kidtri33 - 2013-02-04 12:48 PM It is official- Augusta here I come!!!Laughing Now time for hotel reservations. How early should I get there? Two days early? Do you guys usually leave right after a 70.3 to go home or stay the night?

I usually get to 70.3s the day before and leave the afternoon of the race if driving.  If the race is farther away I get there earlier (for Galveston I'll be flying on Friday, the race is on Sunday and I'll be flying home on Monday).

For your first one, I would recommend more time.   You don't want to feel rushed.

Agree, agree, agree.  For my first HIM we drove to Austin Saturday and went straight to bike/athlete check in, walked around the expo for like 10 minutes, went to dinner, and went to the hotel to go to sleep.  It sucked.  Well it doesn't help the race is in the ugly part of Austin, but that is another discussion all together.

Have you been to Augusta?  Unless you can get past the very tall shrubs encircling Augusta National (which is closed from Mid-April to October) it is essentially brown grass and strip malls.

Nooooooooo.  That totally blows my mental image of Augusta.

Yah, Augusta is not all that exciting...but it's a great venue for a 70.3.

I need some advice. The Lobsterman Tri (Oly) registration has opened up. It is a week after my HIM in September. I would like to do it but have not idea if I will be recovered. What do people thnk/what has your experience been?

If you do an HIM right it might be the most painful distance out there.

Um...so I'm not sure if this a pro or a con against doing the Lobsterman

Take it how you wish.  LOL.  I know I wouldn't be recovered enough to do an Oly the week after a HIM.  I also don't like to race just to do the race though.

DDVMM - 2013-02-04 8:23 AM So I am pretty sure I am the only person to eat only meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts for 30 days with absolutely no cheating and gain a pound. Sort of bummed about that, but I feel good otherwise so going to continue to stick it out. I might start back with my almond milk again instead of coconut milk in my coffee though. Not sure I need the extra fat there. Swam and weights this morning are done. Happy Monday everyone!

No, you're not the only one.  My weight is trending upwards, and it sucks.  I've really struggled with this over the last 15 months, and I have to believe that as I'm hitting my mid-30s it's just getting harder to lose weight.  I'm sure my metabolism is changing.  I think it's a struggle for most women over the age of 30, particularly if you have had children.  I would eat the way that makes you feel good, Michele, and then allows for some indulgences (whatever that may be for you).

I was warming up some leftover shrimp, yams, and coconut milk soup this morning for breakfast, and my husband came downstairs and asked me what I was making.  When he heard what I was having he said that it sounded really gross.  He said I was the only person he knows who would be eating that crap for breakfast.  LOL

He thinks that the huge bowl of grapes before bed isn't helping with my weight loss.  Some people eat ice cream, and I can't have grapes???  WTH.

Recovery ride and core work this morning.  The recovery ride has to be my least favorite workout.  It almost feels as if I'm wasting my time.  I know that's not the case, but it feels that way.

Oh, yeah.......WE SOLD OUR HOUSE!

Jen - congrats on the house sale!

My son was not impressed with me eating lamb for breakfast. He said the house smelled like feet.

I bought a juicer and have been trying a variety of fruits and veggies in the machine - lastnight I fell back on the standard apples, carrots, and beets - problem being it was about an hour before bed.  I was wired - did situps, pushups, squats, planks, etc - note to self - no juice before bed!!!

As everyone tells me it takes time, but there are still times, if I have more than 3 bike days in a row where I am totally raw (so mine is not sit bone related, but I am in aeros).  Lot of chamois cream!  Unfortunately, the adamo saddles are hard on the trainer, but great on the road.  Everyone tells me I need to try different saddles, but I have tried ton ... this is the lessor of the evil saddles.

Get in your aero bars and your sit bones won't hurt so much.  If there is chafing, tie the nose together tightly with some twist ties.

Brevile Juice Fountain - I like it.  Seems like it's your everyday type juicer.  It works well with most things.  The leafy veggies do not yield much juice and stuff like kale, celery, and ginger have a killer powerful taste.  I like the apple juice most.  It is really easy to clean, and is powerful.  I've done pineapple with the skin on it, beets, whole pears, apples, carrots without cutting off stalks, stems, or removed the seeds.  It doesn't work well with oranges or bananas though.

We got the Breville juicer for Christmas, and we use it almost daily.  Beet + carrot + celery + lemon.....best combo ever.  My husband makes it before bed, and I drink it for a late morning snack.  I love the green machine juice too.

I'd juice but the amount of raw product you put in for a cup of juice is insane.

I agree, but still treat myself to about 2 quarts once a week.  I think I figured it out to be about $19 a gallon (gallon = 7.8 pounds, 1 pound of apples is about $1.19 and yields about a 1/2 of juice, the rest is shot out the back.)

I make 99.9% of our meals and my kids don't eat school lunches (packed lunches), so I spend the majority of my time in the kitchen.  LOL  The most important kitchen item for me is the food processor.  I use it at least once a day (if not twice).

I read a lot.  I thought I'd never buy a kindle or ipad, as I really do like real books.  I like bending the spine, underlining things of meaning, etc.  I like the smell of paper.  My mother bought me a kindle for Christmas, and I hate to admit that I love it.  It's so easy to take with me. I'm in the car for a huge chunk of day as I drive my kids all around, and it's nice to be able to pull the kindle out of my purse.

**edited to add:  I listed more than 1 toy I couldn't live without, so I deleted the tri stuff

I want to start using coconut water with a splash of juice during my longer/intense training sessions (vs. the sports drink).  Do I need to add anything to it or is it good as is?

I'm also going to experiment with homemade energy bars/balls.  I don't really like the gluten-free options that I'm seeing out there.  I saw a recipe for these balls made of dates, nuts, and coconut shreds.  I think I'm going to use these in place of the bars.  Anyone tried this?

Kale is the worst.  LOL  You get an ounce of juice per bunch of kale.  My husband goes to the farmer's market where the produce is cheaper.  It's pretty ripe so needs to be used quickly.

Been crazy at work again.  Haven't been posting

Jen - I hear you on the recovery rides on the trainer.  This morning was an 1:20 at 110 HR, 13mph pace, and it was extremely painful to get through that.  I've been watching Breaking Bad series on Netflix, which helps.

Good Morning! I have a 1hr z1/z2 run to do later today. I was going to do this morning but figured it was better to help the wife get packed and out the house so she could go to NC to visit. She is taking the little guy so that leaves me with the bigs to corral and keep focused. Ahh teenagers...

Jen, Congrats on selling the house I am sure getting rid of that stress will help!

I know this may sound crazy but the one thing I don't think I could do without is my insulated camelbak bottle. When I have it I always drink plenty of fluids during the day. The days I forget it I don't do so well with my fluid intake. It amazes me how much I depend on it for fluid intake. I love the insulation and that it doesn't sweat. I used to carry around a nalgen all the time but hated that it would sweat.

Couple of thoughts:

1.  Coconut water is pretty low calorie / low carbohydrate.  Yes it has electrolytes, but you also need carbohydrates (especially for an Ironman).

2. Balls made of dates, nuts, and coconut shreds are going to be very high in fat and include quite a bit of fiber.  The goal of nutrition while training / racing is to provide needed carbohydrates and electrolytes and not upset your stomach.  Fat and fiber will upset your stomach.  While it may feel ok on the bike, its not going to feel ok on the run.

1. On the coconut water, why?  It's like 46 cals and 9 grams of carbs per serving.  You need more calories and more carbs to fuel long workouts.  For intense workouts you use vastly more carbs than long/slow workouts so this definitely would pose a problem.  Coconut water is great to take for recovery with a real food meal so you replace the electrolytes.  That's about it IMO.

2.  Bars.  Homemade is great as a snack.  As Kelly said there is far too much fiber to use as a trainng tool.  You will have to go #2 at a very inopportune time.  The fat thing can be debated.  You could train your system to do long slow (low intensity) workouts fueled off of fat, but that takes a LONG time to make that work.

I get you're looking to go as natural as possible, but you may need to think about making compromises in the times around your workouts and then figure out ways to hit your macros for the rest of the day with organic/natural options.   Just my $.02.

My post workout drink I use half coconut water and half almond milk with protein powder and blueberries most of the time.
