I forgot to put this in my RR but after I did the cupcake hand-off and the beer station stop I was walking back to the finish area and an older guy running the full marathon pulled up beside me and asked if he could walk with me.

He was really bummed because he had to walk the last 3 or so miles and was hoping to PR that race but his legs were just telling him no.

We probably walked for about a mile and he was telling me about all his racing and training. He does 6-10 marathons a year and his longest long run in training is 32 miles! Surprised

I didn't really think it was my place to point out that perhaps maybe that was why he was walking. I was shocked, confused and impressed all at once lol.

Yikes!!!  Man, when I trained for my one and only marathon, I didn't go further than 22 miles.  I can't imagine doing 10 more.  If you did 10 a year, wouldn't you just be recovering and tapering between them???

I guess that keeps things pretty straight forward. He said he would use other marathons as training runs and then tack on the extra miles after the marathon.

When I asked him if he was interested in ultra-marathonning he looked at me like I was the crazy one.

LOL people.

SmileSmileSmile I'm going with 3 though I feel like 2.  I figure the day will only get better it usually does.  Have a little faith in people - I always assume the worst and they will let me down, but they have historically always come through so I need to have faith in them right?

45mins on the drainer last night - was good and sweaty.  Not great tempo but it was t.i.t.s and that's what I wanted.  Hope to do the same or an hour tonight.  I find the first 45 the hardest.

Got some new training session from Macca!!!!  Yeah i joined his training group thing - don't want the guy to run out of money.  There are 12 sessions - 4 in each discipline, gonna try the drainer one tonight, it's an hour - pretty much intervals - 3mins all out, 3mins spin.  Not rocket science really!

Today i have to work at our warehouse putting price stickers on gift packs because our factory in China forgot!  haha!  It's me and my colleague Samantha and we always have great fun together.  Only issue is it's freezing and dirty down there - oh well - AND I won't be able to be on BT all day like I do in the office!  Make sure my phone is charged up I can get on there!

Have a happy Wednesday Manatees - I am sure I have turned the corner in this monthly depression thing and on the upward climb to happiness again - by Friday please!

Love you all.

Hello POD,

I need some advice, or at least a warm and fuzzy Smile  I signed up for a full on November 18th so in my infinite wisdom I thought I'd just slide into an 18 week marathon traninig program somewhere around week 11 or 12.  So the week after my HIM, I ran 10 miles for the "long" run.  Then this past Sunday I ran 13.  I was thinking this week I'd run 16, then have back to back weekends with 20 milers.  Duh, when I finally looked at one of Higdon's plans those long runs are not back to back.

So here I am in week 13, the plan has 5 miles scheduled for tonight which I will do but 20 is scheduled for Sunday.  My goal pace for this half a$$ trained marathon is 8:30 and my HIM pace after a hilly-a$$ bike course was 8:50.  Too optimistic?  Keep in mind that was 3 hours, forty minutes after my swim start (fatigue setting in etc.) so I think it's doable.  If I average 8:30 pace I'll finish around 3:42 and change.  In my first marathon April 2011, I went out at 8:15-8:18 pace and hit the wall at mile 19 ish, finished in 3:47.

Remaining Higdon plan below, whaddya think, just follow remaining plan see where that lands me?

Also, for the 20 milers, run at 9:00 to 9:15 pace, trying to avoid any kind of injury etc.  My logs are up to date etc.

Suggestions welcome!

Edit:  I did not do the week 11 workout, that's just for reference.  I did do the week 12 long run.

Oh good, I wasn't going to butt in until you ask, and since you are asking!

What was your training like for your 3:47 marathon? Why do you suppose you hit the wall?

It looks like you ran less than 80 miles last month, is that correct?

You are a great runner. I personally just think that  time goals are extremely arbitrary and chasing time goals when you haven't put in consistent training is just silly.

From the facts I have on hand (if they are correct), I think you can go out there and run a marathon. In fact, I think you can go out there and run a pretty solid marathon but why put the stress of a certain time on yourself? Literally I am asking you why, not being snotty. Is it to prove something? Is it a long time goal? Or is it simply because that is the time you think you can run?

*Also, I am not sure if it was a question or not but in my experience, back to back 20 milers are not the norm.

bcraht - 2012-10-09 11:45 AM So I am doing this 10km night run with my nephew this weekend.  When I first asked him if he wanted to do it with me, I figured we would do the 5km (he is 9 years old).  Nope, he wanted to do the 10k.  So I said fine, but he had to train.  He does cross country with school, but I think that is only a couple km.  Well, in order to train, Mommy would have to run with him, as he is too young to run alone.  So last night at dinner my SIL asked if it would be ok if she ran the race with us!  (She really doesn't like running, so this is quite a big deal!).  So now, we will all 3 be out there with our glow in the dark shirts and head lamps!  I am so excited

Oh, that sounds like so much fun! I love running at night. I would love to do a night run.

I am sick. Again. Not Yanti-sick, thankfully, but annoying sick, nonetheless (just a cold). I was thinking about running or jumping on the trainer today, but I decided that little could be gained. I'm going to give myself a two day rest. That hardly ever happens! Oh, well.

I completed the paperwork the dean wanted; sent it to her on Saturday. This morning she emailed me to say that everything looked good, so she sent my material on to the Dean. Yippee!

This is SOOOO exciting!!! I am sorry you are sick but that is some amazing news!!! Keep us updated!!!

It's looking pretty good. My friend who works there had a meeting with the Dean about something else today, and he said the Dean brought me up. (woot!) The Dean told my friend that the department really wants me, so now it's just a matter of figuring out if the administration thinks I'm a good fit. I found a book that the faculty wrote, so I have started reading it today. I started with the English department essay, and it's actually really good.

*Also, I am not sure if it was a question or not but in my experience, back to back 20 milers are not the norm.

Well, I'm a silly person so the time goal certainly matches my personality Smile  The 8:30 pace is sort of arbitrary.  The first marathon I went out at 8:15 pace so this time I thought I would go out slower and see what happens.  If I was in "equal" condition as I was last year, does running 15 seconds slower make the wall come later?  I just feel I'm in better overall condition this time around even though I'm not currently following a true marathon training plan.  But even on the last one, I didn't follow that plan to the tee either.  The ONE difference between now and then is that I plan on running 5 times a week during these last 6 weeks as opposed to 3-4 times a week like the last time.  Is that too little too late?  Don't know.

Totally agree on the timing thing though, I don't have anything to prove but I feel the need to challenge myself at least a bit, not just go jog a 5 hour marathon etc.  But I feel the need to decide on a pace, so what shall it be?  That is the question of the day.  Most training plans have you run at "pace" so it's decided upon early on.

Maybe after this weekend's 20 miler I'll rethink this once again Tongue out

Oh, and when it comes to butt in, I totally welcome any manatee to do so, that's what we're here for right?  I don't take things personnally.

Alright then, Silly peanut butter. Set your goals but don't be afraid to adjust accordingly as you go. You have speed in you. I don't think that's what needs focus. So keep up your frequency as planned and I absolutely think 6 weeks will make a difference, it's not too late. Try not to be tempted to push too hard in the long runs out of "curiosity" if you know what I'm saying. You can push the pace in your short runs if you feel you can do so without injury or without negatively impacting your next workout. The numbers will fall where they will

Wow could I be more tired!?  All that emotion takes it out of mr - feel better this afternoon an extra smile certainly warranted

45 mins on the drainer last night while Artemis performed gymnastics around me - very funny and boy can she chatter on about nothing!

I hope to get an hour in tonight too, but not too worried either way.  Squad Thursday, Long run Friday - etc, we know the drill!

Hope all the sickly ones on here are feeling better

Yum piglets.....

I fancy a nice cruisy run watching piglets - Friday I think, after work head to the beach and go for a nice run - don't measure time or distance, just go until it gets dark.  That's the plan.

Tonight riding with macca - mmm super piglet.

Swimming things I have learned.

1. Breathing by 5s evens out my stroke.  I get into more of a rhythm.

2. Straight arm dog paddle, while effective, sucks.

3. I hate quitting on a set midway.  (Happens sometimes when the other lane is much faster and are moving on).  It's like it (the rest of the set) is sitting there taunting me.

4.  Master swim (or other swim group) is really good for getting someone who really didn't enjoy swimming (me!) to enjoy swimming.

5.  Kickboards are better used as pull buoys.  I like doing kick sets on my back, arms outstretched.

I don't know if any of you guys read Competitor magazine but check out page 66 if you do. It's all about the running club I joined.

And speaking of, my coach called me to congratulate me on my race. He was really excited with my progress in the short time I have been with the group and expressed a lot of confidence in my future. Also, I get an easy workout tonight. Yessssssssssssssssssssssss!

Hi pod!

Sorry I have been a bit AWOL but between Tennessee, my birthday last week and DC for my brother's wedding it has been a bit of a mess.  Got back from DC late Monday and just kind of vegged yesterday and got some work on my bike class power points done, those can suck hours out of your day without you noticing!  Today though I went and got my self my new bike, I was able to get them to knock over $500 off of the asking price as well:

Dannnng breathing 5s seems really long ...

That's what I was thinking. I like oxygen too much to go that long without breathing!

Now I need all the gear Laughing

Sweet ride, congrats!

I'll have to see if I can find the magazine. Congrats on being the teacher's pet
