July Training... I'm pretty happy with the way my training is going.  The evening pop up thunderstorms everyday is killing my swim training.  This month was focused on building the run.

July's totals:
Bike:12h 54m 59s  - 206.41 Mi
Run:12h 36m 43s  - 68.02 Mi
Swim:2h 10m 56s  - 7128.08 Yd

I have my first OLY distance race this Saturday, nervious but think I'm prepared as much as I can be.  This is my target race for the season.

Great swim (for me) today.  I did a ladder -- 100,200,400,800,800,400,200,100 -- and most important was able to ignore those little voices that gave me reasons to make it easier, shorten it, outright quit, etc.  That's a mental breakthrough for me.  I daresay I even enjoyed this swim. Surprised

I'm packing the car now (well, in a moment) to head for the mountains.  I'm not sure when we are coming back, but I'll do my daily check-in from the coffee shop in town (my only internet access while there...).

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and keep up all that great training!

Michael/Experior- I like that ladder idea, I might have to try that out tomorrow.
I did a long run this morning, my training plan only called for 30 minutes or so, but I think I'll miss my Saturday run since I'm going out of town, so I did a long 8-miler. It was 9am, but by the time I finished running, my shoes were squishing from sweat. It's just so humid! Then, I had to tackle mowing the backyard, so I bet I sweat a gallon today...

" This year was supposed to be about IMWI, but I had too many setbacks over the winter and spring to put in a good performance in September.  I will still race it, and I'll enjoy it, but my expectations are quite modest at this point.  For the next 5 weeks, I'll just do what I can to prepare, and then reassess my situation when it's done."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It seems like sometimes when I let all the expectations go and just go out and race I have some of my best results. Or if they aren't my best, I am usually pretty happy with the result because of the lowered/nonexistent expectations. My PR HM this year was like that. I would have been OK with a 1:45 so the good result was such a nice surprise. Also, the lowered expectations meant I didn't fly off the line from the start so I actually may have raced better.

I would not be surprised if you have a much better race than you expect. Your training volume looks pretty darn respectable and you have a lot of fitness base to draw on when the miles get tough. I am sure you wanted to do more. I always do. I think what you are doing will be enough for a very good race.

Happy Friday! Good luck to all of the racers this weekend!

Anyone else have anything going on this weekend?

We're just enjoying having both kids at home before they leave in a few weeks. Throw in the normal weekend S/B/R workouts and the weekend goes by quickly.

Friday wkts: Swim completed, run on tap for this afternoon.

Did a pilates class since I need to work on my core. Holy cow, what a way to feel weak! I was one of 2 guys out of 15 total in the class and I felt like I was the only one struggling the whole time. Hope this improves my S/B/R performance somehow. I'm trying on switching to Pilates/Yoga from heavy lifting to see if it makes any sort of a difference.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Morning, all.  Thanks for those thoughts, Jason.

We've arrived to a disaster area of a yard, so I'm going to try to get that sorted today.  I'll throw a short run in there somewhere, and probably hit the trainer tonight for a bit.  Long ride tomorrow.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Michael,
Where are you? Do you have a family cabin that you visit on the weekends?

Nate- We do pilates and yoga moves with our students at school. Most of my second graders can hold the plank position for a minute by December. The third and fourth graders can normally hold the position for 1.5 minutes. I do calisthenics 5X a day during the school year with my students.

This is the normal warmup routine for my students in Grades 1-4. We modify the reps for the 1st graders at the first of the year. Last year we did everything in reps of 12 for the year 2012. Starting out with static stretching is not the best way to begin a workout. But it works because we have about 60+ kids in each class. They start off sitting down which makes it a lot easier to control!

V-sit (side stretch 12 to right, 12 left, 12 center)
Toe touch stretch (to 12)
Point and flex toes (12) with one leg bent, switch legs
Feet touching, legs out to the side and stretch (12)
Lay on back, knees bent, drop knees to each side and stretch to count of 12, 2X on each side
12 curl ups
12 bicycles
plank
pushups (12)
mountain climbers (12)
Jumping jacks (12)
plyometrics- jump side to side (12)
jump front to back (12)
Cross country ski 2X (12)
arm circles (30) my aide loves these.
arm stretch
squat thrusts (8)- they hate these! lol
Alternate Toe touch (12)
Touch toes, stomach, reach towards sky- 12

Then we start our aerobic portion of the class with a 3 minute warmup dance. After that it is time to start the sports skill/game for the day.

Last year we had a contest to see how quickly the kids could complete the warmup. The fastest time was around 9 minutes. Needless to say they were really tired by the end of the warmup! lol..

IMO the plank and pushups are the best exercises that you can do on a daily basis. I also try to do 30 minutes of trigger point therapy and stretching every night at home.

Catwoman - 2012-08-03 9:49 AM Michael, Where are you? Do you have a family cabin that you visit on the weekends?

I'm here:

(Not my pic, but it's where I am to within a few miles.)  Jealous now?  Tongue out

The cabin is in the middle of nowhere (left on the gravel road, right on the dirt road...).  It belongs to a good friend of mine who lives in Massachusetts and cannot get down here very often to take care of it.  So, we take care of it for him, in exchange for the use of it.

Speaking of which, I'm headed back there now to rebuild his front steps.  Enjoy your day everyone!

Good luck to all racers this weekend, kick some serious butt!

Good luck, racers!!

Michael: Gorgeous place to spend a weekend.

Jim: Nice swim!

Didn't get any swimming in this week, but getting my run training done. No race for me, but I do have a big soccer game. I know I'm going to feel like crud come Monday. I'm going to have to admit that soccer is hurting me. I'm spent and feel broken till at least Wednesday after a game, which makes training for anything else difficult. Getting really close to the time where I'm going to need to hang up my boots, and it makes me sad. I do have a tournament in 2013, then I may need to hide from it for a while.

Hi All,

My olympic tri is in the books (seemed like a good week to do an Olympic length tri, yes?).  About as I expected.  Tough course and I wasn't as prepared as I should have been.  It was hot, but it could have been worse.  3:05 total time (which was my training adjusted goal time for the race).  Will try to get a race report together later for those who are interested.  Thanks for all the good wishes!  You all were among the voices in my head that kept my feet shuffling on the run :-)  Have a great weekend, everyone.  Hope Steve's first OLY went well and good luck to anyone else racing this weekend.  Drink all you can!!

Tough ride for me this morning. Not long but some challenging intervals.  It had just rained and the humidity was just shy of 100%. Short run following the ride.  Then home for 1.5 hours of yard work.  Watched the Olympics including Galen Rupp getting the silver in the 10K.  Huge accomplishment for USA distance!!!!! Then bike cleanup and maintenance. Hour run on deck for tomorrow.

What's everyone else doing?

Good job, Stu!! Knew you could hang.

Determined to get my miles in this week, I ran my scheduled three miles and then played soccer. I thought I rehydrated well, but in the 70th minute of the game I went down with a cramp in both the shin AND calf of my right leg. Right up there with labor pain. Can't flex or point your toe for relief.

Three miles today and then a movie with the kids.

Here's the race report for anyone who is interested. One last comment after putting together the race report is that I think experience played a bigger role in this race than others. I'm almost shocked as to how close I was to my race plan/goals. Two years ago, I would have bonked / died on the run, even if I was in better shape. Last year's marathon, and triathlon race experience really helped me stay within myself for the course conditions (and my own lack of condition!). Thanks again for the comments and support, everyone!

Today, I shall watch the Olympics from a prone position on the couch.  Degree of difficulty, 0.0.

I'm watching the end of the women's Olympic marathon then heading out on an easy hour run...humidity at 90% already.

My first OLY is complete Race: Stumpy Creek International Triathlon in 3:15!  I have to say it was a great experience, it was the challenge I wanted.  The key for me to be successful was consistent training.  I hit my expected s/b/r splits within ~1 minute on a bit more difficult course than my normal training routes.  No real surprises, just tried to stay within myself and trust my training.  My legs were shaking after crossing the finishing line and almost fell over when the volunteer was taking the timing chip, so felt like I gave all I could.   I think this will be my preferred distance going forward into next year.
