Try strengthening exercises for your hip flexors. It may be a matter of weakness in those muscles. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!!!!! I'll be thinking about you all! Decent ride today. 11.95mile in 59:17. Found out last night that the ride on the tri next weekend isn't so flat. 400ft climb right off the start. Shouldn't be to bad though since it's over a 4 mile stretch and I'm decent on the down hills so I should be able to average better that I do around here.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, good luck to all the racers this weekend. You will all be in my thoughts and I can't wait to hear how everyone does. Second, radiology confirmed I have not 1 but 3 stress fractures. All are Grade 1 with only 1 being Symptomatic. I go back to the Doctor in 6 weeks for another exam. Until then no impact activities beyond walking. I don't have to wear a boot or cast and as long as there is no pain I can cycle and swim. Pretty depressing. I'm trying to look at it positively though - great chance to focus on and improve my swim. Have to reevaluate my diet and look at what sources of Vitamin D and Calcium I am getting. Initial thoughts are that I'm not getting enough. Also, when I start running again it will have to be in baby steps - short distances at easy paces. Great time to start all over and maybe even give MAF a full/real chance.

I keep trying to get out there and the water is so cold I'm cramping up in my feet and hands within a few mins. Had to go back to the pool to get a real workout in. Good Luck to all the racers this weekend! |

OOoof. That's hard. Sorry to hear about this. I may worry about the bike, but swimming is certainly low impact. |

Thank you for the feedback. Have you heard of the MRTYL exercises for hips and running? Just curious if they are helpful. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Competing in my first Mile TT tomorrow. Should be interesting. The winner last year was a 14 yr. old girl who did it in 24 min. and change. I am sure she will be bored by the time I cross the finish line.
Good luck this weekend everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Chris - Agreed on the bike part - as long asthere is no pain while cycling DR is supportive of cycling. I also have a tendon issue with my posterior tibialis tendon. He thought the cycling may actually help that issue through strengthening the area. I hope to try a mild cycling session this weekend to see how I feel. @Scott - I like your comment. Maybe I'll actually become a better swimmer. Thinking of clearing my calendar of all events for the year. 3disciplines has let me move my motor cicty tri to the end of season tri at Belle Isle so I may still do that race. Not sure how much run fitness I would be able to build by then so may approach from racing swim and bike and then training run the 10k. Definitely bummed that I most likely won'y be doing the Freep Half or Full this fall. So much uncertainty on how quick I'll be able to rcover. Forcing myself to approach cautiously as I don't want to do too much too soon. |

Sure - this is very humbling - I think they came from a few things. (1) Too much increased intensity on top of volume that my body was still acclimating to; (2) Running in shoes with too high of mileage concurrent with ramp up in intensity on higher volume; (3) brief daliance with minimalist shoes; (4) not listening to early warning signs that were shin splints that came out of the blue (shin splints can be a precursor to stress fractures); and (5) racing the HM on Sunday when every signal my body was giving me was to not do it. I am admittedly stubborn by nature. I should have paid attention to my body more and eased up at first signs of pain / discomfort in legs. It may have been too late at that point to avoid a stress fracture but perhaps I would haven been able to recover sooner, etc. I'm learning a lot of valuable lessons the hard way. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch - So sorry about the bad dx. Be smart and listen to the docs (just make sure that they are or understand athletes). In 2010, my surgeon told me never to run again.
I have also have found PTs to be of great help when coming back from injury. Not only do they force you to do the little/smart things to get you back in the saddle but they generally get athletes. Also, they are paid to listen to you as you whine about your aches and pains. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto, Joe, Andy and Chris, best of luck on your races this weekend, have lots of fun and kick some butt! Mitch, sorry to hear about your diagnostic, but at least you can swim and bike plus you were able to achieve an awesome time on your last HM. So patience my friend because there will be many great races in the future waiting for you. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch - I'm really sorry to hear about your injury(ies). I hope you manage to get something valuable out of changing your training focus, and can recover fully to come back stronger. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two days in a row when I haven't done any proper training. Work has been kicking my butt this week, and yesterday I barely stayed awake long enough to drive home. Tonight I spent cleaning my bike and checking it for injuries. There are a few little nicks in the paint work, and I've demolished my pump, but otherwise it appears to be ok. The left shifter has moved back into place, so it wasn't bent, just shoved. Overall it looks like I've escaped pretty lightly. I'm now off work for the best part of 3 days, so the plan is a good long sleep tonight and then hit the training hard for those 3 days. Good luck again to everyone with races this weekend. |
