Question to those that have used disc covers or are planning to use disc covers for the race.  I used covers for the first time in a 1/2 iron race a couple of weeks ago.  My overall experience was positive.  The system that I used (as proposed by many who use them) is to tape the covers to the wheels around the rim and go without the fasteners.  For the race it worked great.  However, on car ride home I took off the rear wheel from my bike and laid it in the truck of my car to take home (the reason being I didn't want the wind blowing the bike and disc wheel all over the place on the bike rack).  When I got home the cover on the side laying down came off.  I'm not sure if it was the heat in the truck or just the gravity from a long ride home that ultimately loosened the tape, but nevertheless I'm now concerned about riding with the coveres absent of the fasteners.  (BTW - With the fasteners the disc is slightly warpped, hence the reason to ride without them).  Anyone have a problem with disc covers coming "untapped" during a race, or was the problem likely only the result of laying the wheel down and gravity taking over plus the higher temps in the trunk.

Was intersted in elevation so that i could do some training rides round NYC that are equal or more...    Riding LP this w/e but have not invested in garmin so stick with map my ride.

And as i`m now riding a TT for the first time ever, i do not have the comfort (in many ways!!!) of my regular road bike.

Well done on the Jersyman tri guys - that was my first ever tri, 12 mths ago (do not ask why i started with a HIM).    Is there still that nasty hill bit on the run?

Harriman State Park can get you some elevation and climbing similar to Lake Placid.

I rode Placid last summer, one loop but it took me two days (compounded mechanical problems at mile 50ish, went back the next day and finished). I rode Harriman this past Saturday. I don't recall any single climb at Placid that equaled that long steep climb early in the loop at HarryMan.

I have 11-25 cassette on my bike and have a concern if this what I should be using on the LPIM bike course. Would you say that I should be ok with the current settings or rather change it to 12-27 or 12-28 cassette?  Please advise...

Hard to say if it is good or not. Depends on how strong of a rider you are. That setup seems to be in the middle between a standard and compact crank.

Are you able to ride the LP course before the race to test out the gearing That would be the best test....

Detroit Dan - 2011-05-27 9:22 AM I just paid a Billion dollars for a cottage at Placid Bay Inn. Frown

On my drive in to work this morning I saw a billboard for the Powerball or PA state lottery or something. It's at $171M. The very first thought I had was if I won (I don't even play) I'd upgrade my accommodations at Lake Placid. Then I thought about quitting my job and buying new bikes.

If I win the lottery, I'll just bribe an official to put my name in the record books. (top 10 would be nice)

A budy of mine who was up at placid last week says his garmin data shows just under 6000ft of ascent with autocorrect on too for 2 loops. Looks like the number I'll ballpark at for the rest of my training. I won't be up there til the weekend of tupper lake Tinman but I'll see what my garmin reads then. Granted, I won't be doing a whole ton of big training after that but at least I'll have another reading. So anyone asking about the climbing shoot for 3000ft per 56 miles it seems (or more).

So achy and tired and feeling crappy in S/B/R....whine whine whine whine whine*

There I got it all out.

Hope everyone has a good weekend of training whether it be in LP or whereever you are. Last day of school today (HURRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and tomorrow I am starting my journey to Vancouver. Going to try and get a good training weekend in myself with the travel. Luckily I used to compete across BC in swimming so I know where all the good rec centers are with swimming pools. Haha.

Well off to finish my last exam of second year. In 2.5hrs I will be 1/2 MD. I don't think I've ever been this happy for a school year to end.....

Thanks man. I consider myself an average rider. Yeah, I'll be in Lake Placid mid June for the Fireman Training Camp. Absolutely agree that riding the actual course will tell me if the set up I have will work for me.

Speaking of bikes at Lake Placid. I consider myself a weak slow rider. I have a Specialized Sport triple.  50 x 39 x 30T

I'm thinking the extra gear in the front is a good thing for me? Is it?

Out for a 5 hour ride today, crashed in the rain at the 2 hour mark. Busted up shoulder and hip but overall not to bad. Hoping to be back on bike tomorrow.

Doug,

Hope your injuries are not too severe. Often they don't end up hurting too much until the next day... Heal fast. Any damage to the bike?

Did my longest run to date for this training cycle; 16 miles. Feel pretty good except for new blisters on top of and next to old blisters. Once that skin get irritated it's hard to protect it. I used duct tape but it pulled in some areas causing irritation. I haven't had blister issues since marathon training. Such is life

Bet I got caught in the same storm that you did yesterday. Started out in Central Mass and rode out to Quabbin Reservoir. When I got to Ware it started pouring buckets. I was fortunate enough to be able to hide out underneath an overhang at a store until the worst of it passed.  Had to ride back on route 9 and get splashed by motorists, oh well, good training in the event of rain come race day.

Heal quickly.

Happy Memorial Day! Just checking in from Lake Placid before heading home later on this afternoon. The training weekend up here was awesome and I'm feeling even more excited for the race after training on the course. Highlights of the course for me: the Keene descent (surprisingly since this was the part I was most terrified of) and the swim in mirror lake was freakin awesome.

Ha! Did a 15 mile run yesterday (was supposed to be 17-19) and had to stop since my nipples were hurting so bad!  I forgot to bring my Body Glide stick and the cream doesn't work the same.  Didn't help that I've lost weight so my running shirt was a bit big (and sweaty).  I literally had blood running down my chest and had to run the last three miles shirtless (and be one of "those" guys....)

I will NOT make that mistake again!

Yeah, that's gross.  And it hurts.  Yesterday, during an 80-mile bike ride, my left outer butt cheek started to feel a little irritated.  Needless to say when I got home I looked and I had a giant, red welt the exact size and shape as my chamois on my bike shorts.  Stitch line and all!   I always lube in the middle, but never thought to lube the outer sides.  In three and a half years, close to 9k miles of cycling, I never got a saddle rash before.  From now on I'll make sure to rub chamois cream all over the chamois, and add some extra cream to my backside.  I think humidity was the culprit.  Let this be a lesson for everyone else to.  Trust me!!
