That worked perfectly, cute Manatee and all - thanks for the tip!!

As a result of secret international deliberations involving pop tarts and such, Trina is now a Manatee.

Feel free to introduce yourself with verbosity.

I'll add you to the team table and re-post it; there's also another Manatee who's trying to figure out the settings and setup of his log so we can actually see it so we'll wait for him too.

Thanks TriAya - really appreciate your flexibility and willingness to take another person into your group!

Having spent over 11 hours in airports yesterday, I'm a little short on verbosity this morning, so I'll give the basic facts. My quick wit and extensive vocabulary will eventually show itself one I'm properly rested

Name: Trina
Age: 45 (Although I feel like I'm 25 - seriously - I'm pretty immature for my age and I like it that way)
Married for 24 years and have one son, Brad who is in his mid 20s. Born and lived my entire life here in Oklahoma. Have a Master's degree and own two businesses.

I started training for  triathlon after I received a hybrid bike for Christmas two years ago. Really enjoyed riding and became addicted. Then winter came and I decided to move my workouts indoors in the form of swimming. Fell in love with it, too. Realized I was doing 2 out of the 3 sports in triathlon, so naturally I thought it'd be fun to try triathlon. Can't say that I've fallen in love with running (mostly due to injuries) but it's tolerable. Plus, it burns a LOT of calories. I started my triathlon training significantly overweight - actually in the obese category - but now I'm happy....no, ecstatic - to report that I'm now overweight! I've lost over 35lbs since July. I plan on losing another 40 lbs this year and will be at my goal weight for triathlon.

2010 races: A mini sprint, two sprints, a 5K, and a couple of charity bike rides.

2011: Capital of Texas Olympic Distance, Route 66 Sprint, and possibly Redman HIM?

Long and short term goals are listed on my profile.

Thanks again! This is going to be a great year!

I just returned from Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where I got in a LOT of open water swimming in the most beautiful water I've ever seen, the Caribbean sea. Crystal clear with all sorts of sea creatures and colorful fishes keeping me company. (Not to mention the yummy beer with lime afterwards) I'm thinking I need a winter home there now. Yes, I definitely do.

Also did a bit of mountain biking, hiking, zip-lining and rappelling there. Also went snorkeling in the cenotes - one of the most breathtaking things I've ever experienced. If you ever get a chance to do it - do it!

2.5 hours ... what is WRONG with you?! well ... have you shrunk from the old manatee logo to the new cute slimmer cartoon one yet?

btw, i forgot what bike shoes you're in. still a struggle for me. yes, you've got me beat on length/width foot size [by a hair] but when you factor in that i'm really short ...

i'm happy with how my rehab is going--managed a 40-minute spin on a POS plastic stationary last night [it's actually very difficult to pedal], and a 55-minute long walk, longest ever in a long long time, with intermittent fairly brisk run intervals. still some joint pain in the right foot/ankle and knee, but i'm doing fantastic.

You all make sure I do NOT get my hopes up and overdo it, though! that character defect is the bane of my existence!

[i did have to nap for a long time after, though. still trying to balance/recover energy levels]

I've actually heard good things about the T2 for wide feet.

I'm rockin' SIDI bullets in 44 M and they still pinch the sides and I've got to wear them pretty loose or my feet go numb.

Sorry, I've been totally absent with having tons of family in the house.  Who knew that a 4 year old and a 5 month old (my grandsons from New Mexico) could take up so much time?  I don't know how moms with young children do it.  I remember my mom saying the same thing, dang I feel old.  Back to work today for some peace and quiet.

Swimming-love the idea of a lap counter.  I think my brain fills with chlorine and I always lose count of laps.  I can't pat my head and rub my stomach so attempting to swim with music playing is a recipe for me drowning (definitely my weakest discipline).  I always seem to be concentrating on my stroke and that breathing underwater thing.

Biking-get a trainer NOT rollers.  Even on my bike team, only the most intense, advanced riders use rollers.  The risk of injury outweighs the benefits.  Get comfortable on the bike in the trainer and then find closed area to practice outdoor riding on.  Parking lots are usually good to start and then maybe fitness trials that allow bikes that are closed to vehicle traffic, then eventually park roads, where there are lots of other bikers and people are expecting bikes.  Stay off of the main roads at first.  I still try to avoid the main roads if I can.  I don't care how comfortable I get on the bike, I am not comfortable by myself on the roads.  I live in a very busy area, with lots of people in cars who are in a hurry to get no where.  I have super wide feet (almost squares) and wear a 41. My bike shoes are tri shoes (vents to let water drain and dry feet) to be worn without socks by Louis Garneau.  1 velcro strap for easy transition.  For the record:  I HAVE NO LOVE OF BIKING.  PLEASE TAKE ANYTHING I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.  I AM NOT AN EXPERT BUT I AM A SCARED RIDER THAT HAS WORKED TO OVERCOME THOSE FEARS.  I am fairly comfortable on a bike now and handle it well (I think).  It just still scares the crap out of me.

Running-If you are afraid of injury and running is your weak discipline, then check out www.jeffgalloway.com.  Running with walk breaks to start can help especially as  you get into bricks (bike-runs).  Your legs are definitely fatigued coming off the bike and feel like jello.

On the running note, I got Galloway's Marathon book for Christmas.  I think I am going to do another marathon in 2011.   A few people in my running group are talking about doing tri's.  I have offered my house up for trainer dates because riding on a trainer with a good DVD and friends is a lot nicer that riding on the drainer alone.  Who knows, maybe they will convince me to start swimming again too.

TriAya - 2010-12-22 9:46 PM there are some really great 'just get it done' or 'just finish' type of training programs here which are marvellous for the time-crunched triathlete, so to speak.

Thanks for welcoming me to the group!  I'd like to hear more about these programs.  I had been using the 16 wk sprint plan on BT that's available for free.

Just home from a LONG day at work
We broke all sales records both for my department, and for the entire branch. Has thus been hectic. I think I sweated out a lot of the day, from running up and down stairs, and carrying stuff, so I'm claiming that as an 9 hour workout (for the record, I usually walk around 8 miles a day at work, around teh shop etc (has been measured with a pedomete). However today it was more like 10-12 I think....)

Well, I was actually planning to go for a short run today but the blizzard hit us hard! I did run christmas eve, and yesterday did about an hour on the drainer....back on the drainer again today I guess! I am still hoping to get in the pool at least once this week- we'll see. Its been awhile!

On top of that my treadmill is dead- so if I want to run indoors I'd need to gym it which is about as pleasant as oral surgery(WHY do they keep that building so hot and airless?). I do need some good cold weather running gear and this week is the perfect time to make that investment I guess. I do so love having time off of work so I can devote more energy to training or planning to train...

So you will find that I am easily influenced and subcumb easily to adult peer pressure.  My friend, MSUDan on BT, posted that he wants to do the Patriot HIM as his A race in the Boston area, near where his daughter is moving.  I am considering doing this with him.  He would wait for me at the end and is a great cheerleader.  Part of me wants to get back into tri's and do the longer distances (I am built more for endurance than speed).  This would be the perfect race for me to attempt (geographic and timing, and support).

What do you think?  Can I go from couch to HIM in 6 months?

LOL, I copied the Manatee list again to get the cute Manatee image and I got half of him.  Ha, oh well, I'll take it. Tongue out

When I went to the pool today, there were only two lanes with one other person.  My choice was the lady using the entire lane practicing synchronized swimming.  Or the lane with the guy doing breast stroke.  I asked the guy and he graciously let me share a lane with him.  However, I had a couple of close calls with his breast stroke kick.  I've heard of people getting teeth knocked out with strong kicks.  LOL, I stayed as far to the edge as I could.

Hope everyone had a great holiday!!  The kids had a great Christmas.  It was fun to see their excited faces.  Of course my 10 year old got up EVERY hour the night before and asked, "is it time to open presents?"    "When will Santa get here?"  "Mom, is it time yet?"   "I can't sleep!"    Whew, i'm tired just typing this.

Tucker_lr - 2010-12-26 8:38 PM My local bike shop only carries fiziks in stock. I just got a used bike (most things I pick up are used) with a specialized BG saddle. Ironicly, I just sold the same saddle off my MTB becasue I removed it years ago for something better. I don't know too much about road and tri saddles. Profile designs has one I like, but I was wonderingif there maybe something more intermediate first. As fasr as comfort goes I am one of the most easy to please people ever.

Might check Craig's list for saddles, but then of course they might not be returnable! Most bike shops I know of give you a 30 day return policy on saddles. I remember taking several on test rides and then when I was getting my bike fit, I tried out several they had in store on the trainer, but there was a fairly good return policy on it once purchased.

I think that if you have the will and desire and of course, the time to prepare, you'll be able to do a HIM in 6  months. I would try to schedule a few sprints and an oly as warm ups, with the oly about a month or so out from the HIM. The HIM is a great distance and challenging as well. I'd also learn the course really well and know what kinds of hills and road/weather conditions you can expect, as well as the swim water temp info.

Let us know what you decide. Exciting!!
