Sorry I haven't checked in.

I had a good 50k race on the weekend.  Fun time.

I debated posting this, so I decided not to, but if you are interested I go into detail in my log.  I went through a tame, but traumatic thing last night.  So I am dealing with the fallout and probably won't be checking in until it is dealt with.

I don't mean to be cryptic but I just didn't want to disappear for a couple weeks.

p90x stretch for 60 minutes prior to "run"

7 mile "run". Knee pain at mile 3.7 and mostly walked after that. It is a real drag. I basically have a misfiring of my lower leg and I get acute onset muscle weakness to the point I can't push off the ground. I see the sports chiro today. I am officially a weekend warrior with a running injury.

Burd - 2013-02-21 2:44 PM Pool day Cool . I do the shades because it's warm and sunny out, lol.  Figured I would remind all the folks freezing.  Did 700 yards total.  Managed to do a modified breast type stroke (have no idea what they are all called) and did a full 50 without stopping.  Monday starts the masters group.

Can always count on you to rub it in Alex!! haha

but seriously great swim! I think you will like masters, I loved it last year when I joined here, and I wish I could still attend but the cost jumped and since I am working shifts it just wasn't worth it. (that and they leave the workouts on the bulletin board throughout the week Wink)

So time to get back on the Horse! Really excited that the family is relatively healthy here (little one still has a pretty snotty nose). I am one week into my half-marathon plan, with no running on the books! Kind of a bummer, but I feel like with the base I have, and the fact that my only goal is to improve on my time from my Half last summer (2:38!!! :S) I should be good to go. I am really going to focus on going slow.... and form. I find that by doing this, I usually end up with better times, and feel much better.

Push-up challenge, is going to have to be restarted as well. Embarassed

I came across a couple of really cool videos, while lying in bed sick and feeling sorry for myself..

50 minute video on one of my personal hero's. Craig Alexander...amazing guy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5-ZaLmvDw4

30 minute video on Ironman Coeur d'Alene...really cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgzM5wVErb0

And finally my reward for getting back into training with a nice easy 42 laps yesterday. This beer was super tasty! Really could taste the depth the cognac brought to it!

I just wanted to let you know that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.  I spent the week resting up and my back does feel better.  I'm hoping to get on the bike tomorrow with the hope of picking up my training next week.

The problems with the job continue even when I'm on break... I'm not really looking forward to going back to work on Monday.

I've been drinking a lot of good beer.  Doing so has helped as I've gone through this rough patch.

It's supposed to snow tonight - hopefully, I'll be smarter with the shovel this time around.Wink

Start thinking about your goals for next week - I'll post the table tomorrow.

Prost!

Since I'm one of them with the knees, I second this with a do over.  If we do then my knee will reset to normal and everyone will feel better and be healed.  Great idea Tongue out

Completely blew off training and nutrition today, went with the wife to Amarillo and went shopping just the two of us.  Had lunch at Kabuki Japanese Steak House which I am sure was like 5,000 calories, went to World Market and got some new wine and beer to try out, that place is awesome you can make mixed packs of beer to try from all over!  Found a new water pack for my Bataan Death March and some different flavors of GU to try out.  Came home to a surprise visit from some friends we hadn't seen in a while back in town for a visit.  Overall a great day, and don't feel one bit bad about missing training or splurging on food! Back at it tomorrow!  Hope everyone has a great rest of your weekend!

I hate going out to dinner...I always eat like a pig.  It wasn't so much the portion size but my choice of food.  There wasn't much to choose from at the pizza place but was fun for my son and friends since they do a magic show.  Any tips on what to do in that position?

Apt with sports chiro went well. My self dx was bang on. Weak glutes, tight ITB caused pelvis to rotate and give knee problems. He seems hopeful that I should be running long sometime.

Lessons for me include:

there is a big need for strength exercises

there is a need for stretch/rolling

I need form/technique work

Good 41 mile bike this am with my tri buddy. Cold but beautiful.

For me, there's two ways to go about dining out:  (1) planning like a military special forces op, and (2) "aw, screw it."  The second one usually involves barbecue.

I'm very luck in that I have been consistent, and I haven't gained any significant weight since I started losing three years ago; when I eat out and splurge, it's just at the expense that my goal weight is pushed further away.  It's a one-step-forward, one-step-back day.

The other option is to plan, plan, plan.  Like today - we're going to the Olive Garden with my wife's family, so I've scoped out the menu and figured out what I'm going to have already - minestrone for 100 calories and 9g protein, and seafood bordetto for 480cal and 47g protein - in and out for less than 600 calories.  A breadstick might work it's way in, but oh well.

For many restaurants, you may have to substitute another restaurant's equivalent food - I tend to use Applebee's as a baseline, since they are almost an archetype and their food covers just about anything under the sun.

I tend to agree with Charles on this one you have the two options, either plan and stick to the plan, or say the heck with it and eat what you feel like.  Yesterday for me was a eat what I wanted and not worry about the consequences.

Generally, if I know I am going out of town or somewhere I am going to eat out, then I make a plan and figure out what restaurant to eat at, generally subway is my go to eat out place, good salads and sandwiches with not too bad of calorie count.

Great bike ride this morning got 20 miles in now going to get ready for the storm that is supposed to come in they are talking 8-12 inches of snow and 30-40 mph winds.  I know I know doesn't sound that bad for you Canadians, but for us down here in the desert, that will pretty much shut everything down and mean that we will be running on accidents on the interstate all night, hope we get the moisture, but hope everyone stays safe!

Justin, Bob, Nice work on the bike.  Bob, that knee will be a long slow process to recover, but you'll go quicker resting it more and staying off it.  Less is more.  Just listen to your body and adjust your expectations to what you "should" be doing to what you "can" do safely w/out agravating more.  Swim and bike more, run less.  When you do run, do it in a controlled situation where you can control the pace (easy pace) and distance.  Stay close to home so you can pull the plug if it's bothering you.  Usually with a nagging thing, I can run through it and it goes away after a couple of miles, but with a serious chronic injury like that, you don't want to re agravate it over and over, because it'll never get better.  Less is more.

Cynthia-  Yeah, I read that wrong.  I was like, Holy crud, that girl's going through some stuff!  Smile

I drew the shortest straw this weekend and had to help my old man out of a bad spot.  He had till the end of the month to get out of his rental, so I spent this weekend moving him and lots of junk off of the property he was on.  Good times.  Missed my long run because of it.  I'm going to make up a few extra miles this week on my shorter runs, and hit the 16 miler this next weekend.  I'm glad I put a few extra weeks into this marathon plan for padding.  I've used them all up at this point.

Working on the Rotater IPA from Widmere.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I put the cart before the horse. I had really good success with p90x last year. I was having some hip challenges from early sprint tris and it made it go away.

I listen to Endurance Planet podcast and I had asked the running coaches about my issue. They did not like the run more shorter runs and agree with what you are saying about not running. They even went to the point of saying they would rather me show up for my April race less fit but not injured instead of injured and fit. The challenge is that I am likely hurting things somewhat on the bike as well, just feeling it on the run.

I actually really miss my long runs. That is a crazy thing for a guy who did not like running at all a while back. Obviously this in the time to be smart, get stronger and heal. I am optimistic as well regarding my chiropractic therapy.

Hey everyone

This week has been a disaster, except for one good run, I want the do over too. Our house has had the flu, I have worked a crazy amount of hours, and had a bunch of family, no push ups. Well enough of the excuses for me,  I have to get back on track starting tomorrow!!!! Eating strict Paleo again to hit 230, starting over on the pushup challenge, and doing a make up run tomorrow. Hope everyone gets better or is better.

So, I tweaked by back again last night and woke up this morning back at square one.  So frustrating.  I'm going to baby it again this week and hope to get back on the wagon...

I still managed to enjoy a great day watching the Daytona 500.  So great.  It was amazing... So glad it's back.  I enjoyed a buch of good beers - mostly local... but extremely good.

Tomorrow, I turn 42... I hope I wake up feeling that age tomorowLaughing
