 5:15am to workout then working a full day for the first time in 3 months is EXHAUSTING! ZZZZZZZ

It's my longest race to date. Every time I race a new distance I get worked up ... then the gun goes off and I'm fine. No more BMX bike dreams ... I'm trying to figure out Ironlive to send to family that want to track my progress. Any tricks to get over the nerves? I'm considering some light yoga tonight to destress. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes I am post padding....guess I could have tacked this on the last message! Just wanted to share a couple of things with y'all.....today I had an awesome swim lesson with my Olympian. We worked on stroke count. Yesterday I was dicking around on my own and working like mad to get it down to 22 . Today with the help of Andrea my stroke count was reduced to 15!!! Now I am NOT saying its easy.....quite the opposite, it is an exercise in hypoxia to get to the end of 25 meters with such few breaths. But I will plug away at it. She wants me to focus ONLY on this for the next bit. I am going to work on thi suntil it feels natural and normal. Second thingy: I ran a little 5k today to see where my Vdot is at and did it in 25:29. Fastest I have ever run that distance! All in all a good day!
