I don't know if any of you guys read Competitor magazine but check out page 66 if you do. It's all about the running club I joined.

And speaking of, my coach called me to congratulate me on my race. He was really excited with my progress in the short time I have been with the group and expressed a lot of confidence in my future. Also, I get an easy workout tonight. Yessssssssssssssssssssssss!

I'll have to see if I can find the magazine. Congrats on being the teacher's pet

Once you read the article you will see this is not true haha

Swimming things I have learned.

1. Breathing by 5s evens out my stroke.  I get into more of a rhythm.

2. Straight arm dog paddle, while effective, sucks.

3. I hate quitting on a set midway.  (Happens sometimes when the other lane is much faster and are moving on).  It's like it (the rest of the set) is sitting there taunting me.

4.  Master swim (or other swim group) is really good for getting someone who really didn't enjoy swimming (me!) to enjoy swimming.

5.  Kickboards are better used as pull buoys.  I like doing kick sets on my back, arms outstretched.

Dannnng breathing 5s seems really long ...

That's what I was thinking. I like oxygen too much to go that long without breathing!

Yeah, that's what I was like a few months back.  Honestly, at first, I was breathing every 2nd stroke cause I needed to.  Then I recognized that my stroke was weak on one side so tried to go to every 3 strokes.  Recently we were doing a breathe every 5 drill, and I noticed that my pull on the left (my weak side) was better.  So when I can, I breathe every 5.  Don't get me wrong, I can't do it every drill, every time.  But when I can I do it.

Kirk - your new bike is bitchin!  how exciting - you're not only going to be smokin fast on that, but you're going to LOOK SMOKIN!!

Salt - sweet to get the congrats/personal call from the coach.  That means so much!  He's totally proud of you! (as we all are!)  Hope you have fun on your EASY workout (which, prob, would be a killer workout for me! ha!) Plus, teh visual race results are awesome!  My latest race had that too - really neat.

I'm just finishing up my RR for the marathon.  I'll link it on here soon I'm still pretty sore, but planning a beautiful hike this weekend then transitioning to dryland CC ski training (so uh, I guess that crossfit thing is out for now! ha!)

How are you feeling sorta sick/on abx Manatees?  Hope you all heading in the right direction and getting the rest you need to heal up nicely.

Keep up the great work out there too.  I know alot of you are still in the thick of training for some big events.  You guys are awesome and the pod is proud of your hard work!

Hello POD,

I need some advice, or at least a warm and fuzzy Smile  I signed up for a full on November 18th so in my infinite wisdom I thought I'd just slide into an 18 week marathon traninig program somewhere around week 11 or 12.  So the week after my HIM, I ran 10 miles for the "long" run.  Then this past Sunday I ran 13.  I was thinking this week I'd run 16, then have back to back weekends with 20 milers.  Duh, when I finally looked at one of Higdon's plans those long runs are not back to back.

So here I am in week 13, the plan has 5 miles scheduled for tonight which I will do but 20 is scheduled for Sunday.  My goal pace for this half a$$ trained marathon is 8:30 and my HIM pace after a hilly-a$$ bike course was 8:50.  Too optimistic?  Keep in mind that was 3 hours, forty minutes after my swim start (fatigue setting in etc.) so I think it's doable.  If I average 8:30 pace I'll finish around 3:42 and change.  In my first marathon April 2011, I went out at 8:15-8:18 pace and hit the wall at mile 19 ish, finished in 3:47.

Remaining Higdon plan below, whaddya think, just follow remaining plan see where that lands me?

Also, for the 20 milers, run at 9:00 to 9:15 pace, trying to avoid any kind of injury etc.  My logs are up to date etc.

Suggestions welcome!

Edit:  I did not do the week 11 workout, that's just for reference.  I did do the week 12 long run.

I don't think I can advise but I'll give you a warm and fuzzy Smile

Warm fuzzy from me too.

Also, regarding back to back 20's.  Personally, I'd be too broken to do that.  maybe on week 1 and then on week 3, but not back to back...  BUT you know you're body and if it's not going to break you down too much then...  I can't say go for it (ie, i don't recommend it), but I'll cheer for you if you decide to.  Let us know how training is shaping up and what you decide to do.

Yessss, I have been lookin' forward to your RR.

So, for CC what kind of boots do you recommend for a more "touring" style of skiing. Would the boots I have for skate skis work?

I really have no idea what I am doing when it comes to CC. I know that if I am on a flat train it's a lot like running and I can fly but other than that all my snow experience is limited to snowboarding.

I love this!  Things I learnt from squad

1. While it's more natural to me to breathe to my left, it screws up my kick so I now breathe to my right....

2. Fins don't make me faster in fact they slow me down....

3. If I try to not kick in freestyle I go faster...

4. I am the fastest in the lane at kickboard drills.

5. - I can swim 25m underwater and I can swim 25m Butterfly - who knew!!!

I fancy a nice cruisy run watching piglets - Friday I think, after work head to the beach and go for a nice run - don't measure time or distance, just go until it gets dark.  That's the plan.

Tonight riding with macca - mmm super piglet.

Hi pod!

Sorry I have been a bit AWOL but between Tennessee, my birthday last week and DC for my brother's wedding it has been a bit of a mess.  Got back from DC late Monday and just kind of vegged yesterday and got some work on my bike class power points done, those can suck hours out of your day without you noticing!  Today though I went and got my self my new bike, I was able to get them to knock over $500 off of the asking price as well:

Felt B16

Now I need all the gear Laughing

Happy Birthday for last week!

I got all the gear, no idea.

Case and point!

So it is most certainly a thing. I saw someone used it as a prereq for online dating. As in you must run x,y,z times. LOL!

I suppose it's motivation for one to get faster!

Got a 5km in tonight.  We had fog yesterday, burned off my midday.  The fog hung around all day today, and it stayed cool.  Long sleeves for the first time in awhile!!  We have had such amazing weather I can't complain!

Hello All, I hope the middle of the week finds you all doing well.

Between Reece's question, Kirk's new bike (BTW, that is a sweet ride!) and Tracy's last minute marathon, I started thinking about training stuff. Things like goals, plans, etc. I had put a "plan" in place, kind of a soft plan, more like an idea. This is due to some challenges I had last year with light training and a race that ended with me tweaking my knee. I then made the knee worse when I tried to change my running form. I ended the winter with an HM that I was somewhat prepared for, but not at my best. Keep in mind that I'm no running stud like Reece or Adrienne, so my goal for the fall and winter is to improve my running. I have a time goal in mind for my HM in March, but I'm waiting to see how things progress before I put it out there. The more important part for me though is the progression. My plan is to run more often, and build volume on the long run once a week as well. There are a couple of other pieces as well, but my focus is to simply follow Scout7's advice and run. "Usually easy, sometimes hard."

So, how about the rest of you? There are a few of us that still have tri races left this month and I know Jo and Yanti are building for their IM's in March, Tracy mentioned XCountry skiing, and Salty intends to run until the cows come home. What else is out there for anyone? Is there a focus on a certain discipline, some time off, continued tri training or maybe a completely unrelated hobby? And does the next few months present a different set of challenges or obstacles? Family obligations, traveling, holidays, eating, etc?

Have a great day everyone.

Unfortunately, I have learned that I don't relish swimming

I like your list a whole lot more and hope to one day get to the same place as you. It really does look like a masters group is the way to go on this.

cdban66 - 2012-10-11 6:16 AM Hello All, I hope the middle of the week finds you all doing well. "Usually easy, sometimes hard." So, how about the rest of you? There are a few of us that still have tri races left this month and I know Jo and Yanti are building for their IM's in March, Tracy mentioned XCountry skiing, and Salty intends to run until the cows come home. What else is out there for anyone? Is there a focus on a certain discipline, some time off, continued tri training or maybe a completely unrelated hobby? And does the next few months present a different set of challenges or obstacles? Family obligations, traveling, holidays, eating, etc? Have a great day everyone.

Sounds like you have a great/smart plan to improve your run. Good luck.  I'm still focused on the tri season with my HIM at the end of the month.  Then there is a sprint tri on thanksgiving day that one of my brothers wants to do.  There is also a 5k the same day that another brother would rather we do because he hates swimming in Florida lakes (which is what we'd have to do for the tri).  I hate Florida lakes too, but still swim in them from time to time.  So, we'll be making a decision about which race to do t-giving.  After that there is a HM in Orlando that I've done a few times and will probably do this year too.  After that, I have no idea what i'll focus on, although, I'm pretty positive it won't be the bike   The question for me will be do I just maintain my run and swim fitness or do I ramp up the run and train for a January or Feb. marathon.

As far as other challenges like eating - I just ate a chocolate croissant. nuff said.

reecealan - 2012-10-09 11:08 PMThanks for chiming in Salty.  I think I'll just cruise these last few long runs and just enjoy watching the squirrels etc. and try not to chase any piglets ahead of me Tongue out.
Well, I can offer you no help there piglets are a known weakness of the Manatees

Yum piglets.....

I fancy a nice cruisy run watching piglets - Friday I think, after work head to the beach and go for a nice run - don't measure time or distance, just go until it gets dark.  That's the plan.

Tonight riding with macca - mmm super piglet.

There was a thread about literally being attracted to fast people. Apparently it's a thing. Who knew!

I'm attracted to attractive people...haha!

omg - I'm totally attracted to fast people! Seriously! I just met a fast runner (like FAST!) and he's HOT, but if i saw him walking down the street, I don't know if i'd be as attracted...  does that make me shallow?!?! (I'm glad you're my Manatees and wont judge me!)

Case and point!

So it is most certainly a thing. I saw someone used it as a prereq for online dating. As in you must run x,y,z times. LOL!

I suppose it's motivation for one to get faster!

*I'm attracted to Kirk's bike, WHAT DOES IT MEAN!!?!?! Surprised

I like Kirk's bike too!  I so want a TT bike but it's not in the budget Cry   I'm attracted to any gal that's out there busting her a$$ to accomplish her goals regardless of speed, that's hot!
