I am still got some base from Half Ironman Florida but still not sure. Well howdy here in this thread too If I can do it, you can do it. I'm coming off, um, "lifetime accrued" base. In other words, the pretty much 0-18 program as well. Did a sprint tri two weeks ago and a 5K OWS 4th of July, managed most (but not all) of the workouts in between. Before that, dengue, and before that, pretty much nothing. |

Since I injured my calf I am still iffy on running long distances. |

My calf was injured and I have recovered but when I run small distances like 5K I get small tweeking feeling and then I backoff and do a slow jog. |

Anyhow, don't run hard or far enough to get that tweaking feeling. Stop before it happens, for now. Sub aquajogging. Obviously I don't know shyte about training for IM, but I know a lot about running long off of injuries. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread What a great run of posts here! I am moving towards the full, but having missed the earlier cutoff I figure I might as well wait until the next one to register! I did irons in '04 and '05, but not since. At 61 I ain't gettin' any younger and the season is going great and I figure this is a good time to gear towards iron #3 -- with B2B being the choicest of choices! To this end, I have booked into the Hilton, leaning towards the benefits of being close to the finish and not having to hassle with finding a taxicab in the evening to get me to my bed. HOWEVER ---- what is the veteran's thinking on this? Is it better to be closer to the start, or closer to the finish? I suspect the places nearer the start will be considerably less money than the la-de-da Hilton, but if I make the trip down there I might as well do it somewhat "right". But is the Hilton that much more "right" than other accommodations? I look forward to keeping up with you all, and will be very envious of the more southern of you who will not feel the discomfort of loooooong rides in the growing chill from mid-October onwards, up thisaway! |

Elite 3658 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I remembered one more tidbit of advice! The run ain't flat. It's not super hilly, but going over that HUGE bridge 4 times plus the steep hills when you go down to the river or back out of it are all tough. I'm not trying to scare you. Just train on some rolling terrain. Good luck! |

On your right | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Hey B2B'ers, I hope all is well. I was just in Wilmington visiting my mom and I went on the Ghost Walk that they have in downtown Wilmington. It was really quite neat, and a lot of fun. 90 minutes, and maybe 1.5 miles with minimal stair climbing (<10 steps). The people that do the tours will do groups, and I was curious if anyone might be interested in checking it out before the race. I'm thinking that Thursday night would be the best. You can find info about it here www.wilmingtonwalkingtours.com If people are interested I think it would be a lot of fun, and I'd be happy to figure out pricing and doing all the setting up for a group. I'm also going to post this in the Half group, so no need to respond twice. |

Expert 1706 NoVA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Livestrong191---was just kidding about everyone walking the marathon of an IM...just trying to encourage you to do the full yourself!!!! You CAN do it... As Doug (browndog) pointed out---train on rolling terrain---or throw in hill repeats during your training since the bridge and one or two short (but steep) hills can ruin your day if you expect pancake flat the whole way... As for staying closer to start or finish---I stayed in the middle--I'd say the Hilton is a good choice if price is similar to other places---they run the shuttle from there to the start (well to T1 and from there everyone gets the shuttle to the swim start...) and then at the end of the race you just have to hope on the watertaxi back across to the Hilton.... I really am jealous of all of you doing this race---it's a great race but just not in my budget to travel to two races this year.....so please ask all the questions you have so that I can live through BTers racing!! |

Hey, all you folks on formal training plans, are you coming from an inactive state? Someone mentioned they just recently tried running... for the first time since when? I'm not on a training plan & wasn't last year for my first IM. I just make sure to do my long bike ride in the weekend & do the rest of my training on my commutes to/from work (13 miles). Anyway, all this is to say: You CAN do this! So, LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!! |

That would be yes. Pretty much. Thanks for the encouragement!!! I'm not exactly on a formal training plan ... I bike lots, run a fair bit, swim whenever the heck I feel like it (=never, maybe tomorrow), try to make sure that it's at a conversational pace but one that won't make me fail the time limits either, and figure that if my volume comes somewhere near what the BT Beginner 20-week plan states, that's the best I can do. Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread If it's anything like it should be that time of year, a 60-70 degree day will be a real treat to do the race in considering so far my training is in 90-105 degree and 70%+ humidity Unfortunately that might mean I also overhydrate just out of habit. |
