Fred Doucette - 2011-03-24 6:08 AM OK, when you finish your 85 min workout before 5:40am you know you got a good start lol.

You've certainly got the mental toughness/discipline thing worked out.

Fred Doucette - 2011-03-24 6:08 AM OK, when you finish your 85 min workout before 5:40am you know you got a good start lol.

Do you have any tips for this?  I would love to get more done in the AM, but I have a 45 min commute and get to work at 7-7:30, so getting out of bed that much earlier is often the hardest thing.  That's my issue though (going to be earlier, motivation, etc).

What I struggle with and a reason I sometimes don't get out of bed (or get out of bed but decide not to do the workout anyway) is that it's just hard to get moving that early.  I have no food in me, I generally feel tighter, and everything feels very heavy/labored for at least the first half of the workout, like I have no energy.  I don't like that feeling.

I'm in the same boat as you joe - just can't get it going early in the am.  I've tried and haven't been too successful.  I'm doing the 6x4min intervals from Jorge's winter plan today, but they'll be in the evening, cause they just hurt too much for first thing.  Rusty - the 6x4's are a workout I dread...

x2.  I've given up on early morning workouts.  Doesn't fit my schedule anyway.  Only exception is an early start to a long weekend ride.

I often get my training done during the week between 9am-4pm, just because my work schedule often allows it - it is nice to get to the pool or out on the road during those hours simply to avoid everyone else rushing around. That said, I actually really enjoy getting it in the books early. My biggest trick to getting going early is to A) not check BT before I go out the door Laughing and B) have EVERYTHING prepped and laid out the night before. If I have to so much as search for a pair of socks or fill a water bottle, I will find myself getting going 45 minutes later than I meant too. Probably because while I am looking for a pair of socks I take "just a sec" to check BT.

Hey guys,

Looks like it's been pretty active round here! I've been keeping an eye on the thread but wow do you guys post a lot!! lol

Kathy - Thoughts with you and your Dad

Todd - That's awesome work, buddy!

I didn't really get into tri for weightloss rather to prove that I could do an Oly as my skinny and really fit brother had just done one. Sure enough the next year after learning to swim from almost scratch I was in the wave behind him. it was looking good for beating his time that year but I cramped in the run after an awesome swim (2mins+ faster than him) and a HOT cycle. Still it was good fun and we're looking at doing an IM together next year.

As to early morning workouts I've been struggling with the same recently but I think the tip of having everything more than ready to go is a good one. I go as far as making all my meals (breakfast and lunch) the night before and then laying my kit out in order that I'll put it on so I've got no excuses. Other than that the toughest thing for me is forcing myself to get an early night really. I was used to running on 4 to 6 hours sleep a night through the week but with training I find I need more like eight so things have to change.

So how's people's training for March been going?
I've been getting physio for my knee and have been cleared back cycling and easing into running which is great. Just in time for me to go on holiday to the Canary Islands surfing! My girlfriend and I will both be taking running kit as well as spending lots of time in the water surfing and swimming which will be great.

Does anyone else really struggle with easing back into training? I'm struggling to get that determined training mindset again .....

I've got a question about swimming.

Does anyone else get hamstring cramps every now and then? particularly on longer sets.

Any thoughts on causes and prevention?

I get foot cramps every once in a while but if I eat bananas before I work out I haven't really had any issues.

I used to get foot cramps a lot when swimming especially upping my distance towards the end of my swims for a year or two. As I've swam more volume I don't get them any more. I do drink water with electrolytes in it when I swim....the brand is nuuns.

Wow-lots going on here.

Todd-you have accomplished so much getting to this point.  Completing the HIM will be the icing on the cake.  Hopefully, it will just be another step in your journey.

Kathy-sorry to hear about your Dad.  You deserve a "finishers" medal if you make it to the starting line at Lake Placid.  You have really had a tough few months.

Fred-you are right-this is a good group.  I have really enjoyed it.  You do a good job of keeping folks engaged and bringing up interesting topics.  Not sure the whole eating in the shower conversation qualifies but may be the funniest thing I have read in weeks.

We are in Charlottesville, VA tonight with last school being UVA tomorrow.  Then its back to Chattanooga to drop son off at school and return home on Sunday.  Should have about 3000 miles by the time I get home Sunday.  Lots of great schools out there.  Very cold at Penn today and I'm not sure I have ever been as cold as I was yesterday at Princeton...cold, rainy, windy and waking up with snow on the ground.............not my idea of "spring break".

Take care everyone.  Looking forward to reintroducing my butt to my bike Sunday evening.  Planning to do a sprint a week from Saturday so need to find the pool when I get home.

Same here. I get foot cramps occasionally, along with calf cramps. Only in the pool though, never on OWS. Usually later in a workout and when flip turning off the wall. It is really easy to get dehydrated in the pool before you know it; Like Kathy I have found taking in fluids with electrolytes between sets is key. Also, for the past 6 months I have incorporated a lot of kicking drills into my workouts, and that has seemed to help as well. I seem to have cramping issues in warmer pools; The pool I swim in mostly (NCAA competition pool) is held at the FINA bottom end (25C - about 77-78F) While the other pool I swim in (YMCA recreational pool) is sometimes pushing 88F or more. The Y pool is where I have the most cramping issues, which leaves me to think it really is mostly an issue of hydration, in my case anyway.

Randy - welcome back! You are going to be pleasantly surprised by the weather when you get home to south Alabama. Unless of course you have allergies. Spring is in full bloom, and surface has turned yellow with pollen...

Fred Doucette - 2011-03-25 5:14 AM Off to swim. Hope everyone has a good day.

Scheduled off day today, which is a little bit of a bummer as the weather looks like it is going to be the pick day of the weekend.

Great pic Kathy - I got my first outdoor ride in 3 months last weekend (not dressed like that of course), and was gearing up for another ride this weekend.  Then we had to shovel 4 times in 8 hours.  We're covered in white again!  Trainer for me again this weekend.

At camp of the 6 days of riding only 2 was I able to wear short and short sleeve jersey. Most days I wore arm and leg warmers and a vest or jacket as it only got up into the 60s and one day 50s. But compared to home other than last day it was a lot warmer. Riding with support vehicle on new and beautiful places without worrying about fluids or food was great. Roads were mixed some much worse than here in MA.

Camp was refreshing for me and so fun to be away from real life and just doing what I love. Traveling anywhere by bike rocks.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and maybe gets some nice weather to train outside.

I've been doing two a days this week (naps that is) and not much training.

Hope that the little intensity my coach has for me this weekend, shows fatigue is lifting.

Good luck bumping it back up this weekend, Kathy. Naps are entirely underrated, especially after a big training block like you just finished up.

I am prowling around the house waiting for it to get light enough to roll - going to play a little "rain roulette" this morning - we have some good storms headed our way in a few hours.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Just heading out to a OWS clinic hosted by a local triathlon promoter and tri club at a local lake. I'm hoping that the water temps are nice, maybe somewhere in the mid-high 60's. This will be my first OWS of the season and I would like to get about 3-4 in before my HIM in a couple weeks. My swim is coming along pretty good in the pool but we'll see how it's coming along in the open water today. Before the swim is a OWS talk and then 45 min - 1 hour swim followed by a 30 min bike maintenance course and 30 min transition course. Then we do a 1 hour bike ride, have catered lunch and then swim again. It should be a lot of fun.

I had to change the tube in my back tire from last weeks blowout and patch job. That went ok but when I was pumping it up, I noticed that my front tire was shredded. I don't know how long I was riding on it but I raced out to get a new tire at 6:57 and the bike store closed at 7pm. I called and they stayed open for me. That was nice. Got that changed and everything is good.

I'll let you know how everything goes. 1 more peak week of training and then taper. I'm going to be ready for my taper week.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Hope your ows today goes well. I find it so helpful to get a few in before my first race. Glad you noticed front tire issue as it is much easier to deal with at home. Enjoy your next week of peak training!
