Junthank:  Can you explain what you mean by this "One thing that I focused on was not crossing over my mid-point with hand entry in the water"  Are you referring to hand position in relation to your body mid-point?

When your hand enters the water you don't want to be entering crossing over your center line. This causes your to wiggle, and can throw lots of things off. It's best to have your hand enter straight out from your shoulder right before your hand enters the water to initiate the catch.

Pretty easy to notice, just look way forward while swimming to see if you are crossing over your center line or not with your hands.

Thanks for the clarification.  I'll watch myself next time I'm in the pool.

Ok everyone, you've got 3 more days of slacking off if you must. However, after that I'm going to be getting on your butt if there is any slacking off going on.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Oh and hung over or not, everyone should do at least a 30minute run in the morning on the 1st.

There is no better way to kick off the new year.

smilford - 2009-12-29 10:06 AM Oh and hung over or not, everyone should do at least a 30minute run in the morning on the 1st. There is no better way to kick off the new year.

Speaking of running on the 1st, I have a question for you, a coaching kind of question.

I have yet to run a 20 miler for my marathon on the 10th.  I have done a 18 miler.  My schedule has not been good and I was going to get that big one in yesterday but had the heartburn problem and had to stop.  Am I foolish to do the 20 miler on the 1st and then start tapering from there and still have enough of time to recover and get a few more runs in before my race or is the 18 miler enough and should I just push a few longer like under 10 before then???

Any advice??

I feel like I really need to get that run in, but I don't want to run

You haven't been logging your runs for very long on BT, so without knowing how much mileage you've been running I can't say yes or no.

From what it looks like I would say a 20 miler is 50% or more of your normal weekly mileage. In that case I would say No, don't do the 20 miler. If you've been steadly running 50+ mile weeks and a lot of runs in the 14-18 mile range, just no big 20+ milers, I would say go for it. Most people over taper anyway.

Your consistent weekly mileage is more important than a long run. You don't need to do 20 milers to have a good marathon. Those runs are more for testing out nutrition and seeing how it will feel. Much more so than any fitness gains over a solid 18 mile run.

Hi all.  Here is today's question.  When I was at the YMCA last night I saw a flyer for an indoor triathlon in March.  The set up is 15 minutes swim, treadmill and spin bike with 10 minute transitions.  What do you think, Should I sign up?  The date is March 6.

Hi all - sorry I went missing for so long.  The holidays followed by a severe illness really knocked me out and caused me inner weenie to take over.  I'm going to take it easy the next couple of days while trying to get back into the swing of things so I will be ready when 2010 arrives and my mentor group starts harassing me in earnest.

I agree - if you'd like to do it then go for it!  I know that I usually end up wanting to train more after I compete so it could be a very nice incentive to keep on pusing in your training too.

Hi Team - i was really absent for a while but I am back. I don't feel that great but not so terrible either. I took a sick day from work yesterday. It was really nice to have a quiet day. I can't say i feel great or can even put a finger on what it is. Slightly scratchy throat and cloudy head.  It's probably a cold - i just haven't had one in a year ...

After 4 nights at my parents place i came home feeling shell-shocked. Over stimulated: way too much food, way too much of the go to bed late, wake up early, and way too much socializing. I love my family but i need just a smidgeon more quiet time.  I did get training in though! I made my sister take me to her gym so i could ride a stationary bike and we did go for a run on boxing day. I have to say I think this week is going to be tougher!

Thanks to Steven for telling me not to weenie out yesterday - i didn't do both workouts on the plan but I did something!

ETA: realized many of you will not be familiar with Boxing Day - a stat holiday here in Canada the day after christmas - usually lots of sale shopping. But i don't actually know the history of the day ...

Hi all.  I'm doing a Olympic distance race simulation on Jan 10th.  I just made up a course starting at my pool.  SBR distance will be Olympic.  Anybody interested in doing a virtual race on that date?

Hi,

I would love to... but there is a little problem of a Walt Disney World marathon being that date!!  I would love to do something like that on a future date!

I would probably be a stretch for me, but I'm always up for a challange.  Let me see what I can do.  Are you biking outside (that could be a bit of a problem for me...)  But it sounds like fun.  I'll commit to some sort of a tri simulation on that date but maybe not an Oly.

I'm shopping for bike trainers this weekend.  Its a birthday present from my husband!

Happy new year everyone!

Steven, I weenied out yesterday   But not today! I already got a swim in and I am hoping to be able to get out of work early to get at least one more workout in before we head off to new year festivities!!

It was an awesome swim this morning. I was the only one in the pool for a while and then only two others came while I was there. I love that!

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy!! Hope all is well and a fun and safe new years is had by everyone tonight!

I will be biking, swimming and running outside - I live in Florida so this time of year is ideal for training outdoors.  No big deal about the distance, just set up what your comfortable with.
