Does anyone know if there is a Whole foods or any grocery store near the race site? Not planning on renting a car as we are staying at the host hotel. Will be needing some supplies though and hoping to be able to walk wherever needed.

So I'm still trying to decide about the practice swim.  I'd like to get in and swim a little, get a feel for the water temp, etc.  But is there a risk of getting sick?  How's the water quality?  I would just hate to get some e-coli/GI thing.

Other than that, I'm ready, excited, nervous.  Heading out Thursday morning, bike shipped out today.

I'm not touching the water with a 10' pole before Sunday.  Not worth the risk, however little it may be.

I may be out, our flight doesn't get in until 6ish that night, then after getting our luggage and rental car not sure I'll make it in time.  I'm going to try and be at the Tribe party on Friday evening though, I'll either be wearing a Tyr visor or an Austin 70.3 hat.

I've heard of this concern before, but I have swam in TTL a minimum of 20 times (4x in the last month) and I have yet to have an issue.

The journey begins. We just departed Houston for the Long drive to IMAZ. It's really hiting me now. I was last min joe and hopped on price line yesterday. 48 per night-yea for the cheepscate. We will see how the Fiesta conference center and resort is. At least it's just 2 mo from the dance. For the practice swim it is a yes for me. I bonked 2 sub 65 water swims that I didn't test the water and nailed 2 that I did. Maybe it's a placebo affet but that's good enough for me.

I'll be at the practice swim, I'm easy to spot, I'll be wearing a swim cap.

Wouldn't it be cool to have an all white wetsuit?  I'm sure there's a good reason why nobody makes one, right?

Should we all set a tentative time to show up and swim?

I won't be coming down until Friday so I can't make the Thursday meet-up either. Practice swim could be a good place to match names to faces. I've never gotten sick from the water at TTL, and I've drank so much I was worried Tempe was going to send me a bill.

Coincidentally, I will also be in a black wetsuit. Mine has blue highlights on the shoulders, if that helps.

I'm reading "The Blood of Heros" and felt this was appropriate: "they have all been tries, and have confidence in themselves" Green Jameson. That confidence would soon be tested...

There's a Whole Foods about 3 miles from campus (Tempe - race start) on Rural and Baseline.  It's a short cab ride and is worth it.  That or there's a Safeway right next to campus on Rural and Broadway.

Interesting thought on the wetsuit. Wonder if there are any rules against putting hot pink tape on the arms so family can easily see you swimming.

You don't carbo load the night before.  TWO nights before.  And funny thing is, they have a carb heavy meal already for you two nights before!

Carbs that late in the game don't do much for you.  I stick to low fiber, high protein foods.  Maybe chicken with a tomato sauce and a few vegies...

Well, that's always been part of MY nutrition plan.

Here's a really good family friendly restaurant...Family owned and ran and plenty of carbs. This was my first job after arriving in AZ back in 1999. I'm still very close to the owner and some of the staff.  The bartender, Mark, is an avid cyclists and plans on doing his first tri in 2013. I'm warning you, though, he will talk your ear off.

Tell them you're in for the Ironman and Jasen Santiago sent you in and you might get a free dessert or something.

I neighbor of mine who lived out there for a long time recommended a place called Oregano's, on University, or something like that name.  He said they have awesome pizza and really good pasta dishes.
