Seems like everyone had a good training weekend.  Didn't see any reports of any new injuries in the training logs I looked over.

That massage I had was brutal!  I'm still a little sore from it.  My shoulders were über tight and knotted so they were the main focus, but also go a quick rub down and some stretching in the legs.  I don't do much stretching on my own and when I do It's mainly lower body stuff, so I guess my shoulders have been winding themselves up.

I killed my Saturday brick though!  21mph on the bike than sub 6s on the run!  I wasn't expecting to see those times, but I'll take it.  When we started off I said the key to my goals was going to be able to run off the bike as if the 13.1 was the only thing I had to do that day and it is definitely shaping up to be a good run.  Now I need to switch it up and set my goals on conquering the swim.

As I promised to myself, I tried to make sure I kept the push turned on during Sundays long swim.  I clocked a faster time than last week and was feeling great in the water and wasn't drained when I finished.  Another 2k this Sunday where I'll try to push it some more.

Yesterday finished up my Build Phase and I'm now entering Peak Phase.  My short interval work switches to longer blocks at tempo pace and my weekend distances ramp up well beyond race distance.

I'm getting excited for the upcoming tune up race.  Quite a few of us will be there in La Quinta - ChrisM, Fastyellow, halfironmike, and myself.

Ladies and Gentlemen please let me introduce “BLACK MOMBA” (Speed Concept 7.0).  I took her out Friday and let me tell you I was flying.  My eyes watered up because of the speed.  Now granted I was going down a huge hill without my glasses, that’s beside the point.  I think I’m going to push my Bike pace prediction to 23 or even 25 mph with periods of supersonic.

com on man..first rule of showing off a pic of your bike is to take it on the side of the drive train Cool....sweet bike though.

How is everyone's training going?  I think Destroyer and HalfIronmike are ready to crush some dreams over there...

Jason Stelle, was at USC in 95 time frame.

I am being a good boy, rolling out the calf, icing it, and not testing it .... yet.....  It's getting a bit better everyday, pretty much no sensation when I walk, but if there is it's about a 2 on a 1-10 scale.  But I've had these before, they're insidiuous, and just because you don't feel anything doesn't mean it's gone.  Still hurts a bit like a bruise when I roll it.

I know I should get on the elliptical, but I really hate that thing.  And no place really to aquajog, at least during the week.  Have an ART appt for Thursday, which is a week out.

On the better news front, had a nice ride yesterday with 2 large climbs that I felt strong on (if not particularly fast).  And I am training on a 12-25, which should make the climbs at Cal. a bit easier on my 12-27.

Hit the training wall over the weekend and skipped my Sunday long ride and yesterday's run.  Don't know what happened, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  That hasn't happened in months.  Also skipped my bike interval session last week.  Oh well, trying to get my head back in the game and get moving again.  Ran an easy 6 miler this morning in 40 degree temps and will try to get out for 20 on the road bike at lunch.

That is a pretty sweet Trek!

Lookin' forward to heading to the Desert in 2 weeks - more for the du than the tri, but we'll see.  As long as I finish somewhere within 10 minutes of Destroyer on Sunday, I'll be happy.  A good tuneup for Oceanside, for sure!

Good job everyone.  Just a little more than a month away!

Just my personal opinion, but I think that for those of us not chasing AG slots, a weekend off in the middle of training is beneficial.  Of course, mine was forced, but that's beside the point

I think you're right Chris.  I felt exhausted and just had zero motivation to get out there.  Best to listen to the body when that happens, as long as it isn't every weekend.   On the plus side, I got the kids up to the snow Monday for some fun sledding and made some good headway on the honey-do list.

Family is important; triathlons are just something we do.  Definitely listen to your body when it's telling you to ease up for a bit, and then come back strong and ready to rock.

tribean that Black Momba is one slick bike!

I'm looking into upgrading my components before race day.  At the very least I'll need to get a new chain.

That sounds like fun, your kids will remember that, and not asking "where's daddy going again????"  I took a week off to go diving in Coz about 8 weeks before IMAZ 2008 (got a little running in).  It was good for the soul.

My swim has finally come back, so I can legitimately call the last week a "swim focused" week with a little bit of hill climbing on the bike too.

Trying to figure out what to do this weekend, as Sat. rain seems to be the new normal.  I'd like to get a 60 miler in, thinking about going up to north PCH on Sunday maybe..... Then Desert tri next weekend, I should be able to run 6 then

ART appt tomorrow, we'll see what he says about running.  He's gotten me thru all my injuries leading up to races, so he knows how to handle me

Hi guys,

I've been quite here lately.  Work and non-tri life have been hectic, but can certainly relate to the training woe's lately.  Very mental at this point.

I find that the mind starts wandering in "questionable" directions as training through the build phase gets more serious.

Questions like:
Why am I doing this?
Am I a bad dad/husband?
Are the sacrifices worth it?

The questions seem to get louder in conjunction with the severity of the cold, rain, dark, or combination of conditions that exist during a particular workout.

I know it's temporary though.  We're really down to 2 or 3 weeks more of hard training, before volume starts tapering.

Part of me wishes there was more time and another wishes 4/2 was here already.

Hey Jon!  Good to see you back on here.  Hope things are going well with you and you're recovered from your 50-miler.  Too bad we got rained out on our preview ride, but I'm sure we'll get one in sometime soon.

It's almost time to start OW swimming!  Water temp is posted at 57-58° at the Scripps Pier, but the Cove will feel colder.  Hopefully, we won't be delayed with too much more rain / runoff.

Also - for those that will be in town, I'm planning a Friday, 4/1 (no, not an April Fools) 6:30 a.m. Cove swim.  Prob just an easy 1/4 mile out, 1/4 mile back to get up early and used to the water temp the day before the race.

Thanks Mike.  Recovery wasn't bad at all.  Only wish I did more biking over the "off season".   Feels like bike fitness suffered a bit with all the running.

Yeah, definitely want to get out on some OW swims now.  Too bad it's supposed to rain this weekend too!

I hope mother nature get's all this rain out of her system by race day.

Hey folks,

How's everyones training coming along? Hello peak weeks!

Anyway, question, should I stick with my 12/25 cassette or switch to 11/28, i'm running compact. Thoughts?

I'm hoping to get three >50m hilly rides in before race day, but the weather here has not been as cooperative as I would like. I'm thinking I may need all the gears I can get.

Thanks,
kiri

I ran a 11-23 last year and it was fine.  The 11/28 should be fine..

With a hilly course, better to have an extra gear you didn't ultimately need, than ultimately need a big gear you didn't have     I am not the greatest climber, and a clyde.  I ran a 12/27 and didn't have too much problems, the first hill will likely have you out of the saddle a little bit unless you're a pretty good climber (as I recall).  The 11-28 should be plenty.  I also don't have long hilly rides in.  I've gotten long(ish).  And I've gotten hilly.  But not both.  And tomorrow is out.

Saw my ART guy yesterday.  oddly, this is the same calf and the same injury I had about 3 weeks out from Cailf. 70.3 in 2007.  Some people never learn.  Anyway, this guy got me through that, so I am assuming he'll get me through this.  Right now it's a little sore on the ecentric (?) loading, i.e. the coming down on it, not the pushing off.  He sez no running until that's 100% pain free.  That's healing very slowly.

Still planning on the Desert Tri since I paid for the race and hotel but as of now, will just be swimming and biking, not running, unless something changes drastically between now and then.

I used a 12/27 last year (full size crank), and will be using an 11/28 this year.

Might be helpful to see if you can find a 1/2 mile long hill with 300 ft. of elevation gain and see how your choosen gearing feels.
