I've done zip and it's driving me nuts but... it's either that or cough up a lung.  My plan is to just go with it - have a good weekend away and then hopefully chest/lungs will be healed enough to get back on the bike regularly.

Interesting reading about the ice baths.  I'm brutal and barely even stretch after a long run... I know I know.  My point being I'd never even consider an ice bath!  I'm assuming you'd only consider it for runs in the neighbourhood of 10+miles so it's not  like I really needed them having only done that a couple of times.

Have a great weekend everyone - train safe!

Been there twice already this winter.  I would recommend complete rest maybe 3-4 days and then do some LIGHT aerobic work once the coughing fits get under control.  Worked better for me than the "do nothing for two weeks" plan I used the first time, which spiraled into "do nothing for an entire month" plan (see December logs...I didn't forget to update them, they're just blank ).

Hope you feel better.

Bobby, quite a stir you got going yesterday with your soy thread:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=239738&posts=96&start=1

I get very frustrated with all of the conflicting opinions on food and how it gets processed.

Take something as simple as an egg.  If you go to the grocery store there are probably 20 different kinds of eggs to choose from.  Really??  Eggs are good for you and nature's most complete protein for humans...wait!  they have a lot of cholesterol and they're going to make you have a heart attack!...no, well maybe that little bit of cholesterol won't be so bad because your dietary intake may not affect your blood level as much as we once thought...Don't Eat Eggs!!  Farmers put poison into their food!...only eat happy, free-range chicken eggs...brown eggs are better for you...Our eggs have extra Omega-3s!!!

Ugh...makes your want to become an organic farmer sometimes.  Except that it's rarely economically feasible.

I read "In Defense of Food:  An Eater's Manifesto" by Michael Pollan about a year ago and we've made a big effort to focus on more healthful foods, with as little ingredients as possible.  I highly recommend the read (it's pretty short and to the point, and doesn't overdo the science).  We also try to buy as much produce as we can from a lady who runs a produce stand down the street from us (right next to the 7-Eleven, of all things).  We do a "cooking day' about once a month where we make big batches of baked ziti, soups, and stews, and go from there.  It's not always perfect (we use jarred tomato sauce that has added "stuff" in it, for example), but with us eating our lunches and many dinners from food we make it takes many of the variables out.  We drink ONLY organic milk.  I try really hard to have 6 servings of whole fruits and vegetables per day (and ketchup does not count!!...the ad on TV about Chef Boyardee ravioli having "a full serving of vegetables" is so laughable I don't know what to do).

Problem is, if we buy lettuce at Costco it's like 1/3 the cost.  Organic apples are rarely available and frankly taste like crap most of the time.  Much of the organic stuff is really processed, too.  Shopping at Whole Foods, while fun, is prohibitively expensive for most families.

Happy (and Healthful) Eating!!

We have a Whole Foods here and while everything looks beautiful - I can't justify the cost.  I once ordered Organic from this local farm - they deliver a bucket of seasonal fruits and veggies to your door - I was so excited until I saw the scrawny oranges and apples.  And it didn't taste any different.

I've made a conscious effort to try and eat clean.  Like you said - few if any processed ingredients in my cooking.  I like it and feel it forces me to use more healthy ingredients (veggies, fresh herbs etc).  But every now and then you get in a hurry and reach for the processed bagel that can sit in your breadbox for a year and never mold ?!

I find the news is frustrating too.  From what I gather - eggs are good.  If you have a predisposition to high cholesterol then you can eat them but within moderation but for one who doesn't - they are fine.  It's that "you can't get fat eating fat" if it's all within moderation.

I haven't read the soy debate thread yet.  I used to drink it a lot in smoothies and heard it was linked to breast cancer.  But my husband is from Korea and a large part of their diet consist of soy based foods and they are all so healthy which makes me wonder how much you'd have to have to cause cancer - like huge servings 3x a day?

Ahh okay - I just read the soy thread - yes true - I wasn't thinking of soy in that way but moreso the milk, tofu.  Maybe that's why it's bad for us over here - because we eat so many processed foods with soy in it.  Korea - all natural, meat, rice, seaweed and veggies and tofu.  I didn't eat anything that came out of a box there except for oranges!

Stir... what stir are you speaking of?

As for eggs, the "latest and greatest" studies say that eggs are good for you (duh!) and that even the cholesterol is a natural healthy cholesterol.   I love eating sunnyside up eggs with the yolk all runny and gooey.  Yummmmmm.

We just did our first shopping at Whole Foods Supermarket this past Sunday, and although more expensive, that's where we will do our weekly grocery shopping from now on.  Whole Foods, Trader Joes and in the Spring/Summer/Fall we have a ton of farm stands with fresh produce less than a mile from me.  Your family cook day and overall diet sounds pretty darn good.

What is everyone up to?  It has been pretty quiet on here lately.  Any specific training folks are looking to accomplish this weekend?  I am shooting for a 2 hour endurance spin class on Sunday.

Greg

Hi Greg.  2 hours is a nice spin!  I am going to shoot for a 90 minute ride on the bike this weekend (as per my plan).

Hey, has anyone made any strides (even baby steps) toward their Goals they care to share?  I lost 2.4 pounds so far!!

2.4???  As opposed to 2.3??

I'm just happy to be healthy again, and that I got 3 swims in a week for the first time since mid-November.  I'm also starting 10 lbs. lighter than this time last year.  I think I'll be ready for when my real training plan starts next month.

Tomorrow's workout is a 20-mile trainer ride followed by 3 miles on the treadmill.  I HATE THE TREADMILL, but it's going to be 20 degrees and windy here tomorrow.  Maybe an HTFU opportunity, but my cold weather running gear is a little sketchy.

20 degrees, that sounds like a tropical breeze!  Today it was -15 with wind chills at -30, looks like I will be on the treadmill for a long time.

One of the co-workers on my team (from Wisconsin), told me more-or-less to HTFU after I complained about all the snow we got last year.  She said "that's like Wednesday in June here."

Don't know how you folks do it.

I've come to like these winter runs, although I haven't got off my lazy arse in 3 days but that's another story. Broke my treadmill and I'm too cheap to get a new one so no choice but to get outside. Actually prefer this to 90+ degrees....Now biking in this is another story

GOT R DONE...well, inside at the Y today, anyway.  The high temp is 22 today so I'm not interested in working out outside, though it looks really nice right now with little wind so I'm sure if I put on the full winter regalia I'd be OK.

20 mile ride on the Expresso trainer followed by a 2 mile run.  Legs did NOT like the run.  Followed by an awesome Italian meal in Little Italy for Restaurant Week.

What's everybody got on tap for today?

So I'm running  a loop around my neighborhood this morning and one of my neighbors has this  big inflatable Ben Rothlisberger on their front lawn that seemed to be mocking me by waving it's big left paw at me as the wind hit it. Man, by the fourth time around, I wanted nothing more than to run up on the front lawn and drill that thing into the ground.Surprised That, however, woudn't very good for neighbor relations(no offense David)

You should spray-painted a big "NO MEANS NO!" sign on it.

Our family has become surrogate Jets fans for the day.  We despise the Squealers and with all the ex-Ravens on the Jets, we're rooting for them.

Hi Everyone!  Took the weekend off and traveled to the US of A!!
Just Syracuse   Cold, windy, snowy - not much different than home!

Still coughing lots and have that flu-y stomach feel but I need to get moving so... tomorrow I'll start my cycling plan and hoping to get back to doing some resistance training to firm up.   Maybe I'll get lucky and squeeze a run or two in woo hoo.   Last I checked the weight was going in the right direction - starve a fever - but weekend away may have negated any positive downward movement... we'll see tomorrow!

Looks like some of you got some AWESOME training in this weekend!  Good stuff!
Enjoy the evening!

Good week of training, looks like everyone got some good work in over the weekend. Looking to get some pool work in this week.  My legs are feeling a little heavy after the last couple of weeks of getting back into some structured training.  On a positive note I dropped a few pounds of holiday weight, I wish they came off as easy as they go on!

We should make today a national holiday: Jack LaLanne Day.  The man is such an inspiration.

"I train like I'm training for the Olympics or for a Mr. America contest, the way I've always trained my whole life. You see, life is a battlefield. Life is survival of the fittest." Then he segued into a mantra I'm sure I heard dozens of times as a very young boy: "How many healthy people do you know? How many happy people do you know? Think about it. People work at dying, they don't work at living. My workout is my obligation to life. It's my tranquilizer. It's part of the way I tell the truth--and telling the truth is what's kept me going all these years." - Jack LaLanne
