It looks like you had over 20 hours in last week? Awesome training!

I see you have a marathon coming up, is that new?

Yeh Ken, I'm hitting every workout in the plan like it's my job. If things don't go my way in AZ, it wont be because i flaked out in the home stretch... I signed up for this marathon back in the spring, but I'm not "racing" it like i should a road race. Gonna treat it like a training run and train through it. I'm going to do it with my brother-in-law and his pace group. I do have a goal to beat my one marathon time from 1999 of 4:28:40 but if i can hang with his 4:25 pace group that will work. It is also an excuse for me to go to Atlantic City and shoot some craps :-)

I registered for the first marathon that I plan to treat with the seriousness it deserves on May 5, 2013 in Long Branch, NJ. I going to follow a 18 week plan that will start on 1/1/13. Must be good kharma.

Does anyone know if  Ironman Florida 70.3 sells out before the race and if so how fast?  Really thinking this may be the "big one" for next year.  I was seriously considering one in CA but it is too early (would have to take kids out of school) and if I am flying to lower 48 anyway may as well go as far as possible!

started taper today for this weekends HM - light yoga. What really stinks is it is supposed to be a beautiful week here finally (AKA SUN!) and I won't be able to get any long rides in

Is that the one in Haines City Fl or Panama City?  I am going to do the one in Haines City as my in-laws live there.  Here is the website.  I found out last March that it had moved from Disney to Haines City and was going to enter it but was side tracked by the shoulder injury.  So last year it was still open in March and it was known that Lance was planning on racing in it.

I am probably going to register sometime in the next couple of weeks just because I want to have that secured before I spend on the non-refundables like airplane tickets, although we have discussed driving down so the dog can come.

I hope you decide to do that one Robin, it isn't far from Disney and most of the convenient places to stay are up towards the tourist attractions, which is the only downside to where the race is (lack of hotels).

The one by Haines City on May 19th. Good to know that I have a little time to decide before I register. How is the weather that time of year?  Worried about doing any long distance tri in the lower states as max temps this summer was low 60's here.

I would like to tell you it won't be warm, but I believe the normal temps that time of year are in the 80's.  Just do your bike training in front of the heater and you will be fine.  I find when I do races in Florida that getting there a couple days prior and getting some running in helps with the acclimation.

ETA: I just looked for the last 3 years and it looks like it was in the 80's all 3 years with 2011 being a bit overcast.

I hope you decide to do it!

I did the race last May.  It definately wasn't what I was expecting.  I thought with the race being in Fla that it would be flat.  WRONG!  There was a severe drought in Fla and they changed the swim to a M shaped course.  I swam well and enjoyed the swim.  The first 30 miles of the bike were nice.  I guess it must have a little downhill and had some tailwind.  The rest of the race was very tuff on me.  The last part of the bike was mainly uphill and had lots of headwind.  By the time I got to the run my quads were cramping very badly.  On the run you come out of transition and run beside the lake and then out onto the streets.  When you take a right on the first street, you are meet with a long, steep(by my standards) hill.  And the best part is, you get to see that hill 3 times.  It got very hot on the run.  It got in the low 90s and the humidity was very high.  It was my first HIM and my time was terrible.  I was almost a hour faster in Augusta.  Because I did so poorly at the race, I hired a coach and my training is much better.  I thought the venue was very nice.  I'm doing IMTX this May or I would be going back for revenge.  I will be back in 2014 to get even with the course.  Just be prepared for some hills and heat.

Thanks Ken and Wesley for the info!  most of my early training will have to be indoors - so maybe I can adjust the temp.  Hills shouldn't be a problem as there are plenty here to train on, once I can get out. I just need to take the plunge and decide to do it! My parents live in TN, so I also need to decide whether kids go with me to race or just husband.

I hope everyone is having a great week!

We made a family vacation out of it and it was great.  The evening after the race, they drug me all around the majic kingdom.  And then after your first HIM, I think everyone should have to wake up early and go have breakfast with Mickey.  It probably actually help me work out some soreness.  If it's possible, I would definately recommend taking the family.

I was just noticing the return of your Steelers logo avatar.  I hope you have a little better luck this year but not too much.  Lol   I have a 100 mile ride tomorrow and then an 18 mile run on Saturday.  After that, I'll start backing it done and next thing you know it will be Nov. 3rd.

Sounds like a busy weekend on your feet Wesley!!  It will feel good to get it done I'm sure!

The avatar change didn't help my Steelers last night.  I don't know which pushed my blood pressure higher last night, watching the game or the debate.

I've been a lot quieter in real life than in the boards.  Because my head is REELING with triathlon/IM thoughts constantly, I've pretty much hid from people, lest they think me nuts and no fun at all...

So, to keep my mind off of AZ, I've been focusing on what next year looks like. Out of the frying pan, into the fire!  Here's the outline for next year:

Goal post races-

  • 5/2013 - NJ Marathon (Flat course along the coast)
  • 7/2013 - Escarpment Trail Run if they take me, only 200 entries (18 mile point to point billy goat trail run with almost 10,000ft of gain).  This thing is something.  A guy i swim with runs a 1:30 HM and this "run" took him 4:3x.
  • 9/2013 - Survival of the Shawangunks, only 150 entries.  This is a point to point 8 leg tri bike/run/swim/run/swim/run/swim/run, or something like that.

You might notice that there is nothing iron distance in there.  That is ALWAYS subject to change, but at this point I am not looking to commit to 30 weeks of training a certain way, and need to mix it up.  I also plan to race every sprint and OLY that shows up in my area.

Happy training (and Tapering) folks!

Finished my HM today in 2:14 (PR by 4') - pretty stoked, but can't walk now! There was a HUGE 1/2 mile at the very end that crushed me.  Now I have to drive 2 1/2 hours to meet family at a cabin we reserved months ago. Afraid I may be a party pooper tonight!

I will get a RR up tomorrow or Monday.

For anyone who has done a 140.6, how long did you taper?  And how much did your volume go down during taper?  Next week I have a 4300 yd swim,1 hr ride,11 mile run and then a 56 mile ride.  The next week I have a 11 mile run, 2 - 4300 yd swims, 2 hour ride and a 56 mile ride.  Not that I'm doubting my coach because he has been great but I thought the taper would be a little less volume.  Race week is basically just real easy stuff.  Mainly just curious about other people's taper?

That seems about right if I remember correctly.  Its about half of your longest ride.  If he has done a good job with your plan the taper shouldn't be a dramatic drop in volume but more of a gradual drop.  2 biggest reasons to have more than that is over training or injury.  As far as the swimming, I did my longest swim the week before the race.  Race week for these usually provides a bigger drop even if the coach doesn't put it in the schedule, just due to the logistics of getting to one of these races.

Ken, I'm still looking hard at that race, but I'm waiting until Spring to commit. I'm thinking the half distance might be best for 2013, unless I feel my S/B/R fitness can get me through without a giant time commitment. By August, I'll probably be tired of all the running and ready for S/B. Also, I'm as fickle as a $0.10 knife...

Wesley- what Ken said, except I've never actually done it. I'm building the swim right up until IMAZ. First, because the recovery is pretty painless. Also, I know you are in a different class in swimming, but i seem to lose swim fitness/form very quickly if i take time off.
