I entered a new level of insanity this morning. Got up and found out it was already 37 F. 18mph winds. My immediate thought was...I am not running and not getting any points, especially since I slept in on Wed.The bike it is! I had to go back and get my helmet because had a hat on and didn't realize I forgot to put it on...okay...I admit,I haven't been on my bike in a long time!Woah! That was cold! I admire you,Bill..and anyone else who gets on a bike in sub 40 degree weather! It was a good thing I told myself ahead of time I would be out there for 30 minutes. When I made it to 30, I changed it to 45!(I reminded myself about that extra fat burning potential of a 45 minute workout).I LOVE a challenge!and earning points in said challenge...Nichicannot believe I was even considering the Polar BEar challenge..have a performance that day so it won't b e happenin'

wgraves7582 - 2010-11-04 1:05 PM I am reading a blog and determining what to put together for my winter bike cold weather survival kit for when it starts getting real cold!

This blog is full of good information.

In case anyone is interested

He has a good point about the survival kit -- as soon as you stop pedaling the cold sets in so should be prepared for that in case of a flat.

HI of 32 F with wind gusts up to 29 mph by me. I have a 40 minute run on the docket for me. I will be on the board.

I am in a two week recovery period from the half I just ran. Perfect timing with the balmy 50 degree temps forecast for next week.

Bought my self an ultra bright 108 lumen head lamp!!!

Another good thing to carry would be a mylar sleeping bag sort of thing.  I bought one when I was doing more cold winter runs, thinking that if I had to stop running and was sweaty I'd be screwed since I often run on paths that are not by places I can go into for warmth.  I don't carry it when I run much, although I should, but it would be a cinch to bring along on a bike ride.  The package is about the size of a disposable poncho and I ordered it from REI.

Hey Tracy - how do you like that lamp? does it 'jumble around' much?

I have to get me some new lights for my bike. I recently unloaded the extra sets that I bought (I thought I was ordering 6 lights but turns out I ordered 6 sets). Then I found that my front light is turning off when I hit a bump and the back light quit altogether. Any suggestions for a good light set that doesn't cost a ton and will last for more than a couple of months without giving up the ghost?

Low temp was this morning at about 8 was 42 and it only lasted a couple of minutes. No points again today.

The good news is that there is snow in the forcast for next week. If I time it right, the low is supposed to get down to 32 so if I time it right I might get some points finally.

I just bought it today. Not sure. I hope not. It was only $24. I can test it out on Sunday when I have another run. I will try to get out there in the dark. I need to get some more points.

I will report back. If it jostles it is going back.

I wear my running headlamp when I bike, just an option.  I strap it right around my helmet and it rests in the groove in the back.  Now, when I am really winter biking I wear a ski helmet and it wouldn't work as well with that.  Although I plan to winter bike primarily during the day.

I did get some cheaper lights for my bike, white for front and red for the back, just more as an additional "see me" function.  But the light I use to see by comes from the headlamp.

I think I slept through the sub 40 degrees.  Since it was already 45 when I could have gone, decided to do my ride in the middle of the afternoon.
