aquinn - 2008-02-04 6:25 PM Thanks! I literally panicked when we were swimming and she said "okay, now do a 500" (how do I think I'm going to do a tri? I don't know...I guess I feel like since it's months away...I've got time) But there is no time like NOW and NOW I'm going to do me a 500 every time I get in the pool. 500 and buildng.
Sounds like the right attitude to me! Keep it up aquinn! Ok team, I have a question for you all. I posted this in the gear review forum but I think you all may be the right crowd for this question. I have decided to buy a wetsuit because my HIM swim relay is approaching quickly. In fact, I've been considering this purchase for so long that I know that I've found a nearly perfect wetsuit for me - in terms of price, fit, value, etc. Unfortunately, it is black with orange trim and I'm not a fan of orange - at all. The color orange just...I don't know...it just bugs me. So, my question is - has anyone ever tried using a sharpie or some sort of dye to change the color on parts of their tri wetsuits??? I'm just curious to know if this will work, otherwise, I guess I'll have to get used to orange - yuck!

OMG... I *heart* you. I haven't tried (and I wouldn't), but the fact that you thought of it... priceless!!! I wonder how that orange could be turned into pink...

Haha I'm glad you - umm - like my idea. I just ordered the wetsuit and depending on the brightness of the orange, I'll see what I can do. The orange is really trivial compared to the "purpose" of this lovely wetsuit (staying warm and going fast!) but I figure, why not be completely happy with my purchase? If I'm going to spend a couple hundred on something, it should look good!

How did we guess that Mila would want the wetsuit to be pink??

Ummmm.....I guess I'm a typical guy because all I noticed was that the wetsuit was black.  I guess it does have some other colors on there too....

I'm terrified to go wetsuit shopping.  I'd rather do it in the privacy of my own home, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I swam 1300 last night - and (don't laugh) I finally felt comfortable swimming 50 at a time.  Hey, ya gotta start somewhere!

First swimmy of the month in this morning, folks! Was gonna swim last night but I was exhausted. I swam like crap this morning, but at least got in some decent mileage, though not at the speed I was hoping for.

Re: wetsuits. That's my project for Saturday - going to try them on. I've worn one once before, but it was a rental. I need one for the HIM relay in April - since the water is going to be fairly cold, wetsuits are mandatory, so I may as well buy one now, so I can get some good practice in with it. Our local tri-shop is having a big sale right now, so I might be able to score a decent deal.

All right, another swim this morning, and that places me at 29% so far. Long way to go, but happy so far.

On the wetsuits, the best thing is to rent first before you plan on buying it. Many shop will apply that rental fee toward the purchase. Last year, I got lucky. I rented the wetsuit, then when I went to purchase it, they had a 20% sale for people who raced the race they were a sponsor and they also applied the rental fee. Got a heck of a good deal.

Actually, when I go swimming in the lake, I just wear Z2 full suit from Zoot. I love it, and it fits me so well. The biggest catch, is that I wear two swimming caps on the head. Feet will be numb, hands also, but the head is the biggest trick. Protect that cold water from entering the ears, and you will do just fine. Of course, it's adaptation. As Lake Mead can be 85'F in the summer, with bad weather and the cold we've had, winter can drop into the low 40's, but if you commit to swim as it gets colder, anyone can do it. Trust me. just try it.

Breath holding comes from growing up on the South Pacific Islands when I was younger. All we did is Freedive there. I'm a DiveMaster for diving, but would prefer anyday the feeling of having no bubbles. If anyone of you dive, just try it, and you will see how mush closer the marine life comes near you. when i was in Hawaii a few years ago, I was in the water for a few hours, and managed to swim with a mother dolphin who had placed here baby between her and I. We were both undulating at the same pace under water. Coolest experience in my life, and not the only time. Just wear a huge monofin, they propel nicely.

Anyway, I've noticed a large number of 0% in the table. Come on folks, lets get rolling and start the mileage in the water. I know you can all do it. Later this week, I will call you out, so start logging it in. Swimmers Rock!!!!

I would do this, except that I don't have any races before I need it in April Since it's a long distance (1.2 miles), I want to be able to get in enough practice so that I'm really used to the suit. I probably won't buy it from the tri-shop unless I like it and it's a REALLY good deal. I will prolly go the online/ebay route. But I want to know what I'm looking for first, since I am anal about trying things on and making sure they're a perfect fit first.

What you can check, is to see if you can rent the suit for the day and try it in a pool. Tri Bonzai is usually pretty good, also another shop (can't remember their name, but Steve was the owner and they are off 28).

Look for looseness in the shoulder, and no restriction at all. Lactic Acid can build up. Also, the neck line, making sure you do not chock. Bigest mistake I see out there when I provide water rescue on the swim course. People buy a wetsuit and never tried it, they swam once or twice, then tried another suit at the race thinking a wet suit is a wetsuit.

Just try it first, and make sure you invest in what will work. Many of us have done that mistake and had to give some suits away at the biggining of my Tri career.

Again, neck line, shoulder fit are the two most critical to me. Again, we all have different preferences. Good luck.

Bonzai is the one having the sale. You have to rent their suits for minimum of a week ($35). The one off 28 in Sterling, Trinergy, sadly closed There is a new one in Gainesville, though; it's a bit far, but might be worth my time if I can't find anything that I like at Bonzai. The suit I rented from Bonzai fit well - the neck was a little bit chokey, but it wasn't too bad. My only concern is that I'm not going to find a suit that ISN'T chokey, or isn't too big elsewhere, b/c I'm pretty petite.

Did you try Z2 from Zoot? If it fits chokey, then it will be in the race. Nerves got tendency to grab a whole new nature during a race.

If you are petite and slim, then 2XU fits best. If you carry a little weight, Zoot is a better fit. Good luck.

Got to go for a few hours, chat later gang.

No, I think the brand was called Nineteen - it fit just fine everywhere else. It was a little chokey at first during the race, but I think it was because I was nervous. However, I'd prefer it not to be chokey at all  2XUs are pricey   Though it'd be sweet if I could get a good deal on one.

Great job!!!  When I first started swimming I thought I was gonna die after 25m.  I still remember my swim coach looking at me and saying "go ahead and do a 400 warm up and then we'll get started".  I stared blankly at her thinking... warm up?  Uhhh... that's my whole swim, and I'll do a slow 25 at a time, sister!

As for wetsuit shopping, if there is any way you can get to All3Sports on a WEEKDAY when they are slow, it will be a good experience for you.  Good luck!

Shame on you, being in Lake Placid and saying that anything below 83 is cold (I am from near Albany and spent the first 23 years of my life in the Northeast)
