sirgab - 2013-02-16 8:30 AMSamy, good luck on your race on Sunday, let us know how it goes!  Anyone else racing this weekend?
No racing here...however, if I make my run tomorrow morning I will have my first 40 mile week...pretty pumped how much my endurance has improved! I know I'm the one doing the work but this group is where I get my motivation from - thanks Team!

Mitch, I am glad to see the new training philosophy is working well for you. You have been putting up impressive numbers month after month. You might become the new poster boy for MAF.

Not sure it's strict MAF, but definitely lots of aerobic training with speed/intensity sprinkled in. I'm staying healthy and also learning to listen to my body a lot better. Have you decided if you're coming down for the Martian?

Jackie - Did you buy "The Hanson's Marathon Mehod"? I'm wondering if it has training plans in it? Trying to figure out if I need to download a plan for their website or if I can't just buy the book? Thinking of the 40 to 60 mile a week plan. Chris - I know you have experience here as well. Love any thoughts you both have. As an aside, my HM plan will peak out at 52 miles per week. -Mitch

Weather for the race sunday was supposed to be high 50's. I checked today, and forecast is low 40's! Thankfully no rain, but not sure what to wear. I have not run in low 40s since last year.

I am wearing my shorts, calf sleeves, and hat, but undecided about shirt. I tried to run with gloves last year in mid 40s and did not work, so that's an easy decision. I have a long sleeve light shirt, or a long sleeve heavier shirt. I am NOt cold prone, and would hate to feel over dressed by the mid-way point. Any suggestions recommendations?

I have heard people buy long socks from the dollar store to cover the arms.

Also you can get a garbage bag cut a hole in it and dispose before the race.

I have used the long socks on the arms before. That works great.

1100 yard swim with the faster people. Form went to crap after about 20 minutes, but still happy with it. Then 45 minutes on the trainer. Good day.

Need some help on this one.

Told my wife not to get me anything expensive for Christmas or my birthday because i was going to get some race wheels this spring. Now i need to know what wheels to get. 404s, 808s, or a disk, 404 in the front, 808 in the back? what else do i need to know. what other questions should i need to ask. I'm about an 18mph hour guy over a olympic type distance. i'm shooting to be a 19 mph guy without the wheels. Price is not the deciding factor, but i want the best value.

Good luck in your race Sammy! You can also tie a light jacket around your waist when it gets too warm. I've done it few times while running in Chicago.

It's pouring with rain and riding plans have been cancelled this morning. It was supposed to be a ride to Nerang State Forest to ride along the 25k trail before I sign up to run there. I'm not happy.

Ahhh, wheels.  At first, things looks simple, but if you spend the time researching and learning about the hubs, bearings, lacing pattern, etc. you can drive yourself nuts.  First question is rim selection - do you intend to race on them only? Not every set of wheels can handle both, especially wheels that are more designed for lighter weight rides.  Remember, that there are not many pro cyclists triathletes clocking in above 175 pounds so durability can be an issue.  I have a set of full carbon Enve wheels that I train and race on.  They may not be the lightest, but they are exceedingly well and can take a pounding.  Seemed crazy to me to spend $2K on something I'd only use a handful of times a year.   Second question, clinchers or tubulars.  Tubulars are more aero but do not allow for quick changes and you won't meet many folks riding around with a spare tubular.  Next, think about how deep to go.  You can go deeper on the back and more shallow on the front or even sized on both.  If you go real deep or disc on the back, you can really run into issues with the wind.  In really windy conditions, the disc is a liability. I run 65MM on both the front and back and while then can get twitchy in heavy wind, but I am comfortable with them. In terms of hubs, they are worth researching some on the internet to understand the bearing set up and how the number of spokes and patterns impact aerodynamics.  Quite frankly, that stuff is way too geeky for me.

markhodges1973 - 2013-02-13 4:24 PM Question to all you Bronze members - I see you can log access to the free HIM 20wk detailed plan. Does this mean I can take the free plan and import it into my training log?

More importantly, has anyone used the BT HIM 20wk plan - comments/feedback?

I used this plan for my first HIM.  It will get you there if you follow it.  The program is good for a while, but like any plan you get to a point where you learn what needs to give and what needs to be pushed.  My feeling is that plan is way too swim heavy and not enough focused on the bike.  That said, going into my first HIM, I was way psyched out on the swim so I felt that I needed the extra assurance.  The reality is that you don't need 3000+ yd swim sets when training for a HIM.  It is certainly a good way to go for your first hiM.

Matthew, Joe - I appreciate your comments - I definitely want to start and finsih my HIM safely and not looking to win, so will follow the plan and adapt if necessary. Cheers, Mark.

Mark - there is a good training thread on BT involving people who are using the plan.  Definitely worthwhile to post there with questions.

Brooks and Illuminite both make a packable jacket. I have the Illuminite jacket, it has its own belt and seconds as a storage pouch. Also if you do any night running, the visibility of it is amazing. I can wear it and a short sleeve shirt under 50. Under 40 I wear long sleeves with it.

Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed

Wow, What a crazy end to the week. My youngest has decided that he no longer needs to sleep and therefore no one else in the house does either.  Couple that with a busy schedule at work and a couple of other commitments, there hasn't been a whole lot of SBR going on here.  On the plus side though I did get a great massage and my leg feels totally healed.  No more pains whatsoever during or after my runs.  Time to ramp up some mileage again.

*Mitch & Jim- I'm still not registered for the Martian, I still want to run it, just not sure I'll get to the distance by then.  I'm certainly not going to do the full.  Most likely going to run the half just for fun, not race it. I might be registering the week before.Undecided

*Samy- For my last marathon, I went and got a sweatshirt from the local resale shop for $1.  wore it at the start of the race until I started to sweat a little then took it off and handed it to one of the volunteers.  A lot of races now take this discarded clothing and donate it back to local charities.  Worked great for me and I didn't lose a nice piece of exercise gear.

42:20 on the drainer. 2 days rest, we took out oldest and 4 of her friends down to Detroit for the Maroon 5 concert to celebrate her 18th birthday. I lost 2 days in the process.

That's awesome Jim, I love Maroon 5, you are a great Dad! BTW, that should count like 3 workouts at least Wink

From his FB update, it seems like Coach E is having a blast in his bike training camp and pulled a 100 mile ride w/ like 6000+ft of climbing today - wow!

Today I had a family relay triathlon event at my girls school where I did the swim portion, a friends kid the bike and my 8 yr old the run.  We did not win, but we had a blast and it was awesome to see my daughter excited about triathlon Laughing

Today a 14 mile run at a good pace

Catching up for a swim and a 2hr drainer ride today - which is really way too long except for the fact that I am now caught up on House of Lies and Californication.

Signed up for Duathlon in the first week of April and a Half Mary with the wife in September so the calendar is starring to fill in.

Catching up for a swim and a 2hr drainer ride today - which is really way too long except for the fact that I am now caught up on House of Lies and Californication.

Signed up for Duathlon in the first week of April and a Half Mary with the wife in September so the calendar is starring to fill in.

Added back Gabe!

OK, I went for it in spite of the rain. 2hr MTB ride. Got drenched of course, but made it to the trail. Even had a go at the trail itself, but it was too muddy. Maybe next time.

Yup! Just like Gabe said I am in Fredericksburg doing a (hellaciously hilly) cycling camp. It's been good on the first day, tomorrow I get to ride about eighty more and another chunk on Monday. Today's ride hasn't been downloaded yet, I forgot my laptop back home, but I can assure you it's been HARD! Those boys that I am riding with are hardcore, state champion level roadies, some triathletes too.I'll keep you posted on how it's going! Keep having fun!

RandyP1964 - 2013-02-16 10:36 AMNeed some help on this one.
Zipp 404 firecrests have the same drag numbers than the old 808, but much lighter and very forgiving on crosswinds. You have to account for the yaw angles, the slower you go the steeper they are, therefore your benefit from deep section wheels and disks are somewhat diminished. True gains for anything deeper than 85 millimeters are seen at 25mph or more. The 404 is versatile, good for climbing, good numbers at EVERY yaw angle, easy to get up to speed due to its low rotational weight and stiffness.

A 52min OWS on a beautiful summers day. Belmore Basin was as flat as a pool. Straight after that I did a 40 min run, much of it along trails behind the beach. What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
