bdenehy - 2012-09-24 8:39 AM Busy weekend, but nice. Between a race on Saturday and our youngest' 2nd birthday party on Sunday, my lawn and house are screaming for some attention :-)

The half took 16 minutes longer than the one 2 weeks ago but 10 minutes was in the swim which didn't have comparable distances, so 6 minutes of "real" time lost. I can live with that. I posted a RR, but here's my review of the HITS offering:

I thought they had all of their ducks in a row, they were organized, and i would do this race again (feel i have some business to finish with that bike course anyway). I dont think I would pay full freight again, but with the new pricing structure, it is very appealing. A big thing for me is that they allow race day packet pickup (but recommend coming out on Friday). Much of the benefit of a semi local race is lost on me if i have to make a separate trip.

The transition areas are really nice with slotted bike racks and stools for all, so no fighting for space on metal pole supported by sawhorses that always feel ready to tip over. Providing coffee was a nice perk too.

Support on the course was fine. The run aid stations supported the half and the full, so they had more offerings than i could think about on a half. There weren't as many volunteers as I am used to seeing, but for the number of folks on the course it was plenty. And I don't think they were local volunteers so much as employees and family of the organization. If they grow they should work on tapping local groups to support. Since this race was in their backyard, not sure how this works when they travel.

The one thing i knock them for and will bring it up with them is road signage. There was at least one police officer and a volunteer at each major intersections but there was a lot of open road between. I like to see signs like "caution-race in progress" on an open course so cars know what they are dealing with.

It was a pretty quiet race so if you like to see adoring crowds rocking the cowbells (and who doesn't?)you better bring your own....

I didn't stick around post race but they seemed to have plenty to offer, food, massage, medical...

There was one other thing i didnt like. They do an age group for every year, so not much of a group. So, with 40 finishers i was first among one male 37yrs old who finished. Not a big . As an amateur I'm always just racing myself.

Hope this helps, but i'm happy to go into more detail if you are thinking of doing one of their races.

Great job on the race Bill, and thanks for the feed back on how the race was run.  Sounds like they did a fairly good job, with some areas for improvement.

Being a little quieter and having smaller crowds is typical for the newer, longer distance races.  As they grow, this improves.

Today's ride-VERY tough!!!    93 miles completed. It was probably the hardest ride I have ever done.

Elevation Gain: 7,192 ft
Elevation Loss: 7,011 ft
Min Elevation: 5,113 ft
Max Elevation: 9,297 ft

I hope everyone had a good weekend.

way to go Kathleen - awesome ride! I hope the fall colors at 9000' were beautiful (and distracting!)!

Hows the run training going Robin?

Going well - I got a 9 mile run in today and hopefully I can get a 10 mile in over the weekend and be ready for the HM on Oct. 6.  Dealing with a little bursitis in the hip and of course my foot is something I am still working through.  I am starting to get a little nervous though as I can't find any info on registration for this run and can't get through to the LRS.  I will not be happy if it has been cancelled.

Odd that you can't find anything on it at all even if it was cancelled.

Sounds like your training is going well, I hope you figure out the race!!

Meulen - 2012-09-20 8:18 AM OK, question for those of you that have had PF.  When you start running, is it normal for it to be a little painful again?  I mean, I hadn't run for about a month.  It was not completely pain free, but tolerable.  When I'm building a base back is it going to be a little painful?  Just something I need to work through?  Or, should I be waiting till I'm completely pain free to run again even though its been a month?

I am probably not the person to respond as I still have pain and I am running.  I waited to run till it didn't feel like I was running on crushed glass. When I started running again it seemed that I would have good days and bad with the foot.  It would flare up for a few days and gradually get better (however this would happen whether I was running or not).  After awhile the flare ups would get less frequent and not last as long.  I still occasionally get one, but ice, advil and stretching usually calm it down within a day or so.

What does your PT say? I will say that at my last Ortho visit, the Doc said I could run even with my multiple foot ailments.

Good luck, you will get through it!

Thx Robin!  My PT told me I could run, and are aware of my pain levels.  I was just afraid I may have pushed him toward that answer because I WANT to run so bad.   Sounds like its normal though.  I don't have any pain when I run.  Only when I sit for periods of time.  Even when I wake it's not bad with the goofy sock thing I have on at night.

acv - 2012-09-25 2:39 PM So give me your best tips for racing in the rain. Might be a wet one for me this weekend - rain is in the forecast.....

Let's see,

Swim - no worries.

Bike - be careful.  Stay off of the white lines on the road.  They can be very slippery.  Wear a jacket in the rain (the same advice that your mom would give you...).  It's supposed to be cool this weekend too.  Wear glasses that are easy to wipe off.  I wore an aerohelmet with an attached windscreen/visor and regretted it once the visor was wet and hard to see through.

Run - no worries, bring a visor and enjoy the cool rain.  If seconds don't matter to you in transition, bag up your shoes and socks while swimming/biking.  If you don't want to lose any time, just turn your running shoes upside down.  They will still be wet, but wont have water pooling in them.

Have a great race and have fun Adam!

Awesome Bill - Thanks!

Normally I do very well in transition and seconds do mater to me but for this race I'm going to focus a a little more on comfort out on the course so un-bagging a nice dry pair of running shoes sounds really nice!

After doing IMLP in an all day rain and again watching this years Musselman which had heavy rains as well, I agree with a lot of what Bill said.  I would add a couple of things:
I ditched the glasses all together as I couldn't keep them dry.  I didn't have a rain jacket, but sure wish I did.
At Musselman, the rain seemed to cause a lot of flats, several people with multiple flats.  I think it is because the small sharp stones stick to a wet tire and get driven into the tire every time the tire goes around.  You might want to throw an extra tube in your bag or back pocket.
Make sure to put body glide on everything.  The wet clothes will increase the chaffing issue by a lot.

The bag for the shoes is the best advice!  There were a lot of bleeding ankles, achilles and arches on runners returning from the run course from the wet shoes rubbing.

Best of luck Adam, and we'll keep our fingers crossed that the rain holds off until after the race!

Ah Ken that's sounds pretty ugly!

About the rain jacket what kind of jacket would you recommend? Seems like an actual waterproof jacket would be a sweat fest but maybe a nylon pull over might be good....

Top picture is my Dad's side of the family. From L-R - My older brother (yes his in the military, in the Army), My niece, Me, Dad above me, my younger half-brother, and nephew, and then my Step mom in the back.  We're weird.   I have a BIG family...Stepfather's side, my mom's side, and my Dad's side. My new Husband was busy dancing with his HS friends to their songs of the day, so he didn't participate in the picture. :-)

Bottom one was taken by my uncle while my photographer was taking pictures of me outside.

It was a BEAUTIFUL wedding. My photographer took over 1300 pictures, so once she weeds through them and gets them all uploaded and I get a bunch of of them and upload it to my website, I'll give you the link and you can browse at your own pleasure if you love Weddings! :-)

Back to the grind and getting ready to train for my first Century of the year in a couple weeks. I'm not as prepared for it like I was last year, but I'm definitely stronger, so I'll be able to make it through without problems. Just need to get in perhaps a 70 miler if I can.

Yeah, My family is a hoot!  My husband does not do any of tri sports, although he's been starting to like the indoor bike. I'm trying to encourage him to keep going and go more often.

Thanks!

Nice Ken. We've got a quiet weekend here as well, unless you count the tons of bike/running on tap. I guess that's why these weeks are "peak". Time to test out my commitment to consistency in doing a brick run after a long bike and a spinning workout before a long run. Ugh.

Good luck Adam. I'm predicting cool and dry for Sunday...

HOPEFULLY, my last PT session Saturday.  I'm going to try and do some MTB'ing, although not sure I'll have the time.  Not sure about my swim this weekend either, since I got an inner ear infection stemming from allergy/sinus issues I always have!   Have to wait to see how it feels tomorrow before I go in the pool.

Good luck with the PT Brian, I got released from PT last week with a gym routine.  He couldn't release me to swim since that was a specific restriction from the doctor, but I have an appointment with the doc next week, hopefully the last.  I never thought I would look forward to swimming!

I hope your ear infection clears up!
