5 miles went great keep hr under was 160 really focused on keeping the run slow.

Todd - so sorry to hear of your snow shoveling injury.  Like Alex said, try to be patient and let it heal, and heal fast!

James - Great job!  Way to hit your goals in spite of the rough week.  Exercise truly helps with stress and is a nice escape from life.

David - Wow, a new distance record for you, great job!  Perhaps you deserve another glass of red wine!

Alicia - your race sounds like a very fun idea.  Is biking allowed in Fairmount Park?  That might be a nice place to ride/run. And, yeah, finish with a Rocky run up the steps!

Alex - Way to beat the lure of the couch!  Tough to do with these winter days sometimes.

Jason - it sounds like your training is going very well and according to your plan, super!

I'm very stoked.  It's amazing what one can accomplish when able to breathe properly. I used my new inhaler this morning for my asthma (and of course the other one I usually use pre-exercise)  and I was able to run (albeit slowly per most people's measure) my entire 5K today, hills and all!  I probably could have run a bit faster if I had known that I would be able to breathe so well.  I'm just so happy - it's as though a door to future possibility is wide open!  Looking forward to the next race in the series to try to beat my time!

Melanie, that is great well done on the run!

How is the TKD coming along? Is your friend practicing with you? (I think you said the 2 of you were going for the Black Belt)

Best of Luck and I am sure you will nail those Kata's and get that Black Belt!

Cheers

I hope everybody are ok.

You should have your plan for this week ready and your season in a better shape for those who were still hesitating a little.

Just coming back from a good session in the pool. Mileage is coming back little by little

Glad to hear everyone is doing well and even setting some milestones along the way.  We have been getting snow since Saturday, it's still snowing, and more on the way.  So, inside workouts for me.  Managed my longest run to date yesterday - 8 miles on the treadmill, so keeping up on my HM plan.  I've also been nailing down the dates on my events and just about have it done.

Schedule for me this week will have to be a bit flexible based on the weather.  Pool will most likely be closed tomorrow so that will wipe out my swim and not sure if I can make it to the gym.

Mon - long run, 8 miles (moved from Sunday due to weather)

Tue - rest or ST if I can get to the gym but no s/b/r

Wed - swim 700 yds, bike 35 mins

Thu - run 5K pace

Fri - bike 55 mins

Sat - swim 700 yds

Sun - run 8 miles

Probably will change a little but here's my event calendar...finally!!  Now just need to go get registered so there's no backing out!

Mar 10 - Lake Sammamish HM

Apr 01 - Seattle Rainman Triathlon, sprint

May 12 - Over the Dam HM, Grand Coulee OR May 19 - Windermere HM, Spokane

Jun 02 - Issaquah Triathlon, sprint

Jun 23 - Seattle Rock 'n Roll HM

Jul 14 - Oceanshores Triathlon, sprint OR July 15 - Tri Rocks Seattle, sprint

Jul 28 - Lake Stevens Aquafest 10K

Aug 25 - Lake Sammamish Triathlon, sprint

Sep 08 - Lake Stevens Triathlon, olympic

Nov 25 - Seattle Marathon - HM

So 5 triathlons, 4 half marathons, and 1 10K - should be good for a rookie season!

That's good to see some schedule around

2 things:

- Make sure you do not register too early for a particular event. If you know the probability is low for this event to sold out, then wait a little bit. It will allow you to "play" a little with your planning once you'll see if you're tired or not. Last year, I had to dropped from 2 races (which I have been already paid) resulting of loosing my registration fees. For example, for me, I register a year in advance for IMLP (I had to), and when Mt Tremblant opened for registration. For the other ones, I still have time and I'll pull the trigger as I get closer to the race. But I still plan my training as if I was already registered.

- Make sure you're not overloading yourself with your planning and allow yourself some time to recover after a race, and some to taper before a race. if you do not allow enough time, there is a high chance you will get burned out before the end.

Do not hesitate to ask questions if you jave some or advice to shuffle some part of your year plan

Man, I've been feeling really great this past couple of days.  Monday was at the pool and old swim coach was there to give me some tips that knocked 20 seconds off my 500 time!  Today went on a ride and my 11 mph went almost up to 15, which was mostly flat plus a big hill, followed by a good almost 10 mph run!!  What's the reason for all of this?  I'm thinking my diet.  I started to go vegan.  I read that a plant based diet is the way to go for endurance athletes.  I am seeing a nutritionist about it Friday.   Anyone have any FEEDback??

That is fantastic and well done on the times!

I am such a meat eater but with improvement like that maybe I should love the veg more!

It would be so tough to give up the meat!

Recipies  anyone?

Got cleared by the doc today.  It was really just a bad bruise, so i'm gonna hit the bike nice and easy tomorrow.  Gonna start over on the OLY plan next week, so just gonna go real easy the rest of the week.

Wed - 28 minute bike

Thurs - 35 minute run

Fri - 30 minute bike/30 minute run

Sat - 25 minute swim (my first official)

Sun - 60 minute bike

Race schedule for the season starting to come together

Feb. 25th - Life Time Fitness Indoor Tri (registered)

April 22nd - Sullivan Civic Center Tri (indoor swim)

May 26th -  Soldier Field 10 miler (finish on the 50 yard line of soldier field)

June 10th - Batavia Triathlon (still debating)

August 5th - Oswego Triathlon (Sprint Distance)

August 26th - Chicago Triathlon (Olympic Distance) "A" race for the season

October 7th - Chicago Marathon

Might be a little heavy, but a few are still up for debate.  Definately doing the Chicago Tri and the Chicago Marathon, and really want to do the Oswego Tri and Soldier Field 10 mile (awesome to run on the field).  So really the only one that i'll probably end up dropping is the Sullivan.  Longer drive anyway.  All the others are pretty close.

Hi Alicia,

I don't know if a plant based diet is the way to go, but I would think that as long as you can keep the balance with the carbs/proteins, you can eat pretty much what you want. You just want to make sure you're fueling yourself accordingly to the type of effort you'll have to do.

After, meat or no meat is a matter of personal choice more than must do.

Congrats on your improvements!

Todd - glad to hear you are back in action, albeit slowly for now

Alicia - a big woo hoo on the gains you are seeing!

Keep up the good work, everyone!  Saturday is my black belt test, only 3 more days, so not doing too much tri-related workouts this week.  Tonight, TKD. I might swim Thursday, or else spin lightly on the trainer.  Friday review katas but no regular TKD workout, gotta save it for the test!  I am nervous but will work hard to soothe and calm my mind as much as possible come test day.  Mental toughness is just as important as physical toughness.

Here's a question for anyone, I do not have a wetsuit at the moment and wondered if any of you have any do's, dont's or recommendations? For reference I am 6'3.5" and currently 233lbs and still losing, hope to be close to 210lbs by April 2012!!! I was 262lbs October 1st 2011.

Pool closed today - I use the high school pool and schools have been closed all week due to snow/ice.  It doesn't take much to shut down the PNW and we've had over a foot this week...so just the bike part of my double - 40 mins on the trainer.  I did sign up for another HM in May - decided on the Over the Dam Half in Grand Coulee out in central/eastern Washington.  It gives me a solid 3 weeks before a sprint triathlon on June 2.  Looks like a pretty cool event - get to run across the bridge on the Dam so scenery looks spectacular.  Rented a condo/villa so will make a weekend of it with the family.

Cheers!

James

David - good question.  Glad you asked as I'm in the same situation.  So ditto for me, though I'm 5' 9" and around 170-175 right now.  Goal weight is 165.

Who's got the word on wetsuits?

Hi everybody, good to see some good trainign sessions here

Back from a crazy training day today...

Anyway, wetsuits!

Only 1 word: TRY ! try ! try !

You will find some sizing chart over the web, but the best is to try it in real life. Some brand are more comfortable than others depending on YOUR morphology. So really, the only way to find yours is to go to a shop a try it. The first time, you're not gonna love it but you must feel like a sausage in it. Not too compress though

Sometime, local shops rent them so you can try them in a pool or pond if you're lucky enough to live south Local shops who do renting usually sold them after the season so you can find some pretty good deal on the aftermarket.

But once again, the best way is to try it.

Enjoy you're evening all!

Training for today went well and i'm feeling pretty good.

30 min bike and my back feels fine.  Ordered my trainer last night so i'm very excited about receiving that.  Cant wait for some good trainer rides now that there is snow and ice all over the ground.

That is all for today.  Looking forward to hitting it tomorrow on the run.  Sucks that i gotta hit the dreadmill though.  need to get some yaktracks or something so i can run outside.

Good night and happy training all

Today i felt great when i started and was frozen when i finished. that wind sucked. today's goal was to warm up and then pick up the pace and then a cool down. i attempted today that. but also felt extremely good so I did a little extra. but nothing major that will hinder or hurt tomorrows work out. legs felt heavy this morning but with improving my eating over the last few weeks i'm recovering alot quicker than before. can't wait for swim and sprints tomorrow.

so question the wetsuits. I know there are cut off temps when it's legal and when it's not. my main races this year are sprints. do I really need 1 if i'm only in the water between 10-20minutes.

Hi Todd, glad you'll receive your trainer soon. Be prepared with something when you'll be riding inside (music and/or videos), it can gets pretty boring after a while...

Jason, it is really your call. I know I always wore a wetsuit on my 1st year of tri, even for super sprint (400m swim). I was not confident enough in open water to try without it.

This year will be different and I'm no longer afraid so I will do depending of the water temperature.

The extra floating help with the wet-suit is nice though

Alex, thanks for the wetsuit advice and it is echoed by a colleague at work who says you have to try them!

On the whether a wetsuit is needed, in Ireland they are compulsory for all triathlons and so I will have to invest.

Short Run today, cool and windy (probably nothing compared the weather some of you are experiencing). Felt good and still focusing on foundation over speed.

Cheers

David
