Looking forward to RR's too. We can learn a lot from each other... for example

While the chapstick thing was actually one thing I have down on my list of things to bring already, your experience is a good reminder not to forget it. It's not a usual thing you see on peoples packing list.

Well, it ought to be, along with sunscreen.  Did I mention my sunburn?  Before I pack away my tri bag, I think I will get Chapstick and sunscreen to put into it just so I won't forget.  I'm working on the RR right now.

Have you heard of Bay to Breakers in San Francisco?  That is also a very fun race.  It is 12K and lots of people wear costumes, heck some people wear nothing at all.  There are rolling kegs of beer.  It is a huge event.  I've done it several times, but I have kept my clothes on and haven't worn a costume, although my daughter-in-law and I always think of creative costumes along the way and then don't give it another thought until the day before the race and then it is too late.

They took an "Ironman 70.3" picture of me at Crossfit.  http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/pages/CrossFit-Monrovia...

Not my best picture but it was in the middle of a workout starting at 6am.  Who looks their best then?  I wish I had at least straightened my hair.  Oh well.

Now that we have finished the March races, let's update our planned races.

July 18            Barb's Race (half ironman distance) planned
July 25            San Francisco Half Marathon           planned
October 17      Long Beach Half Marathon              planned
November 21   Ironman Arizona                           registered

I am planning on a couple centuries (do those count as "races") and maybe an oly or two before the IM.  It wasn't my preferred timing to have the HIM and the HM only one week apart, but I didn't do the scheduling.  There just aren't that many HIMs around that one can be choosy.  I need to do both SF and LM half marathons so that I can get my jacket for having completed the California Dreamin' Race Series (http://www.caldreaminracing.com).  It's probably a cheapo jacket that I would never wear, but we find our motivation where we can.

So, what does everyone else have planned/registered coming up?

Hey everyone!  I'm still recovering from the race.  My lower back is pretty sore.  I also have a pretty ugly rubbing on my neck from my skull cap.  I'm pretty high though after the completion of the race.  I still can't believe I did it.  I am doing my taxes now (well, my hubby is calculating numbers and I am waiting for the totals) after this I will try to get my photos on line so you can see me and Leah before the race.  I will definitely sign up for this race again next year.  I'm fired up now that I know what to expect.

I have to admit during the race I considered not doing the Ironman.  I was miserable on the run.  My running/walking BT friend Dave was going to sign up afterwards and didn't do it b/c he felt so bad.  He just emailed me and regrets not signing up.

My husband and I had a long talk on the way from from the race.  He said he knows I can complete the IronMan but really wants me to be smart about my training this time.  He wants me to try to get on a regular schedule and get help in areas I need help.  It was pretty cute.  I think he is scared for me.  I am going to take my time and figure out races and how I am going to handle training.  My bro-in-law thinks we should go to that tri-coach for a consultation of what services he can provide.  That will be interesting.

I am going to do the IMAZ.  I feel so much more confident now knowing what I need to work on.  I am anxious to figure out my plan!

I can't wait until all of you tackle your HIM!  Go NUTSOs GO!!

Here's my schedule so far (bold = registered), races/events are frustratingly far away at this point. My April season opener of last year isn't being run this year (which is okay because I did not enjoy the pool swim), but a bummer because I wanted to kill my time from last year.

Reach the Beach Century (5/15)
Hagg Lake OWS 2000m (5/23)
Blue Lake Oly (6/6)
Deschutes or Chelanman Oly (july)
Mid Summer Oly (aug)
Portland Tri Oly (aug)
Black Diamond Half (sep)
Harvest Century (oct)

The rest is all tentative so far in the following ways:

1. Deschutes or Chelanman OR this is a big maybe (i have air miles so it's just a matter of timing at this point) go to Door and do the sprint and then volunteer at Debbs HIM race the next day. My friend just informed me his parents live there and have a guest house (called the "dog house" which is app where his dad has to go when he misbehaves) I can stay at... would probably drive up with him or my sister and make a weekend of it.

I wish I could be ready for Barbs Race or Door Half this year. I want to race both at some point!

This would be right after coming back from British Virgin Islands & P.R. where we'll be sailing for just about two weeks on vacation, so timing wise and training wise it might not be a good move. Snorkeling will make a come back on my training log!

2. Mid Summer Oly might change to All Womens Sprint just to compare with my results from last year.

3. Portland Tri is still on unless...

4. I haven't registered for the Half yet because i'm considering doing Ironman Lake Stevens 70.3 instead. Local vs. Ironman branded, my gut feeling is go for a month more of training and do the local. I'll make my decision about this soon and register just to have up it up there as an official target.

Kate - nice report on your blog! I'm getting nauseaus thinking about mine!

Here are my upcoming races..

April 18th - Rumpass in Bumpass Sprint (Queenie is in the International...I wasn't up for it yet)
May 2nd - Bassman International
June 13th - Eagleman 70.3 (YIKES!)
August 1st - Pittsburgh Sprint
August 22nd - Irongirl Sprint

I've got some running races sprinkled in around there and a long bike ride in between Rumpass and Bassman but I'm just using those two to get used to a wetsuit and transition.

I saw one person at the HIM that finished in over 9 hours...is that cut-off time from the start of the LAST wave or YOUR wave?

Interesting nutrition seminar Saturday at the expo. A couple of different people said you should only be consuming starchy type carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, rice after a workout..that's it. I was told I needed carbs before and after a workout, so before a workout would be a bagel or toast with peanut butter I take it? After a workout would be my veggies, chicken/protein and brown rice. This morning I had my steel cut oats then I also made a veggie-egg scramble in the microwave at work. Hopefully that will keep me full for awhile!

OK - Serious question - How does everyone deal with work - stress and training?  I had a very bad day yesterday which put me in a bad place. In fact if I got an hour of sleep last night that was it. Thus I didn't work out yesterday.  Today is a little better but I just hate my job (actually the job is ok the profession is what I hate) and the stress so much that sometimes I just want to curl up in a ball and not do anything...or I feel guilty about working out at lunch because I could be at work. My thinking is even if I am not doing anything at lunch I will not miss anything by being at the office.  This happens all the time. I may have 2-3 good weeks where I feel great but invariably I have a crappy week or become very stressed over an upcoming trial and the training goes right out the window.  Maybe it is that Catholic guilt thing...If something gets screwed up at work I think to myself..this wouldn't have happened if I would not have left early on Friday to ride...Maybe I just need to see a shrink..Oh wait..my insurance doesn't cover that..lol.

Any suggestions?

Sorry for the work Suckage.  My training came as a result of a craptastic day at work.  First time I ran in over 20 years because I was in a foul mood after a day in the ER.....now I work at an insurance company and don't have the same stress on me.....I need to train, physically and mentally depend on that outlet.  Hate missing workouts.  Probably ocd   Don't really care.  I continue to do what I need to do.  The lunch time work out is a great way to shake off the morning nastiness and prepare for what will inevitably follow in the afternoon.  Take the time --even for a short work out.

Scott,

I have almost no work stress now, but had to do a career change to accomplish this fully... only after 2-3 years of deliberation and a lot of weighing the options. Health, happiness, and commitment to self preservation of emotional/mental side prevailed. But this was easier for me as I was single at the time with no family commitments, and was directly possible because like the Cylons I had a plan!

While stressed at my stoopid long hours/overpaid/underappreciated suckage job I found a few ways to deal, I had to remind myself DAILY - HOURLY even that no matter how much you think things are going to blow up while you are out for 30-60 minutes at lunch or after work- they really arn't - probably not at all, and maybe only a little, and almost aways NOT because you were gone.  Plus with added endorphin rush from that 30 min run at lunch issues are way easier to deal with rapidly and efficiently. I found ways to exercise as portion of or as entire commute - is this possible to/from work for you in any fashion? I know winters are hard, but there are ways it can be done. Even getting out and walking/riding for 15-30 minutes right before you leave, or right when you get home will work. Delegate delegate delegate at home & work... I do this a lot at home with chores and things - like bartering - can I do this 1 hr chore tomorrow in lieu of doing a partners chore now and still get 50 minutes of riding today. Oh yah and the big one for many people - maybe not you - turn off the t.v.! And when you can't sleep, get up and hop on the drainer if you have one - it's a lot more relaxing than lying in bed stewing. An hour on that and you'll have no problems sleeping, plus for me a lot of problem solving occurs while pedaling later at night. Yoga helps too.

I think we all play the work/life/training balance game every day, it is never easy, and willpower is seldom enough. Key is to find the simplest solutions to get some minutes in that help you relax. Oh yah, and I always have a couple WHAT IF scenarios in the back of mind or written down somewhere - ya know, things like what if I had another job, lived somewhere else, followed that particular dream i've always had, etc. You never know what you might encounter in your daily life that can make one or more of those 'what ifs' come a step closer to reality.

Great pics - love the one with you and the medal and all the empty roctane packets! heh
You guys look suitably scared and happy simultaneously in the pre-race picture!

Oh yah, for all of us, when I took my bike in to the tri shop for a tune-up and refit one of the owners (and multiple ironman athlete) was giving me some advice about the importance of finding someone/thing to help out with developing a good active stretching routine, trigger point, and self-myo release (foam rollin) - he basically said that unless you can afford to get 4 massages a week you better have a good schedule in place to do one or all of these from the beginning of your training plan, and especially way before you get into peak weeks. I think he might have been exaggerating a bit (or that's wishful thinking), but i'm definitely looking into doing more active stretching and foam rolling.

Scott - I understand where you're coming from. Luckily I transferred into a new job where I have a lot less stress than what I used to working in a retail pharmacy or hospital pharmacy but there are still stressors. My current boss is a bit of a control freak and isn't much for "positive reinforcement" and in the past few weeks we've had a lot of stress with deadline for regulations we're trying to get out and then find out that we'll be starting work on writing a new one in the next month. She's on vacation this week and I've already been delegated to write a congressional correspondence and a memo for our directors....ugh. While I'm stressed and think I should bring some work home I also tell myself, "Am I really going to get any work done at home?? Will skipping a run help me at all?" and the answer is usually "NO"...I keep bringing work home thinking I might review it to brainstorm, etc. It never works. So if my schedule permits I'll do a quick 30 minute spin class or do the elliptical during a lunch break or a little bit later after eating at my desk. I feel a lot better and some of the stress is relieved also. It sucks because it interferes with my training but at the same time I'm still being active and can hopefully get more activity in on the weekend.

It takes a lot of planning and I'm not quite all the way there yet but if you plan your meals, get your clothes together and bring your workout clothes with you all the time you start running out of excuses and actually look forward to getting out of the office!

Kir - Did you really quote the Cylons?? LOL

I had a good run tonight in the rain. My running group girls all bailed, I knew they would and I was happy about it. I went with the "running husband" as everyone calls him. My triathlete friend that gives me some good advice and tips and kind of lets me know where I should be and how I'm doing..anyway, we did close to 4 miles in 54 minutes...about a 14 minute mile so I was happy. I haven't pushed myself in my runs I realized so I've got to start running more on my own before the group runs then run with my turtle friend.

This weekend it's supposed to be 80 degrees!!! After weigh in Saturday I'm hitting the trail to get in a 20-30 mile ride..I need to up my distance!

Lawyer burnout is not uncommon.  Do you think that is what you are experiencing?  I am not sure how you separate your job from your profession if your job is your profession, but have you thought about going into another area of law?   While I admit I don't know anything about mechanics' liens, it doesn't sound that interesting.  (I do workers' compensation so, believe me, I am not being disparaging.)

But what other people have said is true.  Workouts might be your salvation.  Don't try for anything too ambitious, just try to get in a little something every day, just for your mental health.  See where that takes you.  I bet your job survives with you getting a lunchtime ride a couple days a week.  We are all on racers high right now.  Pick a race about two months out and train for it.  It will do wonders for your outlook on life.
