Nice ride and nice pics Kiri!

kirih - 2010-03-06 8:30 PM

I have just posted a brief pictorial tribute to my 50 for Judi ride.
I learned today that after riding 56 miles I could not even run 1 let alone 13 at this time. Maybe stumble/walk a couple max... but lounging on the couch with my legs up is so much more comfortable right now... There's a lotta work to do before i'll be ready for HIM. The good news is I improved my time up to Vista House by 26+ minutes since the same ride last year. Probably wouldve been a tad bit faster without the heinous head wind up the 5 mile hill. Now i'm going to drink some OJ and think about soon to be made home made pizza for dinner. FOOD!

I always try to smile during a race, probably more then I actually do in everyday life.
I learned that in my mentor group before I did my first tri. Makes it more fun!
Smile and thank the volunteers!

jdbadger - 2010-03-07 9:13 PM

Wow..you guys were even smiling after the race?  Glad to see you had a good time.

I thank lots of the volunteers and I like to joke with some of the cops that are directing traffic.  Just adds a little fun to the day.

I skipped Crossfit this morning in my effort to be smarter about training and rest.  Both my massage guy (a bike racer) and my coach are pushing this.  However, I will get in a walk or an easy trainer ride tonight along with doing at least part of one of my ballet/yoga/pilates fusion DVDs (for the stretching aspect).

Everyone here really pushed themselves this weekend.  What is everyone else doing today to rest/recover yet get their peach?

And Kate, I think Elke is really gone.  She was supposedly signed up for both Desert and the Surf City Half Marathon and I checked the results pages and couldn't find her.

I have two decisions to make.  The first is about my bike coach.  It costs me $275 per month.  I will say that he always promptly and thoroughly answers any questions that I have.  He does give me workouts, but I genuinely think that I could follow one of the plans here on BT and get as good of a plan.  I had thought that by getting a local coach that I would be able to ride with him and get direct feedback on my cycling skills, but that has only happened once.  That isn't always his fault as the last time I knew of a ride and was planning on going, Chuck took that opportunity to get a severe case of pneumonia and land in ICU.  The coach doesn't do these rides on a schedule so it is nothing I can plan around and I am out of town on the weekend quite a bit.

I did ask for bicycling book suggestions on Triathlon Talk and got several what appear to be very good ones.  I have ordered them (five books!!) through Amazon and will have them on Wednesday.  I believe (without having seen the books yet) that all of these books taken together will give me a great deal of information about how to become a better cyclist.  And then, of course, one has to go out and actually ride the bike a lot to put this knowledge into practice.  After I look through the books, I will post my initial thoughts about them, just in case someone here is thinking about getting a bike book.

Originally, I had planned only on using the coach through the HIM, but then I hadn't signed up for IMAZ at the time.  I sort of think that I could do this on my own just about as well as with using the coach, but then I wonder if I am disrespecting the IM distance and just plain being foolish.

Any thoughts?

The second involves the power meter v. Computrainer.  My massage guy (remember, he is a top level bike racer) thinks that a power meter for someone at my level is just plain silly.  He says, maybe next year, but even then you can tell he doesn't really believe it.  My coach said somewhat the same thing.  He says that if my goal is just to finish the IM within the cutoff times, we (notice the "we") can achieve that goal with training by heart rate.  They have me pretty much convinced.

My coach does think that a Computrainer can be a great useful and motivational tool.  I posted a question about power meter v. Computrainer on Triathlon Talk and the answers were pretty much universal to go power meter over Computrainer, but I suspect those people have different racing goals than I do.   I really do not want to spend the money on a power meter just to have another tool.  Besides, I can always get it next year.  The fact that my coach approves of the Computrainer is a point in favor of keeping him because I know the CT generates a lot of data and he could help me use it.

Any thoughts?

Kate - did you ever make it over to that bike shop in Phoenix to use the Computrainer to ride the HIM course?  I can tell you that if I had that available, between now and the race, I would do it three times.  I really think you ought to do it at least once and soon so that if you see the need for an additional ride you would have time to get it in.   Besides, I am eager to know what you think.

No answers for you Leah but my inner instinct is if your current coach feels it's not necessary at this stage of your tri career then to me it seems like a lot of money better put elsewhere.

Hi Leah - what specifically do you want to improve on with the cycling?  Also - is it possible to use the 275 a month you pay to your coach and get a tri coach instead. The reason I ask is that the tri coaches around here seem to be a little more hands on and open to scheduling things through out the week instead of just on weekends. Further they would be able to discuss the cycling techniques and issues inherent with trying to run after biking.

As far as the power meter..I am in agreement that it is a tool that you probably do not need.  What are you going to do with the additional data?  The two best triathletes I know spend their time training and listening to their bodies instead of reviewing more and more data.  I must admit that I was a data junkie but am now just going to keep my garmin and that will be it.

Hope everyone has a productive week planned.

Leah - great job on your race in crappy conditions.   If you know the make and model of your bike computer just go online and get the manual to tell you how to change to miles...or just let me know the make and model and I will find it for you.

Again..good job..and nice speed on the bike..especially in wet conditions.

My initial feeling is the same as Scotts. Ditch the bike coach for a tri coach who will work with your bike limiter.

As far as power tap, I have absolutely no experience with it, but seems like a really expensive piece of equipment for something you can do perfectly well with an HRM or even RPE, and the money saved could be better spent on tri coach who can help you maximize either technique and a computrainer . You are not trying to wring out minutes between your competitors!

That said. Like running the only way to get better on the bike is to bike more. And more and more. There is a good article in the March issue of Bicycling Mag about plateau busting (whether you're a beginner or seasoned veteran), the paragraph from the article that I think is a good one is this...

"In order to increase the percentage of VO2 max that you can draw on, Crawford recommends a progressive-pace plan. If you can sustain average pace of 20 mph, for example, increase your pace to 21 mph for 30 minutes during your next ride. Once you can do that comfortably, add five minutes at a time until you are proficient at the faster pace. Then start all over again, one mile per hour faster. Find a fun and challenging environment to tackle this workout for two days straight, followed by a recovery day. A full week workout would look like this M: off, T: Easy Spin, W: Pace Plateau Buster, R: Pace Plateau Buster, F: Recovery, S: PPB, N: PPB. It's not a quick fix but this kind of pace work can wring almost every drop out of your potential".

This seems like an easy way to work on your speed without being overly complicated while allowing you to be in better touch with your pacing.

And while I think it might be a good idea to ride your course on the computrainer. I think it might be a better idea to pick a similar route and try to get in a ride that is closer to 70-75 miles (about 130% of race distance). It will give you a feel for what an effort post 56 miles is going to feel like (and cycling is easier than running).

dats my two cents!

Great job on continuing on in your swim even when it doesn't feel good.

Are you going to try to get in some more OWS before your HIM? I assume Oceanside is Pacific swim?
Sometimes I find it helpful to just get in the wetsuit and just wade in the water for a while, taking a few strokes with head in water, then wading some more to get comfortable with the feel of the water before I start swimming (not in race conditions obviously)...

~ AZ Sunshine ~ - 2010-03-07 1:25 PM We survived our Tri!  I'm so happy it didn't rain on us.  The rain started as soon as we were finished.  We lucked out!  Hopefully Leah didn't rained on.

The race went OK.  The best part was that I got to see Lisa.  She took a bunch of photos so I'm anxious to see how they turned out.

I'll post a race report soon, but the quick update is that I didn't do as well as I had hoped.  I feel like I have a LONG way to go to be ready for the HIM.  I choked on the swim again.  I think what got me this time is that the water tasted HORRIBLE!  It taked like it was 95% salt.  I wasn't prepared for that.  I must have looked like a mess in the water b/c the lifeguard came over to me 3 times to see if I need help or a break.  (It was only a 600 m swim!

I'm still waiting on the results.  We'll see how it goes.

Can't wait to hear how Leah and Elke's race went.

My race Race Report is up.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=198898&posts=2&start=1

Leah - I'm with the others - Tri Trainer and Computrainer.  I haven't done the compu ride yet but I'm calling tomorrow.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I feel a little better today seeing my times.  I think that I had a lot of first race jitters.  I'm going to regroup and power out these next couple of weeks.  We can do this 70.3.  It is just a matter of how slow we are and how badly we will hurt the next day.

Debb - Welcome back!  Give us an update when you have time.

Kiri - Thanks for the feedback on the swim.  I looked at my old races last year and I have come a long way.  One race my OWS was 4minute a 100!  I just have to keep swimming!  Hopefully it will get better.

Queenie - Thanks for all your positive comments and feedback.  I really appreciate it and am glad you are going on this journey with us.

Scott -  Keep plugging away on your training!  Your race will be here before you know it.  Take it from me and Leah!  We wish we had another month!

Lisa - Looking forward to our ride on Wednesday.  It is a pretty ride with one serious climb.

Good Morning All!! I guess it is afternoon for some of you.  I plan on running at lunch today instead of before volleyball. I am hoping that my legs are not as dead as they were for last week's game.

Leah and Kate - do you have a target finishing time for your HIM?

Breakfast check:  3-4 ounces of nitrate/nitrite free chicken breast (120 calories), 10 oz. grape/cherry tomatoes (60 calories), and a medium red grapefruit (120 calories).  What did everyone else have for breakfast?

My bike shoes are finally dry, but my running shoes are still a little damp.  My biking books came today.  I'm glad because I leave tomorrow for a conference in San Francisco and that will give me something to read in the hotel room.

I got in my swim this morning.  I got some Zoomers, but I can't see what the big deal is.  I also got a "wetronome," but I didn't have time to read the directions before the swim so I will have to wait to use it until next Tuesday.  Does anyone use this or know someone who does?

I was hoping to get in my Judi ride this afternoon, but my morning went into the afternoon and so that didn't work out.  Probably just as well because it is really windy.  My Judi ride might be combined with my Kiri ride.  I will go on the trainer tonight, but I am not doing 50 miles on the trainer for anyone.

What did everyone else do today?

Funny!  One of my friends his 50 miles on his ROLLERS!  Not me, I'm still askeerd of the rollers.

I had a short but intense swim this morning, did some core work at lunch and a short run this evening.  Debating on getting on the trainer but my hip fexors are kinda cranky and I need them for the official ride this Sunday!

Nothing too exciting here in recovery land week. Did a short walk this afternoon, and will go in for a 20 minute run on the dreadmill tonight followed by some serious stretching and rolling. That's it.

Oh and I got in a serious vacuuming and sweeping training session of the entire downstairs of the house - upstairs to follow.

Had a vanilla greek yoghurt with a banana and a handful of cinnamon puffins thrown in for extra crunch. And a coffee of course.

I'm on vacation. Breakfasts are an important part of the vacation. I don't stick to my usual pb on w wheat bread and oatmeal later though I did have that yesterday. Today I had protein pancakes. I did get a bike ride and a pilates class in today. Looking forward to meeting up with Kate tomorrow for a ride in the AM.

Today I met a fellow BTer at a tri shop here in Scottsdale, she said she saw Kate and I at the race the other day but wasn't sure I was me. After we left the Tri shop I drove to a tj maxx and parked next to car that had a license plate that read tridiva.

Hey gang.  Tomorrow I'm meeting Lisa at 7am for a morning bike ride through the desert.  I'm hoping that the weather is better for her.  It has been raining off and on all week.

Scott - My goal is to tackle the OWS and get out before the cut off time.  I have an hour and a half to get out of the water.  If I can get out of the water in less than an hour I will be on Cloud 9!  After the swim I just want to survive the rest of the race.  I REALLY want to finish.  I'll be so sad if I don't meet a cut off or can't finish for some reason.

This weekend I'm trying to do a long ride . . .  Hopefully on the Computrainer.  We are working on setting it up now.  I also need to get a long run in as well.

Tomorrow marks 16 days!!!  YIKES!!

Yeah, I feel the same way about the time cut off.  That part makes me nervous.  I know I'll be BOP on the swim.  Probably towards BOP on the bike & run too depending on my body's level of cooperation.....Glad I have months away to work on this!

You'll be okay, trust your training and follow your plan!!

Good morning everyone.  Got my run in and Crossfit and now I am packing up to go to San Francisco for a conference.  Of course, I will get to see my grandbabies while I am up there.  Two weeks and two days to the HIM.  I wish it was two months and two weeks and two days.

Have a good day all.
