Kuma - 2013-02-03 10:30 AM I've had a recurring ache off and on in my left ear for a few weeks, and I think I can't put off going to see the doc about it any longer.   I'm guessing he's going to tell me that it's an ear infection from getting pool water in my ears, and put me on some antibiotics to clear it up.  I'm worried that he's also going to tell me to stay out of the pool while the meds are working.  Has anyone else dealt with this?  Is it definitely going to mean I'm out of the pool for awhile?

Actually sounds like swimmer's ear.  I would definitely get it checked out.  I've found that using some body oil and gently -- very gently -- rubbing it in your ears before swimming helps keep water out.

Thanks, all.  I remember getting earaches when I was swimming a lot as a kid, and the preventive treatment then was an eyedropper half full of rubbing alcohol into (and out of) each ear every night at bedtime.  I can't remember what the treatment was when I actually had swimmer's ear, though.

I have been breathing bilaterally, but never used earplugs before.  Kelly, by "body oil", do you mean something like Johnson's Baby Oil (do they even sell that anymore)?  Do you just put a little bit on your finger and gently coat the inside of your ear with it?

I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow and have it looked at.  As frustrating as it would be to be out of the pool now, it would be worse to have to do it later in the year (and for longer).

I use buriti oil from L'Occitaine (fancy girl-y oil) but baby oil would work.

I wouldn't do it.  I was pretty burned out after my HIM last season and really needed a break.  I also ended up getting sick.  My immune system took a big hit after the race.  I've only ever done the one HIM, so maybe some more experienced people in the group can offer their advice.

Rest day for me.  I'm still really sore from the strength training, so the rest is probably a good thing.  I slept for 9 hours last night.  Glorious!

It's a rest and test week, so I have another day off on Friday.  I'm thinking about scheduling a deep tissue massage.  The tight, sore muscle are really getting to me.

If it was a race I really wanted to do, I would probably do it, but go in with no expectation, and just have fun. (I'm not the brightest person though, so don't listen to me.)

I did an Oly one week out from a HIM, and was nervous about recovery. It ended up being fine, but you're talking about doing the opposite. If you race the HIM hard, probably not a good idea.

I think I need to do this - my hamstrings (both sides) yesterday were killing me at the trail race. I felt great other wise, but my stupid hamstrings were really limiting me on the uphills (which I walked, but even walking was horrible). There's got to be more to my pain than just the lower back stuff. I just want it to go away!!!

Back to Whole30 for me today, I feel like crap today. At the race yesterday they had a cookie mobile, free cookies, lots of free cookies for all! Stupid cookie mobile!!! Yell

Feeling puffy & bloated again, so I'm back to eating the good stuff again.

So I am pretty sure I am the only person to eat only meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts for 30 days with absolutely no cheating and gain a pound. Sort of bummed about that, but I feel good otherwise so going to continue to stick it out. I might start back with my almond milk again instead of coconut milk in my coffee though. Not sure I need the extra fat there. Swam and weights this morning are done. Happy Monday everyone!

If you do an HIM right it might be the most painful distance out there.

After my first HIM last year I did 20 minutes on the elliptal slow on Sunday (Saturday event). Monday I rode the trainder for 30 slow and swam for 20 slow. Tuesday I did a Z1 half hour ride and a two mile recovery run. On Wednesday my legs felt awesome. I went outside on the bike and did a 15 minute warm up and then just felt too good not to push it. For 11 glorious minutes I was at race pace and then it all came crashing down. I pretty much spent the next 11 weeks until my next HIM fighting fatigue. Don't make the same mistake. After my second HIM I took three full weeks off before training again. When I do my first this year I'll take a week off.

1:05 on the trainer followed by a 6 mile run this morning.

Hello everyone! Busy weekend it seems. So, I think it was Matt that has the ear issues. What works for me is dropping a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol in them after a swim. I haven't had any issues doing that up to this point.

Jen/Kelly thanks for the recommendations on the band. Bicycle tube, really? I would feel very redneckish, of course that wouldn't be to bad considering I am form MS originally haha!

2000 in the pool this morning with drills, lots of drills. I now wish I would have learned to swim earlier in life...but Nooo, I had to do normal sports like baseball, football, and basketball. The good thing is I get to see improvements more in my old age

Keep up the good work everyone!

Scott, as far a tri clubs goes...There are several around here and I have looked into all of them. The one I settled on was really my best option. They have several group get togethers. They do lots of local races together. They also have lots of group workout options at different times. Flexibility is what it came down for me. Have the extra options to choose the different group workout sessions. Only problem now is I don't work near where they do. So I may have to change teams to something in DC where I work now.

I've been doing the deep tissue massage once a month, around my recovery week, and it's now the highlight of my month! I find it really does help rest the muscles for the following three weeks of pushing it. I strongly recommend it.

I usually get to 70.3s the day before and leave the afternoon of the race if driving.  If the race is farther away I get there earlier (for Galveston I'll be flying on Friday, the race is on Sunday and I'll be flying home on Monday).

For your first one, I would recommend more time.   You don't want to feel rushed.

Thanks! It is just under 5 hours from my in-laws house where we will be dropping off the kids, if that is what we end up doing or 8-9 from our house to there. I am leaning towards the drive from NC instead of VA.

Agree, agree, agree.  For my first HIM we drove to Austin Saturday and went straight to bike/athlete check in, walked around the expo for like 10 minutes, went to dinner, and went to the hotel to go to sleep.  It sucked.  Well it doesn't help the race is in the ugly part of Austin, but that is another discussion all together.

Have you been to Augusta?  Unless you can get past the very tall shrubs encircling Augusta National (which is closed from Mid-April to October) it is essentially brown grass and strip malls.

Kelly is right unfortunately. If you have time you would be better off to go to downtown Savannah, GA. Although I would love to see Augusta National....

I'll have to see if I can kind my pictures from the Masters practice days (you can take pictures during the practiec days on Mon-Wed but not once the tourney begins on Thursday) -- Augusta National is beautiful and the beer comes in comemerative cups and is $1.50 / beer.

Smile Great, you'll like the course.

For Augusta I drove over the day before and left the day of. But I'm closer. (I was also sick as a dog after, so staying over would have been a better option for me.)
