Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread No wine tasting reception for my wife and me...we're staying with my sister outside Monterey on Thursday and then finishing the drive up to Windsor (from LA) on Friday morning. Best time for a meetup for me looks to be after the pre-race briefing on Friday. Week of ramping back up only to very low mileage/intensity seems to have worked and my hammie seems healed up. I've been fighting some chronic arch issues all year and that seems to have aggravated a calf muscle (it's always something), but nothing major. Also: using the "down time" to try to address a recurring problem on my long rides with pain in left big toe. I've been experimenting the last two days with cleat position, but I've gone back to where I started. May actually try new pedals this week (if I don't get them tomorrow night, though, I probably won't at all). |

Mesa | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Last year there was plenty of room in T2. They separate the Barbs race, putting all of their racks at the entrance and then the Full has the large wider area. I use a bucket in transition. Last year I just left my shoes, etc. in my bucket and took the lid off and everything I needed out... Kind of like at a "Branded" race how you grab your bag. I would have used it as a seat but I used a grassy area as I was cramped up so bad from the heat last year that it took 10 minutes to put my shoes on. I did get my spot early on Friday. tcovert - 2009-07-17 12:06 PM Not sure how the space in T2 is for the Full/Barb's, only for the 70.3--but the 70.3 wasn't that packed and there were alot more athletes there than there will be for the Full. |

Extreme Veteran 573 Sherman Oaks, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread ok and after this weekend's very hot temps here in the SFV and also up in Windsor, the official weather tracking is beginning... according to accuweather.com, and yes, i know this can (and will) all change 11 days from now, but yet, someone has to obsess over it. ...i hope the screen shot works. edit: it worked but really hard to read. it says for Fri morning shower, otherwise clouds and sunshine hi 84/real feel 80. for saturday it says sunshine and some clouds. hi 86/real feel 82. let's keep our fingers crossed that this forecasting will stay true!! Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Load 100 oz of water on your bike.... and have them hire a water truck to follow us on the run. Seriously though, 95 is duable, 100 is sucky, anything over 100 for me is iffy. So I am hopping the day tops no higher than 95-100. I did a HIM that hit 105 and it was significantly hotter than 100 performance wise. Keep in mind though that the temps won't reach 95 until probably around noon. So that gives you a 5-6 hour jump on the temps... which won't get me so far, but for you speeders, get done fast 8). |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Hmm...Accuweather says 83F now...still had "Windsor, CA" displayed in the search box from my earlier attempt, so same locality that came up as 95F for 8/1 then. Weird. Much happier result though. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Okay...wondered when it'd happen...finally hit the "OMGZ...I've got to leave to do an IM this week" freakout moment last night. Had to work til 9:30, then get my wife at the airport at midnight and suddenly realized all the stuff I've got to take care of between now and leaving Thursday AM. Actually got stomach in knots from the stress of rushing to take care of stuff. Funny that it isn't about actual race prep--I feel very ready--but about all the logistics of getting to the race and not forgetting anything (like our rent, that's due while we're out of town...or any gear, of course). |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread BT meetups at Vineman Hi everyone. If anyone is interested in meeting up, it'll probably be easiest for most to get together before/after the pre-race talk, so I'll be available to gather us together for both. The pre-race meeting is at 2pm. 15 minutes before this, I'll hang out in front of the building with the auditorium for the pre-race talk. I'll also hang out just outside the auditorium for a bit after the talk as well. I'm a scrawny asian guy and poweredbyfear (a bigger bald asian guy) will be hanging with me. I'll probably be wearing my white lucky ironman lanzarote t-shirt. You can also call or SMS me on my googlevoice account - 408-940-NERD and/or post here on the thread or PM me here beforehand. I'll be up around noon, so I'll probably be at the expo and transition before the pre-race talk and maybe for a little bit afterward. Feel free to introduce yourself if you see me. If anyone is up for lunch in Windsor, I'm game. Same with an early dinner in the eve. - Donato |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Well, the calf tightened up again on me last week so my first actual testing of the calf will be during the IM. I will attempt it, but if it does not hold I am looking at a lot of walking or a DNF. Given all that I don't think I will be getting into the freek out mode. I am just in the life sucks mode and praying the leg holds at least well enough to walk on it for the run. We see what will be. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Thanks for the info, Donato. I'll be at the race meeting (and around the expo beforehand) and would love to say "Hi" to other BT-ites. I'll likely be in a Disney Tri Team shirt of some sort (with a logo with three Mickeys doing S/B/R), since we'll also be trying to hook up with Disney team folks. Probably a black LA Marathon cap. Now that I don't have my ponytail anymore, I'm otherwise about as nondescript as they come... |

I am just in the life sucks mode and praying the leg holds at least well enough to walk on it for the run. We see what will be. Nothing to do but rest it now--hope it feels better by race day. I'm in much the same place with my hamstring. Generally feels fine, but when I test it with a run, I end up with some tightness. I did a 9 mile run last week just to make sure I can do this (and have time to recover from that run if it went south on me)...felt fine through mile 7 and didn't really set me back...but I'm all about resting it now. I'll do at most two more very short runs and those will be only to make sure I've got the Yankz setup comfortably in my new shoes. Very, very, little meaningful to be gained from workouts this week besides 1) general tuneup and gear check; 2) burning calories and keeping weight in goal range. |

Ventura, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread LOVE the weather forecast so far, 80's...I can do 80's! .... 100's, man, I was not so sure about that... Also, I'm slowly but surely freaking out... this being my first full. Maybe the fact that I'm not so good at the taper is making this worse, I feel like I'm about to rip someone's face off... All perfectly normal, right? Seriously, I'm really stoked about this race. Would be nice to meet you all! |

Expert 822 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Just planning and packing and trying not to freak out. You know, just getting to the starting line of this thing is an accomplishment. I'm trying to convince myself to go down to the start on Friday morning at like 7am to check it out and get in an easy swim/bike/run for a total of about 1hr. Swim 20, Bike 30, Run 10. Anyone interested in joining me? Not sure what I'll be wearing to the pre-race talk, but I'll probably be one of the larger guys there at 6'2", 225, with a bald head and goatee. I'll look for you all before and after. I'm up for lunch before the meeting and/or may be up for dinner. For the race, I'll be wearing my BT bike jersey. The race program makes it sound like there are assigned T-area spots. Is that right? If so, that would mean that we wouldn't need to go and stake a claim on a T2 spot, we'd just have to get our spot set up before T2 closes. Weather is still looking great. Highs from 79 to 85 depending on the area. High of 79 in Windsor. This is going to make my day a lot better. Mike |

This is so very true. Even this thread has a few who unfortunately had to drop out for various circumstances. If you make it to the starting line, you've probably put in 300+ hours of training already, which is the real accomplishment. The race is just the icing on the proverbial cake. So for all of you partaking, be sure to enjoy your icing on Saturday! |

Swim 20, Bike 30, Run 10. Anyone interested in joining me? I just read where it says that Johnson's Beach isn't open (except on race day) until 10AM. So I guess my workout will be at 10. Just a reminder for anyone who hasn't previewed the course (sorry if this info is repetitive -- I'm reminding myself as well), coming right out of T1 there is a very short but sharp hill. Make sure your bike is in it's easiest gear when you park it in T1. Also what looks like a little "loop" on the bike course map for Sunset Ave (early on in the bike course) is a right turn down into a little neighborhood off of River Rd so you can make a "left" across River Rd via an underpass and don't have to make a left turn on River Rd itself. The arrows show the route correctly. It's a little confusing to have the road portion filled in like that, but I assume that they wanted to show that River Rd continues through. Good luck everyone! Be safe, follow your plan, pace yourself, and enjoy the day! Mike |
