Suzy I am a huge fan of Chris' Winter Spin (or Ride)... A nice 21.40 mile ride w/ a minor hill in the middle... Can take me anywhere from an hour to 1:10 depending on how hard I am pushing...

I made my own 10 and 20 mile courses so I use those a lot.  Need to look when I get home on which other ones I use a lot, most of the time I randomly pick a ride and use it.

I have the course from mooseman so I should ride that but it has some 17% grade hills on it which on the CT are almost impossible to ride.

Good morning everyone. I hope everyone is having a good day so far. It is actually snowing here. Wet heavy snow at that and we're supposed to get a couple of inches of the stuff. No outside training for me today.

trevor: cereal and toast sounds like the supper of champions or the very lonely

good morning all....for those interested...Yes it was a cherrios and toast night last night.
Back from sunny Florida, feeling like I have a bit of a head cold. Live here all winter no issues all winter. Go to 90 degree weather and get a cold? silliness i say! Great trip, ran 5 times, swam alot with my kids, hit south beach for a day. Great trip.
I do have a question though..I have noticed that it is very tender about  2inches above the inside ankle right by the shin bone. It doesnt hurt or anything like that, but when I run touch the area with my hand(or my daughters stand on it) it hurts. It feels like it could be the tissue an/or the bone. Thoughts?

Sorry, after yesterdays excitement not much going on today.  Legs are a bit sore for some reason didn't think they would be from running that slow yesterday.

Waiting on my wheelcover to get here, will finally take the good pic's of my bike.

Waiting on replay from local bike club to see if I am cool enough to ride with them.

Waiting on front tire to come from probike kit.

So basically doing a lot of waiting today.

Yeah, so we've got more snow... after these past few days of 50's we get snow.

I'm sore after my run yesterday, so I guess today will be an easy day.  Maybe some elliptical or easy trainer ride.

To fill in the rest of the group that didn't follow the link - WOMEN FOLLOW PACE BOOTY TOO!! The problem is that the farther back in the pack you are the low the quality of pace booty available.  It is a great motivator to run faster!!!

Ok, since you said it, I will say that I thought about that yesterday when we were trying to catch up to the race, wow the pace booty really does suck back here, need to run faster to catch up...

The biggest problem I have is that I am always in the last wave to go so have to work hard just too catch up to the nice race booty. I must admit though  last year in Owen Sound I could have finished a little faster if I had not been following some rather nice booty   and Tracy why isn't your race booty up on the proper thread?

I put this in a post were someone was asking if they should do the super sprint at 400M or the regular sprint at 750M for a person that can't swim 75M right now, oh yeah it's open water too.

===
One thing I have learned from tri-forums in the last year or so is that there are a lot of very good swimmers that have excellent advice on stroke technique, breathnig and body position.  I listen to that.  What I don't listen to is when they say something is "easy" or "natural"  To them maybe it is but to those of us that haven't been swimming for years it takes quite a bit of time for things to become easy or natural.
===

Does this make sense to you guys at all?  It's been something that has been bugging me and I have put this quote as a response to quite a few swimming questions but always deleted it before posting it.

This doesn't happen in running or cycling.  Fast runners understand slower runners, same with cyclists, they understand and can relate to when they first started.  What I have found with swimming is that the majority of quality swimmers just don't understand slower swimmers.  Including many swim coaches, they seem very capable of instructing those that are swimming 1:30/100's to try to get to 1:20 or 1:10, but they don't seem to be able to handle 2:30/100 swimmers because they don't understand how someone could be that slow.

Seriously:I think that is a very good quote to those swimmers who are not comfortable in the water or that are slower. Over time most of us if we spend enough time in the water will become better and faster swimmers. Most of us just will never reach those fast speeds though. Water is a very tricky subject simply because of the danger and fear that emanates from the possibility of drowning.

and not so seriously: Don't forget about those fresh water lake sharks

I think that advise is right on.  The fear of water is a very strong influence that someone who doesn't have it doesn't understand.  Someone can learn to be a better swimmer, but they will never have that "natural" feel in the water.  That is okay, don't be hard on yourself.  You must understand that before you will ever be comfortable swimming/racing.  It is okay to just "survive" sections of the race.  You should post it.

I have met many runners who don't understand how someone who has been running for years cannot break a 9, 10 or 11 minute mile.   They seem to forget how slow they were when they started.  I think it is similar with swimming.

It really kills me when a person asks for real advice like the short vs long sprint and people tell them to go for it withouth really caring.   It sets that person up for a really lousy experience potentially scaring them out of triathlon all together.

If you have an opinion, I would share it.  It may make at least a few people think twice.

Ok, can you stand another CT question?  When I go to bike class, we ride a course, but the coach always gives us a work out that includes a watts goal.  What do you guys do? find a workout on BT and try to do it on the CT course? just ride?  I am trying to get the biggest bang for my buck out of each ride so how should I think about this?

I am a geek, I love these questions!

Depending on my workout and mood I switch up how I use the Computrainer.

1. You have the basic mode that doesn't use the computer, I do program 51 or 52 for an easy ride that I can read a book while doing, avg speed well over 20mph.

2.You have erg mode that doesn't use the computer, unless you want to do intervals.  You can set it up to run at xxx watts then hit the + button and increase or decrease watts as desired, tougher ride this way.  Also a way somehow you can write a text file that automatically will switch the watts for you, i.e. ride 20 mins at 250 watts, switch to 5 minutes at 350, etc.

3. I made my own 10 and 20 mile flattish courses on the CT, Flat on CT is still not like flat outside so somewhat of a workout but you can maintain pretty decent speeds, I put a few peaks and valleys so I just don't sit there and mind numbingly ride.

4. I ride one of the olympic or longer courses, last night did mooseman for over an hour and a half 27 miles, lots of steep hills some got over 15%, on my CT anything over 9-10% is standing.

So I really break it up depending on what I feel like doing.  Having the silver guy riding at xxx watts I use sometimes when I want to make sure I keep riding at a certain wattage, I don't like to lose to him.

don't have any of the real videos so can't comment on them.

Have heard really good things about ergvideo's they are real life video's that you ride in ERG mode, that is at certain watts, you can customize how hard or easy you want the workout.  People on ST swear by these videos.

I went to the chiropractor this morning and still have a weaker hip flexor muscle.  Do any of you know some things I can do to strengthen it. I do a lot of core and ab work but still seem to have trouble with the one side, especially after a long run.  He said everything else is good and strong.

Do you think a running coach would help?

My chiropractor has recommended resistant band training.  Also pay attention to your glutes.  Sometimes weak glute muscles can affect how you run.

Well, if any of you followed the NCAA Tournament you'll understand there are some very happy people at my office today.  I live in North Carolina, specifically 20 minutes from Chapel Hill.  What really stinks though is if Michigan State would have won I would have won the office pool $100!   But no.....

On the positive side, I had my bike re-fitted yesterday.  I went from a comfort fit to a very aggressive fit.  Flattened the stem, rotated the bars, raised the seat.  I feel so fast now!   Can't wait to get her out on the roads.  I used to have to work hard to get that aero before, now I am there!   No more human parachute!

Here is a free piece of advise.  During my fitting we were chit-chatting about aero helmets and they said the Giro helmet is reported as having a humming sound when riding because of the positioning of the ear covering.  They recommended the Rudy aero helmet.  They said the humming isn't something you really notice until you use a quiet helmet, then it is obvious. So if any of you are in the market for an aero helmet, keep that in mind.

I have a rudy project aero helmet, no hum, just sounds like you are in a wind tunnel the whole time.  Let me know how the fit feels after a good 30+ mile ride, that seems to be a good number to determine how the fit works with your posterior and other areas that touch the saddle...
