ering305 - 2009-06-30 12:09 PM I'm 23 too. Started doing tris when I was 22 last summer. One of the very best decisions I've ever made! After observing the fields at the races I've done, and now within this thread, it seems like there are many people out there who get into tris at a relatively later age. Also, the winners of the events I've raced tended to be mid-30s range (I don't want to make generalizations here- I am sure this is not true in EVERY race-- but these are just some observations I've made). Not to mention I've seen abs on 40 year old women that are of Dara Torres caliber (much respect!) That said, my questions/foods for thought are: why do you think the field tends to be this way, and why aren't more younger people getting into tris?

It's called $$$ and time.  $1000 bike, $100 running shoes, $50 swim suit, $100 - $600 race entry fee, travel costs...and that's not even the training gear.  The endurance running, biking and swimming justs takes miles under your belt to get really good (see the thread on the bike splits)

Yup.

In my 20's I had the time, but not the money.  In my 30's I had neither the time nor the money ( kids  = less money and time).  Wasn't until my mid 40's that I had both.

I'll be 48 in July.

While this is true I think it mostly has to do with desire.  I know when I was 22 or so if I wasn't chasing a ball around it wasn't considered a sport!

I am 44 -- I'll be 45 in July.

Did my first two sprint triathlons last year. Did one sprint already this year, and I am training for the NYC Olympic on July 26.

It's hard to have a mid-life crisis when you're 25.

61.  I started running at the age of 43.  Ran 2 marathons in my late 40's.  Took up tri training last summer, and did my first Sprint last Sun. 1:43,  I'm hooked!

I am 27.  I was not into sports growing up but really started to enjoy long runs after I had my daughters. I have been really active for over two years now with mostly running/spinning.  The tri world is new to me but I am quickly setting goals I can't wait to meet.  I do my first sprint in August and want to do the Ironman 70.3 next June...I take that back, I WILL DO IT.
