I'm very happy right now.  Not going to give anything away though, so you'll have to go check my training log if you want to know how it went

AccidentalChef - 2008-09-08 7:05 PM Doctor says it's probably tendonitis in my ITB, and I need to take 4 advil about an hour before I run, wear a knee brace, and do a very gradual warmup. Hopefully that works... going to give it a try in the morning.

Do you use The Stick and a foam roller on your ITB?  It's been really helpful for me.

Never heard of those things... any advice?  A friend of mine got his first degree in kenisiology and exercise science (or something like that) and is going to show me some things he thinks will help.  I didn't get to run this morning.  My school schedule got changed at the last minute,  so I'm her all day tuesdays and thursdays....  I'll probably be spending 13ish hours here once everything is settled.  On the plus side, it means the other 5 days of the week are totally free, which should help schedule training.  The extra day of rest can't hurt, anyway.

I use the stick for rolling on my muscles.  It's really helpful for working out knots.  Not ITB specific, but you can use it on your ITB to help work out the stiffness.  It looks like this:

stick

A foam roller looks something like this:

foam roller

You lay on your side on top of it and roll along your leg.  It hurts really bad, but it is great for helping with ITB problems.

Using both of them has pretty effectively taken care of the problems I started having this year.

I hope it isn't cheating to count warmup and cooldown in my miles.  In any case, it looks like I can actually run now, which makes me really happy.  12 minute pace was nothing exciting, and I'm really not sure if it did anything for me besides the much needed confidence boost right now.  I think I'm going to bump up my speed .1 mph per run for the rest of the month, as long as I keep finishing runs feeling this good.  Still far from the 7:59 pace I ran before my injury, but I think I've learned my lesson about building up too fast.

Jen, thanks for those pictures.  My friend mentioned the foam roller last night, so I think I'll pick one up as soon as I can.  I'll also check out the stick.

Great news Steve!  Fast, slow, whatever.  Miles are miles whether you are walking, jogging, or running them.   This is a hobby for most of us and as long as you find a way to enjoy the training then it's all good!

Good stuff Steve, keep training smart. I count warm up and cooldown all the time, as well as my walking breaks.

In other news, I am out of here, down to Washington for my race. It is on Saturday so I will do my best to post my miles by Sunday in my log, but I might not get them into the spreadsheet, hope that is cool.

Have a good rest of your week everyone.

The pain started coming back a bit, but I redid the stretches that seemed to help the most, and now I feel fine.  It looks like I'm going to be stretching every 2-3 hours for the next few weeks to keep my knee happy.  If I can keep running as I recover, I'm going to be pretty happy.

In other news, I also signed up for my school's cross country team last night.  I just joined the recreational team, not the competitive one, but the only differences are that I don't get a uniform, don't have required practices, and don't get to compete in the collegiate races.  I'm not too worried about the races this year, since the season will probably be over by the time my knee is back to normal anyway.  They run 12 practices per week,  so I'm sure I'll be able to  get some good training in.

I ran 4.13 miles again today.  I was supposed to do 6, but I was feeling a little shaky towards the end, so I decided to stop early.  Guess I'm not totally over the cold.  I'll try to run two more times this week so I can get in some more miles.

Do you guys realize how odd your mileage is? Jen, you ran 4.13 miles. Darren, I think it was you that ran 3.89 miles, and there are others that are the same way. I don't have much to say, except that it is odd to me. I have to run even numbers.

I run till I get back to the gate of our subdivision and then turn off the garmin.  If I'm running for distance, as long as it gets -past- an even number I'm happy.  Only when I'm stuck on a treadmill do I stop at a round number, usually since I put in a time or pace that ends up that way (ie 30 minutes at 6mph).   The training plan I'm looking at starting next month all goes by time, though, so imagine the numbers will be all over the place.

Take it easy! I'm going to give you some advise from an old woman (okay, maybe I'm not old at 29, but some days I feel that way). I injured my ankle pretty bad on 10/1/2002, while in the Army. Since I was in the Army and didn't want to look like a weak female, I decided to continue running. Well, I ended up doing more damage to my ankle because I continued running. I have subsequently had surgery on it 3 times and have severe post-traumatic arthritis. I will never be able to run pain-free again, if I continue to be able to run at all. I wish I could go back in time and stop running when I first injured my ankle. I wish I had just left my ankle heal.

I don't want to get all serious, but I hope you don't make the same mistake I did. Please don't rush the recovery. Just take it easy and don't push your knee to do more than it wants to do.

Two loops around my neighborhood just works out to that.  I just run and use the route that's in my route tracker in the log with my timex watch.  I don't think about it at all.  If I run with my Garmin or footpod or something, I HAVE to run to something that ends in a 0 or a 5.

I didn't think of the Garmin. That would make sense.

Wow, that sounds rough.  I've had to take a couple of breaks since I started in July because of ankles, but new shoes have seemed to help.  I was very careful about recovery there.  With the ITBS, I specifically asked the doctor if I could keep running and she said yes.  Same answer from my friend.  I just need to listen to my body with regards to the pain.  The worst point on the run today was about a 2/10 in pain, and that was over in about ten seconds.  It didn't happen til I'd been running 48 minutes already.  Trust me, if the pain gets bad during a run I'll be off the treadmill in seconds, and if stretching the ITB doesn't help I'll be done for the day.  I really miss pain free running at this point, and I want to get back to it as soon as possible.

Oh, and every time I get some pain or injury from training that wouldn't have happened even 2 years ago, I feel pretty old myself at 27.
