I had a bit of a scare this morning.  Still not sure of the total scope.  I was at work early (ran on the tready in the office gym) when a friend called to tell me there was heavy smoke in my neighborhood.  I live in a small development of 80 townhomes. I took off for home and when I got there found the place overrun with firetrucks and emergency vehicles.  There was a bad fire in one of the units.  Total loss.  Fortunately everyone got out.  It was in the building next to mine.  Each bldg has 5 units.  It is 3 units away from mine.  Smoke is horrible.  The whole thing still has me a bit shaken.  More later.

So my day started off with a "proposal" sent to my boss and my director asking for permission to be gone from June 3rd to the July 4th weekend and ride my bike with my buddy and pastor from Mobile, AL to Buffalo, NY on the Underground Railroad.

If it gets approved I will provide a lot more detail to you guys.  Should be interesting!

kcarroll - 2010-02-12 4:39 PM Greetings Ghouls.  Well, I'm home and boy are things a mess.  The fire actually started 2 units down from me.  There is nothing left inside, but at least for now they think structural damage is minimal.  No word on the cause yet.  The other units in the building have severe smoke and water damage and the roof will have to be replaced.  Initial estimates are that none of the 4 will be liveable for at least 6 months, maybe 9.  One of the couples that has a unit in the building is quite elderly and the wife has alzheimers.  My heart goes out to them.  Thankfully, and most importantly, everyone got out.

My house has a *tinge* of smoke odor, but nothing terrible.  The biggest hassle is I can't get in my driveway.  Not just with my car, but even on foot is a challenge.  The snow plows didn't plow very wide and the generator trucks and smoke/water damage trucks have it totally blocked. I suspect I might have to forego the garage quite a bit in the next several months if I don't want to get blocked in.  Hardly worth griping about in the greater scheme of things.  It is going to be a hassle and get old though.  This is a quiet community and the thought of living next door to 6-9 months of construction is not appealing.  Oh well.  It is what it is. 

I think my first glass of wine is fast approaching.  Notice I said first.  There will be a second. Maybe a third.

Kim, I didn't want you to drink alone so I had some wine with you last night. We got a good 5 inches of snow. Quite the surprise. It was/ is the perfect kind. light an fluffy with no wind. it is all over the trees but not weighing them down like the last snows we got. No broken branches or trees.

Going to paint and get on the drainer today. I have been slack on workouts this week but time to get on the ball.

I have the dogs ready to let loose to hunt out our missing Ghouls.

Hey Kim, I'm very sorry to hear about the situation of your neighbors. I'm just glad that nobody was hurt. Homes can be rebuilt, but at least there was no major tragedy. Any word on where these folks will be able to stay?
