Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oooh- from this weekend- I had a giggle... watching my dog play tug with Lexi-loo (dog I was sitting) and Lex gets smart and sits herself down on the doggie bed and lets Linkin pull her across the floor. Not sure if you can picture it...but pretty darn funny. That one is making me giggle! I'm still not sure what to give up/do for lent. I have till tomorrow, right? |

I'm going to cradle it tonight, pour it into a beautifully chilled glass and whisper sweet nothings to it. Then I'm going to drink it one more time and say, "Goodbye, my love. You're just no good for me. And I have to let you go." That gives me a cushion of three practice days before the no-sugar challenge begins Sunday. The lime water is treating me pretty good. ![]() Oh boy!!! Good-luck with that... I went off diet dew 4 years ago, I was a 7 a dayer....yikes! I haven't had one since. I am impressed!!! How did you not get lulled back by her sweet promises? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My calves are cursed!!! I want to exchange them IMMEDIATELY for a brand new pair. The deep pain in my left calf is back - that was the precursor when I tore my plantar fascia in October. But so far no heel pain on that foot. But now, I've developed heel pain on the right foot as well. I'd understand if I were running, but I've only done a tiny bit of minimal jogging at a slow pace. I want to cry! Does the elliptical work the calves a lot? I couldn't imagine that's what did it yesterday, but perhaps ... I ordered a bunch of home therapy stuff because if I don't get this fixed, I'm going to go insane. I'm not too proud to walk the entire "run" portion of a triathlon, but if I can't even walk for 30 minutes, then there go my sprint tris, much less an Olympic. I'm also going to try to find a sports massagist. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() whew...it was a late one but the reports are all filed away...now for the editing and then the much anticipated parent/teacher conferences...oh well the big stress is done and I get to go swimming tonight...that is if I can stay awake. Alyssa-forgot to mention how cute your little Henry is. Hope he is feeling better and not quite so grumpy. Susie-way to resist the doughnuts...another vice but more easily avoidable than chips and ice cream which can be stored in the house. Calgary is too dry that bread products dry up so quickly. Great idea for adding the lime to the bottle (though a wide mouth might be better next time- lol). I know that my hubby often craves the fizz more than the sugar and so he drinks soda water and sometimes just adds some lemon juice or fruit juice to it. I have never been a huge pop drinker (I love how Canadians call it pop and our friends to the South call it soda). Love the slogan for the shirts....thanks for reviving that thought, Amy! Love that you are feeling so great these days! Dan- did you decide on your new wheels yet? When do you get the Bianchi? Thanks for posting the TI bits...yep long term goal but I feel very fortunate that our swim tri coach was once a national level swimmer so she has changed my stroke sooooooo much for the better already. To think that it used to take me an hour to get through 1000m- and that was just in September. Nicole- I should ask more about how you use your Garmin 305- I have one too but I feel like you are taking way more advantage of it than me. I could learn a lot from you if you have a moment or two to share. Julie- how is that knee feeling these days? Are you out running on it? Have you given up on the PT? Hope you all have a fantastic night! |

I too am curious about your shoes- were you properly fitted by a running store? My first and only bout with plantar fascitis was the result of incorrect shoes. I then went on to get orthotics and properly fitted, had a few sessions of accupuncture and have had no issues since. Do rest and ice. Consider a physio or even research to see if there is an Active Release Practitioner in your area (www.activerelease.com) There are RMT, PT, and chiropractors that do this and I swear by it. My chiro works on a lot of triathletes so he recognizes trouble spots and he has been a crucial part of me staying injury free. I am rarely adjusted by him- mostly I go for ART. keep us up to date and do try to stay to the swimming and low impact.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, and happy Tuesday evening! I'm just back from my second run of the day -- ran with Dan tonight, who didn't torture me because I'm racing on Sunday. But we did talk about future torture sessions -- actually, he did most of the talking while I panted and tried to answer him. I'd call that a tempo run, wouldn't you? I've been thinking about all of your comments about giving up something for Lent. There is a lieutenant at work who gives me such a hard time for drinking diet pepsi. She's on a big health kick, and she loves to tease me. Now I only drink one a day, and I've cut back to smaller bottles too. But I think maybe it might be time to give this a try. So that's what I'm going to do -- give up dp for Lent. Susie, I definitely agree with the shoe examination comments coming your way. How old are they, and do you have a lot of miles on them? As soon as I start to feel anything in my feet or knees, I dig out a new pair of shoes (yes, I buy several pair at a time). If the pain goes away, the old shoes get tossed. If it doesn't, then I know it's not the shoes and something else instead. Have a great evening everyone -- I'm going to go fix some dinner and relax watching "Biggest Loser". I LOVE that show, it's amazing how much weight they lose! |

Julie- how is that knee feeling these days? Are you out running on it? Have you given up on the PT? woo hoo...grading is done!!!! do you have a good class? have you had to fail anyone? SOOOO much better...trying to not push the running too much because I want to guarantee that it is truly gone and I do not end up injuring it again! but after the last few runs...it was fine! so, no PT at this time.

I could learn a lot from you if you have a moment or two to share. I'm definitely no expert. I use my Forerunner during my runs and during my rides. On runs I actively monitor distance, time, pace, and average pace and I generally run by pace. On rides I actively monitor distance, time, speed, and cadence and I generally ride by speed. I also record heart rate but I only look at that after I'm done. I'm on a Mac and use a piece of software called Ascent to look at my data. One of the things I like about it is it shows the trace and map of the activity with a color overlay of my heart rate. I then try to mentally compare my perceived effort with my heart rate. That's about all I know. |

To think that it used to take me an hour to get through 1000m- and that was just in September. I have decided on the Bianchi with the Shimano 105 components. I need to check with the bike shop to see when it will appear. It could be as late as April depending on the factory. The other option he was considering was him upgrading an in stock model with Tiagra. It would be a little more expensive, but quicker. From a previous post of yours detailing the drills you're doing, sounds like there are some TI components involved. And, having someone else watch/critique you real time is fantastic... especially someone with that level of expertise. I'm still adjusting my stroke little by little and like to believe I am on the right path.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the comments, everyone, but I've been there, done that with plantar fasciitis. I feel like I've tried everything and I don't know that there's anywhere to go from here. Sorry this is such a long post. But I'm venting, OK? ![]() Seen three docs, two physical therapists, four running stores (some multiple times, and now I *only* speak with the owner at one of the shops), had custom orthotics, everything. *sigh* First doc said it'll go away in time. Second doc gave me custom orthotics and I found out that my left leg is 9 mm shorter than the right. My left foot is also 3/4 of a size smaller than the right. But the leg length discrepancy really isn't that much. But the orthotics made the legs even. But the heel pain never went away. Tried both with motion control and stability shoes. Third doc said the orthotics are all wrong and that I should be in cushioned shoes and not motion control or stability. Switched to Mizuno Wave Riders and they are honestly the most comfortable running shoes I've ever had. I don't overpronate on the foot I tore the PF - according to the running store and two of the docs. But that leg (and foot) is shorter. I slightly overpronate on the other side but only have a small callus on the big toe (the telltale sign). I have calluses on the outside of my feet (on the ball, under the little toe). Those calluses have actually substantially less hard with the most recent switch in shoes. My shoes are only 2 months old and have very few miles on them. I was barely jogging at all, so I don't think it's from overpronation ... not sure what's it's from other than possibly doing a hard elliptical workout which I don't normally do. Or, from overstretching. I do not wear supportive shoes at work (not heels, but just not supportive shoes) and I plan to buy some Danskos or Merrells this weekend to wear at work. I'm at a desk all day, though. My personal opinion after all this, is that it boils down to I have extreme tight calves, combined with a low center of gravity because I'm pear-shaped. The tight calves probably come from doing a lot of cycling in previous years and *never* stretching. When I went to PT the first time, the PT said that a couch potato has a dorsiflexion of 10 degrees. An athlete 20 degrees. I was at -3. The 2nd round of PT I started I think at 5 degrees. The home therapy stuff, I ordered Trigger Point and also this really weird foot trainer thing that looks like a golf club. I figure it certainly can't hurt. Also ordered another night splint so I can wear them on both sides. I already have the Stick, but I have a hard time getting a good calf massage that way. I have seen a chiro for A.R.T., but the office closes at 6, and I generally feel rushed because I'm one of the last appointments of the day. I don't know that they would do it on both calves. I am looking now into finding a sports massagist, but not exactly sure where to find a good one. My training partner doesn't know of any. I've called the chiro to recommend one. This is where my calf pain is -- on BOTH legs, but much worse on the side that I tore the PF. It's in the tibialis posterior muscle: (Edited because the picture was huge) Edited by Offthegrid 2009-02-25 8:01 AM (tibialis.gif) Attachments ---------------- tibialis.gif (4KB - 22 downloads) |
