I see some people are asking questions about wither or not make hotel reservation now or later.  If you can make them now go for it.  I cannot get over how all the hotels jack up there prices for this event.  It’s almost to the point of ridicules no it's actually ridiculesssss!!!!!

Naw, don't worry about finding housing, if I were you, I wouldn't start looking until the first week of September (and mine will be booked by then).

My 70.3 Warm-up is Ocean Side CA.  Hopefully I'll have my nutrition under better control than my last 70.3, so when Coeur d'Alene comes around I’m spot on.  YEA HAAA.  Still a long ways a way and I can’t wait.

Okay now that I am trying to digest all the responses to my 70.3 question 3 weeks out. Thanks for that TJ, lol.

First, I live in Michigan and as far as the travel to this race it is no problem (about a 2.5 hr drive and the closest option by far without flying somewhere)

Second- Recovery has always been my strong point. A couple of years ago (when in far better shape, which is another issue) I ran a 3:0something marathon on Saturday in Iowa, drove 10 hours, slept in my car, woke up and ran a 19:xx something trail 5k in the morning with no ill effects.

Now to all those wiser than me. 3 weeks out is really close and the risk reward equation definatley favors your arguement. I have been going back and forth with "it is so close" and what TJ says if in great shape by then it will be an awesome tempo workout leading right into taper.

I have lots of time to think about this but just wanted some good feedback both ways to ponder on.

Also thinking of racing a winter marathon in mid February. What time of year are others doing marathons previous to IM?

I just went through DaysInn.com and booked the Super 8 Couer D Alene off I90. I don't think it is on the hotels list for CDA and I got two queens for $90 a night. It was about $15 less than expedia wanted for it. The nice thing is no prepayment and can cancel up to the night before with no penalty.

Which half? That may be good timing for me/my group, and we're just south of you. For runs, we are doing the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in November, the Groundhog 7 mile in Feb, Sam Costa Half Marathon in March, and the Indianapolis Mini in May.

My only Marathon is Rock Roll Denver in Oct.   Other than that It’s tri training.  I’m a swimmer turned tri-athlete so I don’t care to run more than I have to.

I agree. Coffee out of my Ironman Coeur d'Alene mug always tastes the best!

I did an olympic 3 weeks before CDA this year and it started my taper just right. I was rested and felt like I was tuned up. I didn't want CDA to be my first race of the season. (from Seattle-the season really only starts in June)

I just wanted to say hello and that I too am in for IMCDA!

A little about me.  ? I have done a couple of IMs myself, but that was 2003? ??(??I?M?C??) and 2004? ??(??I?M?C?D?A? ?a?n?d? ??I?M?C??).  Life really gave me some curve balls and I completed stopped training.  Now that life is resuming, I have the desire to get back to the IM scene.  For me, this will be pretty much just like doing an IM for my first time as I have a lot of fitness to regain (and weight to lose).  I am excited about the challenge as well as seeing this group of people here doing the same event!!? ? ???I? ?l?o?o?k? ?f?o?r?w?a?r??d? ?t?o? ?s?h?a?r?i?n?g? ?t?h?i?s? ?w?i?t?h? ?a?l?l? ?o?f? ?y?o?u?.

Wow, 8 pages of posts already!!!  I'll have to read them another time.
So I just signed up minutes ago.  All the hype about it selling out by the end of the week got me a little nervous.  I already missed Lake Placid.
This will be my first IM.  Looking forward to getting to know you all a little better over the next several months.

They can get pricey, although so do the house rentals for that week.  If you have a group of people, though, renting a house can be cheaper per person.  Also if you're totally screwed and unable to get a nearby hotel -- there's Spokane, WA (you'll land here if you're flying in).  It's a 40-ish minute drive to Coeur d'Alene, so not ideal, but it's a big city where *something* will be available.

Also thinking of racing a winter marathon in mid February. What time of year are others doing marathons previous to IM?

I've done Honolulu (December) in the past.  I'm going to try the Seattle Marathon this year - Nov. 28 - should be awesome weather.

I am thinking about the Racing for Recovery half in Monroe which I think is the first weekend in June.
Marathons I was looking at either Mardi Gras or Mercedes in Alabama in mid Feb. Post IMWI I want to drop a lot of weight and get fit again and have a descent marathon. I think I need another goal to train for besides CDA.

This is cool to see this many Btrs going to the same race.  Welcome to the IMCDA group.  I signed up at 1pm the day after the race because people had me worried it would be filled up in a matter of hours.  Apparently they were talking about another race.  Although I'm sure it will be filled soon.

Trigger officially pulled. I'm in for 2011.

I've figured all along I would enter... the hype about potentially closing this week freaked me out, as I'm heading to Hawaii in the morning for 8 days of scuba diving. Would have hated to come home and miss out on all the fun.

This will be my second go-around, the first being 2010. Loved it so much. Really, what helped me even contemplate going back was my kid's reactions: "YES MOM!!! You HAVE to do it again!! You loved it! We loved it! You are IronMom! Do it do it do it!!"

How can I say no??!!

Total noob with only one IM under my belt, but I can tell you that I am really glad I listened to the advice of several IM veterans on this site with respect to whether to run a winter marathon in prep for IMLP this year.  I really WANTED to run one to try for a PR based on my increased IM fitness, but they convinced me it would be better for my IM if I traned as if I was going to run one but never actually do it - the basic premise being that recovery from a full marathon effort compromises IM training too much in the following month or so.

With CdA being a full month earlier than IMLP, I am even less inclined to compromise the training prep time with a full mary this winter... there just isn't a lot of time in my neck of the woods once we get enough light/weather to really ramp up our volume to afford the recovery costs of a mary.

In the end, it's really just a matter of how important optimal performance at the IM is, vs how much you want to run a mary, for each individual.  But I think it is a fair statement that if your singular goal is to squeeze every last minute out of your IM, then a winter/spring mary is not the best way to do that.

As it turned out - I still got to run my sand-alone-marathon PR... in my ironman.  I plan to do that again at my next marathon - at CdA.

YMMV,
Josh

I'm sort of the opposite case, living up in Seattle.  The weather is dismal over the winter and the days get so short that it's dark before & after work.  So it's very hard for me to suck it up and maintain a training regimen unless I set a mid-point goal like a winter marathon.
